In Situ Strain Tuning of the Dirac Surface States in Bi₂Se₃ Films

Elastic strain has the potential for a controlled manipulation of the band gap and spin-polarized Dirac states of topological materials, which can lead to pseudo-magnetic-field effects, helical flat bands and topological phase transitions. However, practical realization of these exotic phenomena is challenging and yet to be achieved. Here, we show that the Dirac surface states of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 can be reversibly tuned by an externally applied elastic strain. Performing in-situ x-ray diffraction and in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements during tensile testing of epitaxial Bi2Se3 films bonded onto a flexible substrate, we demonstrate elastic strains of up to 2.1% and quantify the resulting reversible changes in the topological surface state. Our study establishes the functional relationship between the lattice and electronic structures of Bi2Se3 and, more generally, demonstrates a new route toward momentum-resolved mapping of strain-induced band structure changes.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of the Ag₃Sn intermetallic compound

Abstract Ambiguity exists in the literature on the crystal structure of Ag 3 Sn: no agreement on neither the type of orthorhombic distortion nor the presence of ordering exists. Therefore, the exact crystal structure of Ag 3 Sn has been reinvestigated using high resolution X-ray powder dffraction. By applying Rietveld refinements, it could be shown that Ag 3 Sn is orthorhombic, with an ordered crystal structure of β-Cu 3 Ti-type (space group Pmmn ). The lattice parameters of a Sn-rich and an Ag-rich sample are a= 4.78233(1) Å, b= 5.99752(1) Å, c= 5.16393(1) Å and a= 4.78291(2) Å, b= 5.98854(2) Å, c= 5.15686(2) Å, respectively. The lattice parameters indicate κ-type orthorhombic distortion.

Coherency strain and precipitation kinetics: crystalline and amorphous nitride formation in ternary Fe–Ti/Cr/V–Si alloys

Specimens of iron-based binary Fe–Si alloy and ternary Fe–Me–Si alloys (with Me = Ti, Cr and V) were nitrided at 580 °C in a NH3/H2-gas mixture applying a nitriding potential of 0.1 atm−1/2 until nitrogen saturation in the specimens was attained. In contrast with recent observations in other Fe–Me 1–Me 2 alloys, no "mixed" (Me 1, Me 2) nitrides developed in Fe–Me–Si alloys upon nitriding: first, all Me precipitates as MeN; and thereafter, all Si precipitates as Si3N4. The MeN precipitates as crystalline, finely dispersed, nanosized platelets, obeying a Baker–Nutting orientation relationship (OR) with respect to the ferrite matrix. The Si3N4 precipitates as cubically, amorphous particles; the incoherent (part of the) MeN/α-Fe interface acts as heterogeneous nucleation site for Si3N4. The Si3N4-precipitation rate was found to be strongly dependent on the degree of coherency of the first precipitating MeN. The different, even opposite, kinetic effects observed for the various Fe–Me–Si alloys could be ascribed to the different time dependences of the coherent → incoherent transitions of the MeN particles in the different Fe–Me–Si alloys.
