NaturNet-Redime develops educational programmes towards implementing the EuropeanUnions Strategy for Sustainable Development (SSD). The prototype technology produced demonstrates theutility of our approach for developing educational programmes that increases understanding of sustainabledevelopment and the tools used to make decisions that affect sustainable development. Example contentstresses awareness of environmental, economic, and social factors. As recognized by the SSD, this increasedunderstanding will allow more informed and equitable decisions to be made by increasing publicinvolvement in the decision-making process. All educational; materials of the project will be available viathe NaturNet-Redime web portal, where users will find appropriate learning objects to lead them through thelearning process. Interaction with end users throughout the project provides feedback to the project partnersto ensure that the tools are optimised.

The Connection between Southern Ocean Winds, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and Indo-Pacific Upwelling

Abstract Coupled GCM simulations are analyzed to quantify the dynamic effect of Southern Ocean (SO) winds on transports in the ocean. It is found that the closure for skew diffusivity in the non-eddy-resolving ocean model does not allow for a realistic eddy saturation of the zonal transports in the SO in response to the wind changes and that eddy compensation of the meridional transports in the SO is underestimated too. Despite this underestimated eddy compensation in the SO, however, and in contrast to previous suggestions, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) strength is almost insensitive to SO winds. In the limit of weak SO winds the AMOC waters upwell not in the SO but rather in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Through their effect on sea ice, weaker SO winds also lead to less production of Antarctic Bottom Water and therefore a deeper and stronger AMOC.

On the generation of North Brazil Current rings

A high resolution general circulation model (OGCM) is used to investigate the life cycle of North Brazil Current (NBC) rings. The focus of the study is on explaining the generation mechanisms of the rings and their vertical structure. The OGCM is used in a cone guration simplie ed as much as possible but capable of reproducing a realistic mean circulation of the tropical Atlantic. Three numerical experiments are analyzed: no wind; steady wind; seasonally varying winds. With wind forcing, a consistent scenario emerges for the generation of NBC rings. It is shown e rst that the NECC is barotropically unstable, radiating Rossby waves of the e rst baroclinic mode with a period of 63 days (steady wind) or 50 days (variable wind). These waves ree ect at the Brazilian coast and create about 6‐ 7 anticyclones per year. These anticyclones intensify as they propagate northwestward along the Brazilian coast because of potential vorticity conservation and become NBC rings. Among them, about one per year reaches a depth below 1000 m. These deep rings are created by the merger of a surface NBC ring with an intermediate eddy. The intermediate eddies are produced by the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC) which becomes unstable upon crossing the equator.
