Multi-layer model simulation and data assimilation in the Serangoon Harbor of Singapore

In June of 2009, a sea trial was carried out around Singapore to study and monitor physical, biological and chemical oceanographic parameters. Temperature, salinity and velocities were collected from multiple vehicles. The extensive data set collected in the Serangoon Harbour provides an opportunity to study barotropic and baroclinic circulation in the harbour and to apply data assimilation methods in the estuarine area. In this study, a three-dimensional, primitive equation coastal ocean model (FVCOM) with a number of vertical layers is used to simulate barotropic and baroclinic flows and reconstruct the vertical velocity structures. The model results are validated with in situ ADCP observations to assess the realism of the model simulations. EnKF data assimilation method is successively implemented to assimilate all the available ADCP data, and thus correct for the model forecast deficiencies.

Design of Field Experiments for Adaptive Sampling of the Ocean with Autonomous Vehicles

Due to the highly non‐linear and dynamical nature of oceanic phenomena, the predictive capability of various ocean models depends on the availability of operational data. A practical method to improve the accuracy of the ocean forecast is to use a data assimilation methodology to combine in‐situ measured and remotely acquired data with numerical forecast models of the physical environment. Autonomous surface and underwater vehicles with various sensors are economic and efficient tools for exploring and sampling the ocean for data assimilation; however there is an energy limitation to such vehicles, and thus effective resource allocation for adaptive sampling is required to optimize the efficiency of exploration. In this paper, we use physical oceanography forecasts of the coastal zone of Singapore for the design of a set of field experiments to acquire useful data for model calibration and data assimilation. The design process of our experiments relied on the oceanography forecast including the current speed, its gradient, and vorticity in a given region of interest for which permits for field experiments could be obtained and for time intervals that correspond to strong tidal currents. Based on these maps, resources available to our experimental team, including Autonomous Surface Craft (ASC) are allocated so as to capture the oceanic features that result from jets and vortices behind bluff bodies (e.g., islands) in the tidal current. Results are summarized from this resource allocation process and field experiments conducted in January 2009.

The Study on Perioperative Nursing for the Patients with Inguinal Hernia

Objective: This paper is to explore the nursing experience of the perioperative period of inguinal hernia. Method: Make a retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 100 cases of patients who received laparoscopic inguinal hernio therapy in our hospital from June 2014 to February 2015, offer Western and Chinese nursing and appropriate medicine treatment. Results: The operations of the 100 cases of patients are successful, with no transfer open surgery. After the operation, 5 cases of patients have postoperative complications, 2 report slight pain and discomfort in the inguinal region 6 hours after the operation and 3 suffer unilateral scrotum seroma. All are cured after proper treatment. During the postoperative follow-up of 1~18 months, no recurrence cases are found out. Conclusion: Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is characterized by slight injury, fewer complications and lower recurrence rate, and careful perioperative nursing can improve the success rate and cure rate of the surgery, reduce the occurrence of complications and is worthy of promotion.

Effect of Higher Stress Harmonics and Spectral Width on Fatigue Damage of Marine Risers

Recently, experimental data from vortex induced vibrations (VIV) of long flexible cylinders have revealed the existence of (i) higher harmonic stress components, and (ii) chaotic response characteristics, in addition to the well-known first harmonic responses. To assess the effect of these phenomena on fatigue damage of long flexible structures, we generate alternative stress time series, with and then without higher harmonic components; as well as time series, which have either sharply peaked power spectral densities (PSD), or broad-banded PSDs, characteristic of chaotic response. We show that for stresses containing higher harmonics, the predicted fatigue damage to the riser can increase by a factor of 2.5 relative to the damage caused by stresses containing only the first harmonic and having equivalent total power. Likewise, for stresses with a significantly spread PSD, an indicator of chaotic response, the damage to the riser is increased by a factor of 1.8, relative to a stress with narrow-band PSD and the same total power. Thus, it is found that the increase in fatigue damage caused by chaotic response can be as significant as that caused by the stress higher harmonic components.

Quality assessment of paediatric education and research in southwest China: A cross-sectional study

Currently, there is a limited analysis of medical education research both domestically and internationally. To enhance, improve the quality of medical education, this study conducted a quantitative analysis of teaching project data from an affiliated hospital during the period 2016–2022. The results indicated that a total of 133 teaching projects were initiated during this period, with an average age of project leaders being 42.73±6.45 years. Regarding professional ranks and titles, municipal-level project leaders had a high concentration of seniors (48.15%), while at the university-level, most project leaders held the title of deputy seniors (58.82%). At the university-level, project leaders were mainly distributed between deputy senior titles (37.08%) and intermediate titles (38.20%). In terms of research content, nearly half of the studies (46.62%) focused on teaching methods and models. Further regression analysis revealed that professional ranks and titles were an independent factor influencing the project level (P<0. 05). These findings suggest the need for improvement in medical education research, including addressing the uneven distribution of research topics, enhancing the research capacity of junior and mid-career medical education teachers, and improving the dissemination of research results.

Vortex-Induced Vibration Analysis (VIVA) Based on Hydrodynamic Databases

We outline the procedures used by program VIVA, developed over the last sixteen years to estimate the cross-flow vibration of marine risers in arbitrary currents. The program theory is based on a combination of first principles, extensive hydrodynamic databases, as well as modifications introduced through comparison against experimental and field data. The program was built from the start to handle standing as well as traveling waves, or arbitrary combinations of traveling and standing waves, through the use of complex modes. Considerable effort was expended to develop a hydrodynamic methodology that is suitable for short and long risers and cables, and which provides results in agreement with recent observed mechanisms. In particular, we outline changes to take into account: • the influence of in-line as well as cross-flow oscillations; • the influence of the Reynolds number; • the effect of high force harmonics; • modeling of lock-in in a sheared flow; • modeling of staked sections. The methodology is illustrated through several examples where predictions are compared with field and experimental data.Copyright © 2011 by ASME
