Flooding Reduces Gas Exchange and Growth in Snap Bean

This study was conducted to determine the effect of various flooding durations on the growth, water relations, and photosynthesis of the snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Greenhouse-grown plants of cv . Blue Lake 274 were flooded for 0 (control), 1, 3, 5, or 7 days. Leaf water potential (ψ), stomatal conductance (g s ), transpiration (E), and net photosynthesis (Pn) were measured at the completion of the flooding period and after recovery for 7 days. Root, stem, and leaf dry weights were recorded after plants were allowed to recover from the flooding stress for 7 days. The values for ψ, g s , E, and Pn decreased quadratically with the increase in the duration of flooding. The Pn of plants flooded for 1 day was 17% lower than that of the control and it reached near zero in plants flooded for 7 days. The decrease in Pn after 1 day of flooding was not associated with ψ or g s ; however, for longer duration of flooding, Pn decline coincided with the decline in g s . A week after the cessation of flooding, the level of recovery in ψ, E, and Pn was linear and that in g s quadratic to the duration of prior stress experienced by the plant. However, after recovering for 7 days, none of the flooded plants regained gas exchange activities at par with the control. The relationship of stem dry weight to duration of flooding was linear, while a quadratic model provided the best fit for the regression of root and leaf dry weight on the number of days of flooding. Overall, even 1 day of flooding reduces photosynthesis in snap bean and causes a decrease in dry weight of the plant. the extent of decrease in both increasing with the duration of flooding.

Consistency and Security in Mobile Real Time Distributed Database (MRTDDB): A Combinational Giant Challenge

Many type of Information System are widely used in various fields. With the hasty development of computer network, Information System users care more about data sharing in networks. In traditional relational database, data consistency was controlled by consistency control mechanism when a data object is locked in a sharing mode, other transactions can only read it, but can not update it. If the traditional consistency control method has been used yet, the system's concurrency will be inadequately influenced. So there are many new necessities for the consistency control and security in MRTDDB. The problem not limited only to type of data (e.g. mobile or real‐time databases). There are many aspects of data consistency problems in MRTDDB, such as inconsistency between attribute and type of data; the inconsistency of topological relations after objects has been modified. In this paper, many cases of consistency are discussed. As the mobile computing becomes well liked and the database grows with information sharing security is a big issue for researchers. Consistency and Security of data is a big challenge for researchers because when ever the data is not consistent and secure no maneuver on the data (e.g. transaction) is productive. It becomes more and more crucial when the transactions are used in non‐traditional environment like Mobile, Distributed, Real Time and Multimedia databases. In this paper we raise the different aspects and analyze the available solution for consistency and security of databases. Traditional Database Security has focused primarily on creating user accounts and managing user privileges to database objects. But in the mobility and nomadic computing uses these database creating a new opportunities for research. The wide spread use of databases over the web, heterogeneous client‐server architectures, application servers, and networks creates a critical need to amplify this focus. In this paper we also discuss an overview of the new and old database security challenges.

Reverse Vaccinology: An Epitope Based Approach to Design Vaccines

Background: It has been noticed that the conventional approaches of vaccinology are highly successful to bring down the rate of disease incidences of life threatening infections in 20th century. But these approaches certainly suffer with some delimitation. Such as they take decades to unravel pathogens and antigens related to a disease and even then only few but not all of the antigens are disclosed. Therefore, persistent need of a revolution in this field was required which certainly appeared a decade before and known as “Reverse vaccinology”. Objective: The objective of the present review is to unfold the various facts and figures of the highly valuable approach of Reverse vaccinology by emphasizing its advancements over the period of time. Conclusion: The methodology of Reverse vaccinology is elucidated in an easy and straightforward fashion. Also various available tools for T-cell and B-cell epitope prediction are discussed thoroughly for better understanding of the Reverse vaccinology. Gas Exchange in Tomato in a Cover Crop–Tomato Cropping System

Our objective was to determine the effect of cover crops on the gas exchange activities of a succeeding crop of tomato. No commercial N fertilizer was applied, and the mineralization of cover crops provided the sole source of supplemental N for the tomato crop. Cover crops were planted in randomized complete blocks on 8 Sept. 1994, with treatments consisting of control (fallow), rye, hairy vetch, and crimson clover. A tomato cultivar Mountain Pride was transplanted in the field on 18 Apr. 1995. The gas exchange rate of tomato was measured at flowering (6 June), fruiting (13 July), and senescence (10 Aug.) with infrared gas analyzer using a steady-state gas exchange system. The highest stomatal conductance (g s ) and CO 2 exchange rate (CER) was obtained during flowering and fruiting, respectively. The tomato plant following a legume cover crop conducted water vapor at a significantly higher rate than those preceded by rye or fallow. The CER of tomato planted behind a legume cover crop was also higher compared to those following rye or fallow. The g s ranged from 384 to 1146 mmol·m –2 ·s –1 , and CER varied from 5.7 to 17.8 mol·m –2 ·s –1 depending on the preceding cover crop and the stage of growth of the tomato plant. From the results of this study, it was apparent that, while legume cover crops increased the gas exchange activities of the ensuing tomato crop, nonlegumes had no such effect.

Winter Legume Cover for Sustainable Tomato Production

The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of winter cover cropping with legumes for replacing synthetic N fertilization in tomato production. The following winter/spring fertility treatments were applied: 1) 0 N winter/ 0 N spring, 2) 0 N winter/90 kg·ha -1 N spring, 3) 0 N winter/180 kg·ha -1 N spring, 4) 0 N winter+rye/0 N spring, 5) 0 N winter+hairy vetch/0 N spring, and 6) 0 N winter+crimson clover/0 N spring. In the spring of 1996, tomato cultivar `Mountain Pride' was planted in all plots. The effects of different treatments on plant dry weight and fresh fruit yields were determined. Tomato following legumes or supplied with 90 kg·ha -1 fertilizer N produced highest plant dry weight, while 0 N winter/0 N spring and 0 N winter+rye/0 N spring produced plants with least dry weights. Treatments differed in a similar fashion also for fresh fruit yields. The results suggested that winter legumes were at par with commercial N fertilizer in supplying needed inorganic N to the succeeding tomato crop soil.

SEASONAL PATTERN OF VEGETATIVE GROWTH IN OKRA

Little is known about the morphology of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench) plant. This information is critical to understanding of plant growth and possible factors limiting yield. Therefore, a field study was conducted during 1989 to determine the changes in leaf number, leaf dry weight and stem dry weight in okra during the fruiting period. Four okra genotypes, PI-178818, PI-211573, Lee and Clemson spineless, were planted in randomized complete block design with four replications. All four genotypes had similar stem dry weight, but differed significantly in leaf number and leaf dry weight. During the reproductive period, 42% of new leaves, 61% of leaf dry weight and 82% of stern dry weight were formed. PI-178818 had highest leaf number and maximum leaf dry weight, but produced lowest fruit yield. The results suggested that since vegetative growth and fruiting proceeds simultaneously in okra, partitioning of dry weight to pod maybe critical for high okra yields.
