THERMAL PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION STUDIES OF A PHOTOVOLTAIC INTEGRATED HYBRID SOLAR GRAIN DRYER

Solar dryers have become imperative for most of developing countries like India to combat duo challenges of meeting high energy demand for drying and to address climate change scenario. But performance and reliability of solar dryers depends hugely on sunshine period, climatic conditions, therefore, offer a limited control over drying conditions and have lower efficiencies. Solar drying systems supported by Photovoltaic (PV) power plant and hybrid type solar air collector can potentially overpower the disadvantages of solar dryers. In process of development of such robust hybrid dryers it becomes extremely important to asses performance parameters such as collector efficiency, system efficiency and loading density of the system. Further, to evaluate thermal performance and drying parameters of hybrid PV-solar dryer, heat and mass transfer studies during drying becomes critical; computational models can serve as desired tool for this purpose. Therefore, present work aims to conduct thermal and drying analysis in order to examine efficiency of fabricated hybrid PV-solar dryer. Additionally, to develop a 3D finite element model (FEM) for predicting temperature and moisture distribution profile within the system and dry paddy samples in the hybrid dryer. Temperature of the dryer was obtained by placing K-type thermocouple at different positions (collector inlet and outlet, glass cover, absorber plate and drying chamber) attached to data acquisition device. The efficiency of hybrid system was studied at different thermal intensity levels (340, 480, 750, 950 W/m 2 ). The drying experiments were conducted at thermal intensity level of 480 and 750 W/m 2 . Furthermore, COMSOL Multiphysics was employed to develop a 3D finite element model to evaluate the temperature distribution within the collector at no load condition and for predicting moisture profile of paddy grain during the drying period. The collector efficiency at different thermal intensity levels varied from 49.24% to 81.19% and was observed to be highest at thermal intensity of 750 W/m 2 . It was found that temperatures of different components of the system (collector and drying chamber) increases with increasing thermal intensity level. Loading density of the system was found to be 2.63 kg/m 3 and maximum system efficiency of 82.70% was observed at 750 W/m 2 . A drying time of 225 minutes and 105 minutes respectively are required for drying paddy up to a safe moisture level of 12% (wb) at 480 and 750 W/m 2 . The developed model predicts the moisture migration in single paddy kernel successfully. The model was validated with experiments and lower values of statistical measures (mean absolute error (MAE), mean relative error (MRE) and standard error (SE) were found to be 0.003, 0.0531 and 0.0007, respectively) justify a better correlation between experimental and predicted results. It can be concluded that the fabricated PV integrated hybrid -solar drying system can effectively be used for drying food grains. The maximum system efficiency with load and collector efficiency at no load condition were observed at thermal intensity of 750W/m 2 , which makes it suitable even for large scale drying. Furthermore, the developed FE model is capable of predicting moisture, temperature distribution and drying time successfully and can further be used for optimization for drying parameters of different products.

Effect of pretreatment on rehydration, colour and nanoindentation properties of potato cylinders dried using a mixed‐mode solar dryer

Abstract BACKGROUND Desirable quality estimation is an important consumer driver for wider acceptability of mixed‐mode solar drying of potatoes in food industries. The aim of this study is to characterise rehydration, colour, texture, nanoindentaion and microstructure of dried potato samples and to establish the influence of pre‐drying treatment on the above qualities. RESULTS The water absorption capacity and rehydration ability of solar dried potato were significantly influenced by pretreatment followed by rehydration temperature and sample diameter. The redness index ( a *) of pretreated dried samples was lower with simultaneous higher value of yellowness index ( b *), chroma ( C *) and hue angle ( h *). Also, the average nanohardness ( H ) of pretreated samples increased significantly by 22.64% compared to that of untreated samples. The average reduced modulus ( E r ) and Young's modulus ( E s ) of dried potato samples were 1.865 GPa and 1.403 GPa , respectively. Moreover, creep displacement of 43.27 nm was traced in the untreated potato samples during a 20 s dwell time under a constant load of 200 µN in the nanoindentation test. Micrographs revealed more uniform pore spaces in pretreated samples. CONCLUSION Pretreated, thinner potato samples achieved better quality dried products in terms of rehydration, colour, texture and nanohardness indices with significantly improved microstructure and creep resistance properties. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry
