Nano-Silver Mediated Polymerization of Pyrrole: Synthesis and Gas Sensing Properties of Polypyrrole (PPy)/Ag Nano-Composite

Thermal polymerization of pyrrole was performed using silver nitrate as source of silver ions followed by its conversion to Polypyrrole (PPy)/Ag nano-comoposites without using any external oxidizing agent or solvent. The formation of PPy was monitored by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy showing a band at approximately 464 nm. XRD measurement confirmed characteristic peaks for face centered cubic (fcc) silver and presence of PPy at 2 theta of approximately 23 degrees suggesting the formation of PPy/Ag nanocomposite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed non-aggregated spherical Ag nano-particles of about 5-10 nm. PPy/Ag thick film acts as a NH3 sensor at 100 degrees C, a H2S sensor at 250 degrees C and CO2 sensor at 350 degrees C. The thick films showed capability to recognize various gases at different operating temperature.

Effect of Organic Chromophore on Nano-Sized TiO₂: Optical Properties and Humidity Sensing

ABSTRACT This paper reports synthesis and optical properties of meta-nitroaniline (mNA)-doped TiO2 nanoparticles. As-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are well dispersed in solvents such as DMF and methanol and their absorption and emission properties indicated marked differences as against the original TiO2 nanoparticles. The absorption wavelength of as-prepared TiO2 shifted from ∼325 nm to about 400 nm and overlapped with the absorption bands of mNA, indicating a red-shift of about 60–70 nm. In photoluminescence (PL) measurement, the presence of mNA enabled TiO2 nanoparticles to show emission bands between ∼400 and 425 nm, due possibly to electron transfer from the chromophore to semiconductor. The organic coated nano-TiO2 were tested for their humidity sensing properties. Pellet of about 1 cm diameter and 0.4 cm thickness were annealed at 200°C and 400°C for 3 h. After each step of annealing, pellets were exposed to humidity in a specially designed humidity chamber. Decrease in the resistance for the entire range of humidity was observed with increasing relative humidity (%RH).

SHG Relaxation Behaviour In M-nitroaniline Doped PMMA Guest-host System

In present work, we have reported the second harmonic generation (SHG) property on the Guest-Host system based on optical grade poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and m-Nitroaniline (m-NA) for their use in optoelectronic devices. SHG signal of the m-NA doped PMMA freestanding films was determined using Nd:YAG laser by varying input energy from 6 mJ to 18 mJ. For evaluating SHG, films were poled at various temperatures to align the m-NA guest molecules in PMMA host matrix. Doped films were also characterized isothermally by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to get the information about loss of m-NA molecules at poling temperatures. It was found that there is no change in glass transition temperature. SHG intensity increases as the poling temperature increases. However, SHG signal intensity decreases as the decay time of poled films increases. After one week of poling more than half of the original SHG intensity is retained. The decay in SHG intensity might be attributed to the relaxation of m-NA molecules from thermodynamic unstable state to the equilibrium state.
