Soil Water Regime Affecting Correlation of Carbon Isotope Discrimination with Yield and Water‐Use Efficiency of Winter Wheat

Improving crop water‐use efficiency (WUE) is critical in securing food production under arid and semiarid regions, but a quick and accurate method for quantifying crop WUE is lacking. A field study on winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) was conducted under six irrigation regimes in two growing seasons (2011–2012 and 2012–2013) to determine the sampling time and the condition of soil moisture on the relationship of C isotope discrimination (Δ 13 C; measured by flag leaves, other leaves, and kernel) with grain yield and WUE at different levels (leaf level as WUE L , biomass level as WUE b and grain‐yield level as WUE g ). The results showed that the accumulated average soil water condition affected the leaf and kernel Δ 13 C. The kernel Δ 13 C and flag leaf Δ 13 C after heading were significantly related to the final biomass and grain production ( P < 0.05), but their relationship to WUE g and WUE b was variable as a result of the effects of seasonal weather conditions on harvest index (HI) and soil evaporation. Kernel Δ 13 C or flag leaf Δ 13 C can be used to assess the yield of winter wheat but may not be able to predict the WUE g and WUE b . The WUE L was related to the soil water condition at the time when the measurements occurred. The WUE L might be a useful indicator of WUE at yield level when soil water condition at measuring of WUE L could represent the average soil water condition of the whole growing season of the crop.

Simulation of soil evaporation under different ground coverage with semi-empirical models

Minimizing soil evaporation is a key element in improving water use efficiency in dry areas. Experiments were conducted in the winter wheat field during 2004-2005 to compare effects of different row spacing on soil evaporation. A model to estimate soil evaporation was developed based on the experimental data. The reference crop evapotranspiration ( ET 0 ) was estimated by the Penman-Montieth equation, and the factors affecting evaporation under crop canopy were divided into both the radiation item ( ET s1 ) and the aerodynamics item ( ET s2 ) according to the degree of crop canopy coverage ( f c ). The simulation equation for actual evaporation, combining with soil moisture parameter, was established in this paper. In this study, a light meter was utilized to measure f c , which replaced leaf are index (LAI) in evaporation estimation. In comparison with the measured evaporation by micro-lysimeters (ML) in four row spacing: 7.5 cm, 15 cm, 22.5 cm and 30 cm, tested in a randomized block design, the simulated daily evaporation had root mean square errors (RMSE) of 0.22 mm, 0.24 mm, 0.25 mm 0.26 mm and a bias of 0.01 mm, 0.02 mm, -0.08 mm, -0.03 mm respectively. Results showed that using canopy coverage factor to replace leaf area index could effectively estimate soil evaporation.

Effects of temperature rising on soil hydrothermal properties, winter wheat growth and yield

Global warming has become evident and rising temperature has great influence in ecosystem balance and crop growth. To simulate climate warming, the infrared radiators were applied in field to increase temperature. The increased soil temperature up to 40 cm depth and the difference was larger in night than in daytime. The magnitude of elevated temperature was reduced with rising atmosphere temperature. Warming increased soil heat flux, but soil heat storage was not influenced. Moreover, the elevated temperature changed water distribution and storage in soil profile. Before mid-April, soil water content and water storage were lower for the elevated temperature than for normal temperature. However, after mid-April, the elevated temperature produced the reverse effect on soil water content and water storage. Furthermore, warming accelerated winter wheat growth, and shortened the growth season by about 10 days. Meanwhile, warming increased the key biological parameters of winter wheat, e.g. plant height and spikes length, under no fertilizer limitation. Elevated temperature decreased biomass, spikes per mu and grains per spike of wheat. In the field of elevated temperature, thousand grain weight of winter wheat was increased, while winter wheat yields decreased by 25%.

The effect of minimum tillage and no-tillage on growth and yield of winter wheat

The growth and yield of winter wheat were studied on field experiments under different tillage models in North China Plain.Based on tillage models,6 treatments were set including plough,rotate and zero tillage.The results showed that the tillage fashions greatly affected the ratio of leaf emergence in wheat.The ratio leaf emergence in plough was 27.1%-46.2% higher than that in zero tillage.Because of mulching the soil temperature under zero tillage in turning green stage was lower than that of other treatments,which led to delay 7-10 days of wheat growing season and affect grain filling.Owing to less water evaporation and undeveloped wheat roots under zero tillage,it was easy to leaching of nitrate nitrogen below the soil depth of 100 cm.As a result,both the ratio of nitrogen utilization and the wheat yield decreased.

Stereoselective Pharmacokinetics and Chiral Inversions of Some Chiral Hydroxy Group Drugs

Chiral safety, especially chiral drug inversion in vivo, is the top priority of current scientific research. Medicine researchers and pharmacists often ignore that one enantiomer will be converted or partially converted to another enantiomer when it is ingested in vivo. So that, in the context that more than 50% of the listed drugs are chiral drugs, it is necessary and important to pay attention to the inversion of chiral drugs.The metabolic and stereoselective pharmacokinetic characteristics of seven chiral drugs with one chiral center in the hydroxy group were reviewed in vivo and in vitro including the possible chiral inversion of each drug enantiomer. These seven drugs include (S)-Mandelic acid, RS-8359, Tramadol, Venlafaxine, Carvedilol, Fluoxetine and Metoprolol.The differences in stereoselective pharmacokinetics could be found for all the seven chiral drugs, since R and S isomers often exhibit different PK and PD properties. However, not every drug has shown the properties of one direction or two direction chiral inversion. For chiral hydroxyl group drugs, the redox enzyme system may be one of the key factors for chiral inversion in vivo.In vitro and in vivo chiral inversion is a very complex problem and may occur during every process of ADME. Nowadays, research on chiral metabolism in the liver has the most attention, while neglecting the chiral transformation of other processes. Our review may provide the basis for the drug R&D and the safety of drugs in clinical therapy.
