The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) experiment has observed purely leptonic decays of the ${D}_{s}$ meson in the reaction ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}_{s}^{+}{D}_{s}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. Three events are observed in which one ${D}_{s}$ decays hadronically to $\ensuremath{\varphi}\ensuremath{\pi}$, ${\overline{K}}^{*0}K$, or ${\overline{K}}^{0}K$, and the other decays leptonically to $\ensuremath{\mu}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ or $\ensuremath{\tau}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$. With the assumption of $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\tau}$ universality, values of the branching fraction, $B({D}_{s}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({1.5}_{\ensuremath{-}0.6\ensuremath{-}0.2}^{+1.3+0.3})%$, and the ${D}_{s}$ pseudoscalar decay constant, ${f}_{{D}_{s}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({4.3}_{\ensuremath{-}1.3\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+1.5+0.4})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{2}$ MeV, are obtained.

Measurement of the mass of the τ lepton

A data-driven energy scan in the immediate vicinity of the τ pair production threshold has been performed using the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. Approximately 5 pb−1 of data, distributed over 12 scan points, have been collected. A previous mass value for the τ lepton, obtained using only the eμ final state, has been published. In this paper, the final BES result on the mass measurement is presented. The analysis is based on the combined data from the ee, eμ, eh, μμ, μh, and hh final states, where h denotes a charged π or K. A maximum likelihood fit to the τ pair production cross section data yields the value mτ=1776.96−0.21 -0.17+0.18+0.25 MeV. © 1995 The American Physical Society.Received 25 July 1995DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.53.20©1996 American Physical Society

Direct measurement of B(D{sup 0}{yields}{phi}X{sup 0}) and B(D{sup +}{yields}{phi}X{sup +})

The first measurement of B(D{sup 0}{yields}{phi}X{sup 0}) and an upper limit for B(D{sup +}{yields}{phi}X{sup +}) are determined from 22.3 pb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation data at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A recoil charge method is applied to charm threshold data to determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from 9054{+-}309{+-}416 reconstructed D{sup 0}, D{sup +} mesons. The branching fractions B(D{sup 0}{yields}{phi}X{sup 0})=(1.71{sub -0.71}{sup +0.76}{+-}0.17)%, and B(D{sup +}{yields}{phi}X{sup +})<1.8% are determined from 10 events with a reconstructed D and a recoiling {phi}. In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit of B(D{sup +}{yields}{phi}e{sup +}X{sup 0})<1.6% is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of the D{sup +}. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

First measurement of the branching fraction of the decayψ(2S)→τ+τ−

The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau pair has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is $B_{\tau\tau}=(2.71\pm 0.43 \pm 0.55) \times 10^{-3}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and mu+mu of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be $(252 \pm 37)$ keV.

The processes $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\overline{p}$ have been studied using a sample of $3.79\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}\ensuremath{\psi}(2S)$ decays. We determine the total width of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c0}$ to be ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c0}}^{\mathrm{tot}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}14.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.0\mathrm{MeV}$. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction $B({\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\overline{p})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(15.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. Branching fractions of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c0,2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ are also reported.
