New PtMg Alloy with Durable Electrocatalytic Performance for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Polycrystalline alloy electrodes of Pt with alkaline earth metals (Ca, Sr, and Ba) have been shown to exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) relative to Pt electrodes. The large oxophilicity of the alkaline earth metals makes it challenging to synthesize such alloys. Here, we synthesize a carbon-supported platinum–magnesium (PtMg) alloy with enhanced catalytic activity and durability for the ORR in both a half-cell and single cell when compared to the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst. Employing metallic Mg powder as a precursor can overcome the large oxophilicity of Mg and induce alloying of Mg with Pt, whereas conventional Mg salts do not form an alloy. Density functional theory calculations elucidate the origin of the enhanced catalytic activity and durability. Complementary physical and electrochemical analyses also evidence them in this work. This material holds great application potential and will contribute to elucidation of the effects of alloying Pt with electropositive metals.

A Multi-channel CMOS Feedforward Transimpedance Amplifier Array for LADAR Systems

A multi-channel CMOS transimpedance amplifier(TIA) array is realized in a 0.18-μm CMOS technology for the applications of panoramic scan LADAR systems. Each channel consists of a PIN photodiode and a feed-forward TIA that exploits an inverter input stage followed by a feed-forward common-source amplifier so as to achieve lower noise and higher gain than a conventional voltage-mode inverter TIA. Measured results demonstrate that each channel achieves 76-dBΩ transimpedance gain, 720-MHz bandwidth, and -20.5-dBm sensitivity for 10SUP-9/SUP BER. Also, a single channel dissipates the power dissipation of 30 mW from a single 1.8-V supply, and shows less than -33-dB crosstalk between adjacent channels.

Structural Engineering of Ultrathin ReS₂ on Hierarchically Architectured Graphene for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction

Herein, binary heteronanosheets made of ultrathin ReS2 nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with either a two-dimensional (2D) "sheet-on-sheet" architecture (2D ReS2/RGO) or a three-dimensional hierarchical structure (3D ReS2/RGO) are constructed through rational structure-engineering strategies. In the resultant 3D ReS2/RGO heteronanosheets, the ultrathin ReS2 nanosheets are bridged on the RGO surface through Re–O bonds in a vertically oriented manner, which endows the heteronanosheets with open frameworks and a hierarchical porous structure. In sharp contrast to the 2D ReS2/RGO, the 3D ReS2/RGO heteronanosheets are featured with abundant active sites and channels for efficient electrolyte ions transport. This, coupled with the strong affinity toward oxygen-containing intermediates intrinsically associated with the binary ReS2/RGO structure, imparts excellent oxygen reduction performance to the 3D ReS2/RGO heteronanosheets for potential applications in fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Tunning Copper Sulfide Nanocatalysts for an Efficient Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction

Electrocatalytic performance depends on the surface characteristics of catalysts. Understanding the determinants for adsorption of the reactants and desorption of the products is essential for efficient electrocatalyst design. Electrochemical nitrogen reduction (eNRR) is initiated by nitrogen adsorption and is progressed by hydrogenation to produce ammonia. Despite the intensive development of eNRR catalysts, optimum catalyst design for eNRR is barely understood. Here, we report a designer approach study for investigating the relationship between catalyst surface features (surface geometry and composition) and eNRR performances. To test our idea, facet-controlled copper sulfide hexagonal nanoprisms which only expose two types of facets, {100} and {010}, were deliberately prepared. We studied exposed facet density-dependent eNRR performances by controlling aspect ratios of the Cu 1.81 S nanoprisms. Thereafter, we tested surface dopant effects on eNRR activity and stability by introducing heteroatoms on the Cu 1.81 S nanoprisms. Physical and electrochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by TEM, CV, and DFT analyses and it is discovered that protruded surfaces are active for the eNRR and dopant enhances the eNRR performances. Reconstructing Oxygen‐Deficient Zirconia with Ruthenium Catalyst on Atomic‐Scale Interfaces toward Hydrogen Production

Abstract Downsizing a catalyst nanoparticle (NP) to a single atom (SA) has proven to be highly effective in increasing catalytic activity and decreasing the amount of catalyst required for various electrochemical reactions. However, insufficient stability of the single‐atom site catalysts (SACs) is still a significant challenge for their practical application. Here, SACs firmly bound to stable metal oxide NPs are proposed to dramatically increase the electrochemical activity and stability of SA‐based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Starting from a Ru‐infiltrated, Zr‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF), the tetragonal zirconium oxide (ZrO 2‐x ) NPs‐embedded carbon matrix is fabricated as support through facile pyrolysis. Simultaneously, Ru SAs as active sites are well dispersed on the surface of ZrO 2‐x NPs due to the generation of oxygen vacancies in the tetragonal ZrO 2‐x . The Ru‐ZrO 2‐x SAC exhibits a 4–5 times higher mass activity than commercial Pt and Ru catalysts and superior durability due to strong metal‐support interaction (SMSI) between Ru atoms and ZrO 2‐x substrate.

Compact three-way planar power divider using five-conductor coupled line

In this paper, a planar three-way power divider with compact size is presented using quarter-wave long five-conductor couple line. It is analytically proved that the proposed structure allows the performance of three-way power dividers. Based on the derived equations and simulation, the three-way power divider is designed and measured at 2.0GHz. The measurement shows excellent performance with insertion loss of 0.2dB, and return loss and isolation better than 20dB at a design frequency.

Electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation enabled by surface plasmon polariton-induced hot carriers in Kretschmann configuration

Plasmonic hot carrier generation has attracted increasing attention due to its ability to convert light to electrical energy. The generation of plasmon-induced hot carriers can be achieved via Landau damping in the non-radiative decay process of the plasmonic excitation energy. Localized surface plasmons (LSPs) undergo both radiative and non-radiative decays, while surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) dissipate only via the non-radiative decay. Thus, it is a challenging task to exploit the surface plasmon polaritons for the efficient generation of hot carriers and their applications. In this study, a model hot-carrier-mediated electrocatalytic conversion system was demonstrated using an Au thin film in Kretschmann configuration, which is the representative platform to excite SPPs. AgPt-decorated Au nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) were designed and introduced onto the Au film, creating hot-spots to revolutionize the thin film-based photon-to-carrier conversion efficiency. The glycerol electro-oxidation reaction enabled by such SPP-induced hot carriers was evaluated and exhibited a photon-to-hot carrier conversion efficiency of 2.4 × 10-3%, which is ∼2.5 times enhanced as compared to the efficiency based on the neat Au film.

Design of a low power 10-bit cyclic D/A converter with a Johnson counter and a capacitor swapping technique

A cyclic 10-bit D/A converter based on a Johnson counter and a capacitor swapping technique is described. To reduce capacitor mismatching errors, two capacitors are alternately swapped according to input data. Further, a half differential architecture to reduce offset errors and a Johnson counter to improve the digital logic performance are proposed. With a 0.35 mum Samsung CMOS technology, the measured SFDR is about 65 dB, when the input frequency is 1 MHz at a clock frequency of 2 MHz. The power consumption is only 310 muW at 3.3 V power supply. The measured INL and DNL are within plusmn0.7 LSB and plusmn0.75 LSB, respectively.

CuIr Nanoparticles for Electrochemical Reduction of CO₂ to t‐BuOH

Abstract Recent advances in electrocatalysts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) have led to several promising results, including the large‐scale production of low‐carbon fuels. One of the next steps in this route is the generation of economically and scientifically valuable multicarbon (e.g., C 4 ) chemicals. However, this process has rarely been reported to‐date and has generally suffered from a low production rate ( j partial ≤ 0.097 mA cm −2 ) and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ≤ 1%. This is largely due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts for the complicated and interconnected reaction pathway of C 4 generation. Herein, Cu x Ir 1–x alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are shown to convert CO 2 into (CH 3 ) 3 COH ( t ‐BuOH) with a j partial of 0.207 mA cm –2 at a FE of 14.8%, which is the best performance toward C 4 production demonstrated so far. Furthermore, this study proposes a probable mechanism of C 4 formation based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The findings suggest that the C 4 production is facilitated by the strong electronic interaction between Cu and Ir and the high oxophilicity of the Ir‐rich surface, which enhances the binding strength of oxygen‐bound intermediates. This work opens the potential of Ir‐based alloys for the CO 2 RR and highlights the production of C 4 chemicals beyond the currently available C 1 –C 3 products.
