CO₂-Philic Imidazolium-Based Poly(Ionic Liquid) Composite Membranes for Enhanced CO₂/N₂ Separation

Poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-based membranes for CO2 removal attract increased interest due to the tunability of their chemical structure and processability of polymers. In this work, the IL cation of 1-vinylimidazole was selected as the polymeric backbone to connect the cyano- and carboxyl-based side chains to explore their effects. The synthesized PILs were blended with polyacrylamide (PAM) to prepare composite membranes by coating the mixed solutions on polysulfone (PSF) membranes. The CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity of these prepared PIL-based membranes were tested to evaluate their CO2 separation performance. The results demonstrate that the cyano-based side chain showed better CO2 separation performance compared to a carboxyl-based side chain of PILs. The best membrane performance for CO2 permeance increased by 200% and CO2/N2 selectivity increased by 195%. Here, the prepared PIL-based membranes provide a potential prospect for improving the CO2 separation performance by adjusting the chemical structure of PILs. However, optimization related to cation, anion, and side chain groups should be conducted to break through the CO2/N2 separation performance for industrial carbon capture.

Energy Efficient Process for CO2 Capture from Flue gas with Novel Fixed-site-carrier Membranes

CO2 capture from large stationary sources is considered as one of the most promising technologies to mitigate CO2 emissions in atmosphere and reduce global warming. Amine absorption is the state-of-the-art technology for CO2 capture, while high energy consumption and potential environmental impacts due to solvent emission and degradation needs to develop second generation solvents with high CO2 loading capacity. Seeking environmentally friendly and energy efficient process with gas separation membranes could be an alternative for this application. In order to compare process feasibility of different techniques for CO2 capture, the general criteria on energy consumption and cost estimation were provided in the current work. The proposed criteria provided an effective way in techno-economic feasibility analysis for CO2 capture by easily adjusting relevant parameters. HYSYS simulation was conducted on a scenario of CO2 capture from a gross output 819 MWe power plant with novel fixed-site- carrier membranes. A relatively low efficiency penalty of 10% and a competitive CO2 capture cost of 47.3 $/tonne CO2 captured were found to be competitive to conventional amine absorption. Membrane systems have potentials for CO2 capture if such performance can be achieved on pilot scale demonstration.

Solid-Phase Synthesis of Reactive Peptide Crosslinker by Selective Deprotection

An effective and simple strategy for preparing peptide crosslinkers is described. An MMP-13 degradable peptide QPQGLAK-NH2 was prepared on the solid-phase using Fmoc chemistry. The peptide crosslinker was synthesized onbead by the coupling reaction between acrylic acid and the amine groups of glutamine and lysine residues. The synthetic procedure employed the acid-labile Fmoc-Lys (Mtt)-OH and base-labile Fmoc-AA-OH derivatives. Selective deprotection, of – Mtt and -Fmoc groups on-bead, freed the amine end-groups on glutamine and lysine residues for coupling reaction with acrylic acid while maintaining the peptide attached to the resin. Subsequent cleavage from the resin yielded a peptide crosslinker with two unsaturated acrylate end-groups with high yield and purity. This method can be generally employed for the synthesis of a wide range of peptides with one or more reactive groups for grafting in the fabrication of biomimetic scaffolds in tissue engineering applications.

Process Simulation and Cost Evaluation of Carbon Membranes for CO2 Removal from High-Pressure Natural Gas

Natural gas sweetening is required to remove the acid gas CO₂ to meet gas grid specifications. Membrane technology has a great potential in this application compared to the state-of-the-art amine absorption technology. Carbon membranes are of particular interest due to their high CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of over 100. In order to document the advantages of carbon membranes for natural gas (NG) sweetening, HYSYS simulation and cost evaluation were conducted in this work. A two-stage carbon membrane process with recycling in the second stage was found to be technically feasible to achieve >98% CH₄ with <2% CH₄ loss. The specific natural gas processing cost of 1.122 × 10-2 $/m³ sweet NG was estimated at a feed pressure of 90 bar, which was significantly dependent on the capital-related cost. Future work on improving carbon membrane performance is required to increase the competitiveness of carbon membranes for natural gas sweetening.
