Design of a low-cost positioning framework for location aided energy efficient routing

In the area of mobile, ad-hoc networks, the quest for a GPS-free yet, location aided routing protocol is on for quite sometime. We have surveyed a number of GPS free position based routing algorithms. Specialized hardware in GPS-enabled nodes tends to increase the solution cost. On the other hand, completely GPS-free solutions typically stress on building a network-wide coordinate system. Such systems suffer from lack of mobility and high computational overhead. The proposed framework in this paper is characterized by GPS scarce positioning mechanism. A new network building methodology has been proposed by using only a handful of GPS enabled nodes. Lower dependence on specialized GPS hardware reduces the total cost of implementing the framework. Simulation results show that using the proposed positioning framework, Location aided routing (LAR) turns out to be more efficient in lowering mean hop and hence in utilizing the limited energy of mobile nodes. The improved and extended LAR protocol has been referred in the rest of the paper as Location Aided Cluster Based Energy-efficient Routing (LACBER) protocol.

Performance evaluation of RW‐Quadrotor and Bi‐Quadrotor for payload delivery

Abstract Payload delivery is one of the many Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications that save time, energy, and human resources. The present simulation study compares rotary‐wing quadrotors (RW‐Quadrotors) and tail‐sitter biplane quadrotors (Bi‐Quadrotors) under payload delivery conditions that help to choose the best UAV for the particular mission. A comparative study is performed based on (i) time taken to accomplish the given mission, (ii) trajectory tracking performance, (iii) motor speed throughout the entire flight envelope, and (iv) remains SoC (State of Charge) after the mission. Furthermore, a Backstepping Controller (BSC) and an Adaptive Backstepping Controller (ABSC) are developed for both UAVs to handle mass changes during flight while Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used for the gain optimization. MATLAB Simulink‐based numerical simulation reveals that the Bi‐Quadrotor has a lower average rotor speed than the RW‐Quadrotor. However, the Bi‐Quadrotor's SoC after the mission is higher than the RW‐Quadrotor, and it took less time to accomplish the mission. The ABSC designed for RW‐Quadrotor and Bi‐Quadrotor effectively handles mass change during the mission. However, the BSC controller increases energy consumption for the Bi‐Quadrotor in the presence of wind gusts.

Survey on Vortex Shedding Tabs as Supersonic Jet Control

This study provides an overview of the tab-controlled jets to understand and predict the influence of mixing promoting vortices at speeds ranging from subsonic to supersonic. A detailed description of various features of the circular jets controlled by tab-like vortex generators is provided. Here, both the experimental and the numerical investigations on the impacts of tabs on the mixing enhancement and noise suppression are presented. Following a brief introduction about subsonic and supersonic circular jets, this study discusses the influences of certain key parameters on mixing characteristics, including the effect of tab geometry, tab number, tab orientation, tab size, and tab position relative to nozzle outlet. Subsequently, their effect on noise suppression is also reviewed. The detrimental effect of tabs in terms of thrust penalty is described. Finally, the future direction of research on the tab-controlled jets is outlined.
