Codling Moths: Suppression of Populations from Releases of Sterile Insects in the Wenas Valley of Washington, 19721

Population estimates for native Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) are based on infested fruit. Orchards (419 acres) produced an estimated 21,025 larvae during the season notwithstanding the total release of 1.8 million males and females irradiated with 30 krad of gamma irradiation and removal of infested fruit. Trapping data indicated critically low ratios of sterile: native males (<20:1) in various areas of the release orchards during at least 7 weekly trapping periods. A 3-yr comparison of the numbers of native males trapped indicated a 93% population reduction throughout the valley and 63% within the 3 major commercial orchards. The principal causative factors for this reduction are chemical sprays and removal of abandoned host trees. Although the sterile-insect-technique limited the potential growth of the codling moth population, a 1972 harvest infestation in the Northwestern-Longmire orchard of 0.129% compared to 0.002% for 1971 indicated the need for modifications of the program or alternative control measures.

Codling Moth: Effects of Releasing Irradiated Mixed Sexes or Females or Males Only on Reproductive Potential of a Native Population1

Separate releases of sterile Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) were made throughout the growing season of 1973 in three 31-acre blocks (separated by 500 ft) of a large commercial orchard in the Wenas Valley, WA. Releases consisted of males and females irradiated with 25 krad, females only irradiated with 15 krad, and males only irradiated with 25 krad. A 35-acre control block that was treated with standard applications of insecticide was used as a control. Infestations in each release area during the season and at harvesttime were compared with conservative estimates of infestations projected in the absence of control. These comparisons showed the area treated with insecticide with a theoretically calculated 99.7% suppression of the population vs. 91.5, 89.7, and 88.5% suppression due to releases of males and females, females only, and males only, respectively. When the infestations in 1972 were compared with those in 1973, there was a net of 69 and 27% less damaged fruit in the areas treated with releases of females only and mixed sexes, respectively, and a 100% increase in damaged fruit in the area treated with releases of males only.

Release of Unpackaged Adult Codling Moths from Rotary or Fixed-Wing Aircraft12

Average rates of recovery from releases of unpackaged Adult Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) from a fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter were 72.3 and 86.2%, respectively, of the recovery from ground releases (based on catches of released male months in traps baited with virgin females). The low recover of moths released from the fixed-wing aircraft was attributed primarily to physical damage inflicted during the passage through the release tube and the entry into the fast-moving air stream. When these rates of recovery in the filed were checked by releasing male moths from fixed-wing aircraft over a snowfield in January, retrieving these moths, and releasing them again in a heated greenhouse, the 2 rates were found to be similar.

Testing Selected Nozzles for Deposit Efficiency in Aerial Application of Spray

ABSTRACT THE recovery efficiencies of selected spray systems that were mounted on a fixed-wing agricultural air-craft were determined by comparing the quantity of spray collected on targets with the quantity sprayed from the nozzle. A series of flights was made for each test system. These flights were alternated with flights of a standard system. The recovery efficiency of the standatd spray system was corrected to fit the conditions under which the test system was flown. Comparison ratios were calculated by dividing the recovery efficiencies for the test systems by the corrected recovery efficiencies for the standard system. The ratios obtained were used to com-pare the test spray systems with the standard system and with each other. The volume median droplet diameter and the number of droplets deposited per unit area on sample cards were also determined for each spray system.
