A short review of basic concepts on Global Positioning System(GPS) and World Geodetic System(WGS) is given.Present situation and problems of GPS technology in forestry application are discussed,and some measures to improve the precision and application level of GPS are presented.

Green biomass and leaf area of Masson pine, broad leaved shrub and herb were measured in the young Masson pine forests in Jiangshan City and Quxiano County, Zhejiang Province in 1994. The regression equations between the shade density and the green biomass of arbor layer, bush layer and field layer were established; and the leaf area indexes of the forests were given.

Detecting Technique of Forest Diseases and Insects by Airborne Video

Since the mid-1990s, Airborne Video Systems (Airborne Videography) has been introduced and applied in China. It consists of data capturing, data processing, spot investigations for disaster site and aerocraft. This article mainly discussed its applied approaches and the current situation of research and application in disaster monitoring production for Mason pine caterpillars (Dendrolimus punctatus Walker)and pine wood nematode disease(Bursaphelenchus xylophilus Nickle) as well. It demonstrated that the integrated monitoring system of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System and Global Positioning System has characteristics of flexibility, convenience and low expense. It will exert a great influence over the forest insects and disaster monitoring.

Sub-compartment division based on SPOT-5 remote sensing images.

The main method of current forest resources sub-compartment division is adopted to draw division boundary according to the condition of opposite hillside in the field,which is subjective and lacks of scientific objectivity. In this paper,firstly,we analyzed the characteristics of SPOT-5 remote sensing data and the shortcomings of the sub-compartment division arising from small field of vision due to miscalculation in current forest. Secondly,we put forward the method of data processing and screen visual interpretation,such as establishing identity of SPOT-5 image interpretation,field verification and additional measurement which were suitable for the SPOT-5 remote sensing data when it was used in the division of forest resources survey. Finally,the advantages and feasibility of computer automatic interpretations of the SPOT-5 image were discussed when it was used in the sub-compartment division. This study will provide guidance and reference for forest division.
