Generation of Self-Accelerating Beams Using Tilted Pendant Droplets

We demonstrate generation and dynamical control of self-accelerating beams simply using tilted UV-resin pendant-droplets. The curved trajectories of such large-angle self-bending beams are directly observed through scattering of yeast-cell suspensions, in excellent agreement with simulations.

Tunable Optical Nonlinearity and Self-Collimation of Light in Food Dye Solutions

Food dyes are widely used in scientific research apart from the food colorant industry. In this work, we investigate nonlinear propagation of optical beams in food dye solutions of different colors, observing tunable self-defocusing nonlinearity and self-collimating effects of optical beams during propagation. We discuss possible mechanisms leading to optical nonlinearity by numerical simulation and theoretical analysis of the optical forces, and show that the nonlinearity in such solutions is mainly attributed to the thermo-optic effects. In addition, with appropriately mixed food dye solutions, we observe that nonlinear response arises at otherwise inactive wavelengths, leading to coupling of two self-collimated beams of different wavelengths. These results illustrate the possibility of employing low-cost food dye solutions for optical limiting and switching applications.

Initializing the flux state of multiwell inductively isolated Josephson junction qubits

We describe a technique for initializing the flux state of an inductively isolated Josephson junction, fulfilling an essential requirement for using the device as a qubit. By oscillating the applied magnetic flux with a specified amplitude and offset, we can select any of the allowed long-lived metastable flux states. We applied this technique to $\mathrm{Nb}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Nb}$ and $\mathrm{Al}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Al}$ devices with from 10 to over 100 distinct flux states at temperatures as low as $25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mK}$. In a ten-state system with an initial probability $p=0.13$ to be in the desired flux state, we achieved $p=0.999\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}96$ after 50 oscillations at $22.6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}$. The technique is generally applicable to other systems with multiple metastable wells (including rf SQUIDs), requires no additional readout or bias lines, involves minimal energy dissipation, and appears to scale favorably with the number of qubits.

Spectroscopy of Three-Particle Entanglement in a Macroscopic Superconducting Circuit

We study the quantum mechanical behavior of a macroscopic, three-body, superconducting circuit. Microwave spectroscopy on our system, a resonator coupling two large Josephson junctions, produced complex energy spectra well explained by quantum theory over a large frequency range. By tuning each junction separately into resonance with the resonator, we first observe strong coupling between each junction and the resonator. Bringing both junctions together into resonance with the resonator, we find spectroscopic evidence for entanglement between all 3 degrees of freedom and suggest a new method for controllable coupling of distant qubits, a key step toward quantum computation.
