Application of Fuzzy Distribution Functions to Stand Diameter Distribution of Cunninghamia lanceolata Plantations

According to the correspondence of mathematical characteristics of Fuzzy functions and distribution interval of stand diameter cumulative percentage series, this paper introduced Fuzzy distribution functions to model diameter distribution of Chinese Fir (Cunninghamia lancelata) plantation, and discussed their adaptability and reasons for discrepancy of simulation precision of Fuzzy distributions. Among Fuzzy distribution functions, except that Fuzzy-Γ1 had relatively low precision, Fuzzy functions, like Fuzzy-Γ2, Fuzzy-Γ3, Fuzzy-Γ4 and Fuzzy-C, all presented good simulation properties, and the parameters of Fuzzy-Γ3 had close correlation with stand age and density.The generalized Fuzzy-Γ5 distribution had the best simulation properties, and the highest precision, the value of its parameter c was mostly distributed nearby 3 and 4, indicating that stand diameter distribution was mainly similar to the forms of Fuzzy-Γ3 and Fuzzy-Γ4.Through analysis of relationship between parameters of Fuzzy-Γ5 distribution and stand factors, the effects of stand factors such as age and density on distribution parameters were discussed. After analyzing the mathematical quality and simulation properties of nine kinds of distribution functions such as Fuzzy-Γ5 and Logistic etc., it was concluded that inflection point of stand diameter cumulative distribution curve have a main flexible interval (0.4~0.6)and a central distribution point (0.5 or so), for average simulation precision, when the inflection point of distribution function lies in the main interval, its precision is relatively high, and the closer to the central point, the higher the precision is.

Climate-sensitive tree height–diameter allometry for Chinese fir in southern China

Tree height–diameter allometry is crucial in regulating forest ecosystem structure and estimating biomass and carbon storage. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) is the most widely planted tree species across subtropical China. Yet our understanding of how height–diameter allometry of Chinese fir relates to climate over different sites is limited. Remeasured data of 60 plots were used to explore height–diameter allometry of Chinese fir in relation to climate using a three-level NLME approach. The data consisted of five initial planting densities distributed in Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Sichuan provinces (sites) in subtropical China. Results showed that tree heights increased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean warmest month temperature (MWMT) and decreased with increasing annual heat–moisture index (AHM) and summer mean maximum temperature (SMMT). The contribution of MAT to height–diameter allometry was larger than AHM, SMMT and MWMT, which suggested that temperature was a key climate factor that shapes height–diameter allometry of Chinese fir in subtropical China. Trees planted at a higher density level of 6667–10 000 trees ha−1 were slenderer than those planted at a lower density level of 1667–5000 trees ha−1. The scale of height–diameter allometry of Chinese fir nearly held constant in the four sites and was close to 0.5 predicted by the stress-similarity model. Our results will help further understanding of the climate sensitivity affecting the height–diameter allometry of Chinese fir plantations.

The objective of this study was to introduce a new high-performance diameter distribution function. The long-term repeated measurement data sets, consisted of 150 diameter frequency distributions from Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in the southern China, were used. R distribution had presented a more accurate simulation than three-parametric Weibull function. The parameters p, q and r of R distribution proved to be its scale, location and shape parameters, and have the deep relationship with stand-level variables, which means that the parameters of R distribution have the good biological interpretation. The main distribution range of inflection points for the cumulative diameter distribution of Chinese fir plantations was 0.4~0.6.

Advances in research on plant heat shock proteins

Heat shock proteins (otherwise known as HSPs or stress proteins) are created when cells are exposed to elevated temperatures, or to other kinds of environmental stress, such as drought, ethanol, trace metals, or oxygen deprivation. these proteins increased expression can protect the organism against stress-induced damage. They can combine with denatured proteins and maintain the state of solubility, and then fold and assist in the establishment of proper protein configuartion and prevention of unwanted protein aggregation with the existing of Mg~(2+) and ATP. This paper summarized the creation and type, existing and orientation of HSP, and discussed the characteristics, the research advances of gene expression and regulating and its function of heat shock response.

Predicting total and component biomass of Chinese fir using a forecast combination method

Accurate estimates of tree biomass are critical for forest managers to assess carbon stock. Biomass of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata [Lamb.] Hook.) in southern China was assessed by three alternative methods. In the Separate model approach, total and component tree biomass was directly predicted from a regression equation as a function of tree diameter and height. In the Additive model approach, total biomass was predicted as the sum of predictions from all component biomass equations. The Forecast Combination method involved combining predictions from the total biomass equation with the sum of predictions from component biomass equations. Results indicated that the Separate model method outperformed the Additive model method in predicting total and component biomass. The drawback of the Separate model method is that the total is not equal to the sum of its components. The Forecast Combination method provided the overall best prediction for total and component biomass, and still ensured additivity of component biomass predictions.

Preliminary studies on phytochemicals and larvicidal effects of Acacia nilotica L. extracts against Anopheles arabiensis Patton

Acacia nilotica is a natural forest tree with many traditional uses in Sudan. Preliminary laboratory studies were conducted to analyze the phytochemical constituents of three extracts (water, ethanol and petroleum ether) prepared from A. nilotica (leaves and fruits), and to evaluate their larvicidal effects against the malaria vector mosquito,Anopheles arabiensis. The knockdown and residual effects of the extracts were tested in separate bioassay experiments, compared with two standard insecticides. The results showed wide range of secondary metabolites in water and ethanol extracts, mainly alkaloids, saponins, flavones and tannins, while the petroleum ether extracts were dominated by triterpenes and sterols. The fruits extracts seemed to be richer in active compounds than the leaves extracts. Therefore, the petroleum ether extracts exerted better mortality effects than other extracts, with fruits treatments being superior to leaves in all cases. Moreover, the fruits petroleum ether extract (0.5%) showed similar mortality percent (90.0%) as those of the two insecticides at 24 h post exposure. This treatment also manifested significantly the best residual actions up to three weeks, but lied next in order to both insecticides. Hence, the extract was recommended for further studies to indicate its toxic compound(s) and their possible usage for A. arabiensis control. Effect of Stand Density and Soil Layer on Soil Nutrients of a 37-year-old Cunninghamia lanceolata Plantation in Naxi, Sichuan Province, China

In order to study the characteristics of soil nutrient elements and the changes in biomass under different densities and soil layers of forest stand, this paper considers Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) density test forests with five densities (A: 1667 trees·ha−1; B: 3333 trees·ha−1; C: 5000 trees·ha−1; D: 6667 trees·ha−1; E: 10,000 trees·ha−1) as the research objects, located in Naxi District, Sichuan Province, China. Eleven soil physical and chemical property indicators, understory vegetation, and litter biomass were measured. The results were as follows: (1) The stand density had a significant effect on the soil nutrient content, understory vegetation, and litter biomass. A low density is conducive to the accumulation of soil organic matter, hydrolytic N, available P, available K, and total Ca. (2) With the increase in soil depth, the contents of soil organic matter, total N, hydrolytic N, and total P decreased gradually; pH and total Ca decreased gradually; and available P showed a trend of decrease-up-decrease. The soil layers had no significant effect on the total K, total Fe, and total Mg concentrations. (3) Low density (density A or B) was found to be beneficial to the growth of undergrowth vegetation and forest trees, the return of nutrients, long-term soil maintenance, and the stable high yield of Chinese fir plantations.

Genome‐wide and molecular evolution analysis of the Poplar KT/HAK/KUP potassium transporter gene family

Abstract As the largest K + transport gene family, KT / HAK / KUP family plays an important role in plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. However, there is limited information about this family in woody plant species. In this study, with genome‐wide in‐depth investigation, 31 P oplar KT / HAK / KUP transporter genes including six pairs of tandem duplicated and eight pairs of segmental duplicated paralogs have been identified, suggesting segmental and tandem duplication events contributed to the expansion of this family in P oplar. The combination of phylogenetic, exon structure and splice site, and paragon analysis revealed 11 pairs of P oplar KT / HAK / KUP duplicates. For these 11 pairs, all pairs are subject to purify selection, and asymmetric evolutionary rates have been found to occur in three pairs. This study might provide more insights into the underlying evolution mechanisms of trees acclimating to their natural habitat.

The Great 2008 Chinese Ice Storm: Its Socioeconomic–Ecological Impact and Sustainability Lessons Learned

Extreme events often expose vulnerabilities of socioeconomic infrastructures and point to directions of much-needed policy change. Integrated impact assessment of such events can lead to finding of sustainability principles. Southern and central China has for decades been undergoing a breakneck pace of socioeconomic development. In early 2008, a massive ice storm struck this region, immobilizing millions of people. The storm was a consequence of sustained convergence between tropical maritime and continental polar air masses, caused by an anomalously stable atmospheric general circulation pattern in both low and high latitudes. Successive waves of freezing rain occurred during a month period, coating southern and central China with a layer of ice 50–160 mm in thickness. We conducted an integrated impact assessment of this event to determine whether and how the context of socioeconomic and human-disturbed natural systems may affect the transition of natural events into human disasters. We found that 1) without contingency plans, advanced technologies dependent on interrelated energy supplies can create worse problems during extreme events, 2) the weakest link in disaster response lies between science and decision making, 3) biodiversity is a form of long-term insurance for sustainable forestry against extreme events, 4) sustainable extraction of nontimber goods and services is essential to risk planning for extreme events in forest resources use, 5) extreme events can cause food shortage directly by destroying crops and indirectly by disrupting food distribution channels, 6) concentrated economic development increases societal vulnerability to extreme events, and 7) formalized institutional mechanisms are needed to ensure that unexpected opportunities to learn lessons from weather disasters are not lost in distracting circumstances.
