Tools for Embedding and Assessing Sustainable Development Goals in Engineering Education

This paper presents three tools developed within the framework of the project EDINSOST2-SDG, aimed at embedding and assessing the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Engineering curricula. ESD is promoted through the introduction into engineering curricula of learning outcomes related to sustainability and, specifically, to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The first tool, the “Engineering Sustainability Map”, contains ESD-related learning outcomes that any engineering student should have acquired upon completion of their studies. These learning outcomes are described according to four sustainability competencies: (1) Critical contextualization of knowledge, (2) Sustainable use of resources, (3) Participation in community processes, and (4) Application of ethical principles. The second tool, the “Sustainability Presence Map” of a degree, shows the percentage of the presence in the curriculum of each sustainability competency. The calculation of the presence of each competency is based on the effective integration of the related learning outcomes into a specific curriculum. Respective data are provided by teachers responsible for the coordination of the different subjects of the degree, collected by means of a questionnaire. The third tool presented is a questionnaire aimed at measuring the level of ESD that students perceive they have acquired through each competency. The comparison of data resulting from the Sustainability Presence Map with the data from the student questionnaire is the first step that allows the effectiveness of embedding ESD in a degree to be determined, a proper learning assessment will confirm such effectiveness. The three tools presented in this work have undergone a validation process and are currently being used in a set of engineering degrees related to the EDINSOST2-SDG project. The results of the application of these tools are part of the future research work of the authors.

Abstract. A tropospheric O3 pollution episode over the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula during 2–6 August 2018 has been analyzed. The episode was characterized by a permanent wind shear throughout the entire period, making the observed ozone surface distribution especially difficult to explain. A new methodology is described to analyze upper-level atmospheric parameters, such as temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and O3 concentrations, added to the traditional use of surface parameters, using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) models as well as available surface and upper-air observations. Results indicate that the episode was characterized by a first phase of a sudden increase in O3 concentrations produced by fumigation and inter-regional transport processes within the Iberian Peninsula, followed by continental O3 transport from Europe to the Atlantic coast. An Atlantic front produced the dissipation of the episode, generating an “ozone front” accompanying the cold front passage across the region.

Daily precipitation in Northern Iberia: Understanding the recent changes after the circulation variability in the North Atlantic sector

Abstract Trends in the characteristics of daily precipitation over Northern Iberia (NIB) are analyzed after 14 daily records covering the last 40 years plus seven century‐length time series. Results reveal an evolution to drier conditions with subregional variations: in western and central subregions, the decrease in both the occurrence and the intensity of wet days results in a statistically significant decline of total precipitation. Contrary to other regions in the Iberian Peninsula, the lack of correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and the observed rainfall anomalies within NIB suggests that the dominance of a positive NAO mode from the late 1970s to 2002 cannot explain the trends. The land‐sea and mountain distribution creates sharp rainfall transitions depending on the pathways of the moisture‐laden winds. Consequently, NIB and other mountainous regions in the margins of the European continental water divide are sensitive to small changes in the NAO pressure centers and can exhibit both positive and negative rainfall anomalies for each NAO mode. A novel methodology for identifying changes in the NAO modes, consistent with the observed pressure/precipitation anomalies at both continental and regional scales, is presented. After the disaggregation of each dominant NAO wet season into two categories, the main rainfall changes in the NIB region can be explained in the context of the NAO variability during the last decades. The reported (sub)regional rainfall differences stress the need of caution when using NAO reconstructions, based in site specific rainfall anomalies, for the interpretation of the past climate precipitation variability in areas of complex terrain.

[1] An innovative technique has been developed to assess moisture sources contributing to precipitation. It represents an advance with respect to previously developed methodologies because it allows to discriminate more effectively between terrestrial versus oceanic sources, and also to detect with greater precision the relative importance of remote versus local sources together with the sequence of evaporation associated with a rainfall event. It is based upon the use of a mesoscale model to simulate a selected precipitation episode and a Lagrangian trajectory model to evaluate three-dimensional back-trajectories in order to track the vapor parcels transporting the target precipitation to their surface evaporative sources. An extreme sequence of rainfall events occurred over central Europe between August 11th and 13th is chosen to put the methodology into test. A domain centered in the region and spanning 6372 km in the W–E direction and 5940 km in the N–S direction is chosen to assess moisture sources. Results show the evolving role of various sources throughout the duration of the event, indicating that they shift from the southern to northern and eastern source regions, while a simultaneous decrease of marine sources with respect to terrestrial sources occurs from the onset of the event to its ending phase. The capability of discriminating moisture sources with precision is an important requirement to better understand the mechanisms of extreme rainfalls.

An interdisciplinary complex problem as a starting point for learning: Impact of the PBL method in second-year Environmental engineering students

<p class="Textoindependiente21">Three courses of the second year degree in Environmental Engineering (Geology and Pedology, Ecology and Economics and Business Administration) have been remodeled using the Problem-Based Learning methodology. The proposed problem is a real-life and integrative problem related to their specialization which must be solved in these three courses at the same time. The results reveal that during this experience students were considerably more active, cooperative and involved, and the success rate doubled that of similar engineering courses of the Faculty. Regarding students’ opinion, it should be emphasized that they perceive that this method is functional and encouraging. A high percentage of the students describe the experience as positive or very positive. Additionally, they stated that the Problem-Based Learning promoted the development of skills that, in their own view, are essential for their career, such as teamwork and communication.</p>

Implementación y resultados obtenidos en una propuesta interdisciplinar de aprendizaje basado en problemas en el nuevo grado en ingeniería ambiental

espanolSe presenta una propuesta de ensenanza-aprendizaje que ofrece a los estudiantes del 2.° curso del nuevo Grado en Ingenieria Ambiental la posibilidad de adquirir conocimientos y habilidades necesarias para resolver problemas de esta especialidad Se ha optado por la metodologia ABP, presentando a los alumnos un problema relacionado con su futura labor profesional. Se ha implementado en los tres ultimos cursos academicos. Los resultados obtenidos indican, por un lado, que la propuesta desarrollada es una herramienta eficaz para mejorar el rendimiento academico ya que el 100% de los alumnos han superado la asignatura, y por otro, que favorece la implicacion y motivacion del alumnado hacia el aprendizaje: mas del 93% han valorado la experiencia como satisfactoria y mas del 73% opina que esta forma les ha ayudado a aprender mas o mucho mas. Ademas, este enfoque ha contribuido al desarrollo de competencias y de especial relevancia para su profesion. EnglishThis paper presents a teaching-learning proposal prepared for 2nd year students of the new environmental engineering degree program, It was prepared to faeilitate the aequisition of the knowledge and skills required to solve the problems usual on this engineering branch. 'l‘he teaching-learning design is based on PBL method, introducing the students to a problem related elosely to their future professional activity. We have applied it in the last three academic years. Our results indicate that our proposal is an effective way to improve the academic performance: all students passed the course, Moreover, it also favors the involvement of the students and their motivation towards learning: the experience was rated as satisfactory by more than the 93% of them and more than 73% thought that it helped them to learn more or much more. In addition, this approach has eontributed to the development of com- petencies highly relevant for their professional performance.

The dataset contains hourly 2D and 3D meteorological variables from the output of the Mesoscale model RAMS in 6 nested domains, which cover Europe, N-Africa and the Eastern coast of America, for the period 30 October-17 November 2002. 1) * iee files: the data is in binary format (**iee files) and can be represented using the Grid Analysis and Visualization System (GrADS). GrADS is copyrighted under the terms of the GNU Public License and is freely distributed. 2) *.ctl files: the Grads control files (data descriptor files). They contain in ASCII format the mapping of the binary data (*iee) for each of the model grids. They can be edited with Wordpad, Kwrite ... and they have to be changed to point to the directory that contains the binary files (**iee).These files also contain a description of all variables and units
