Corrosion of Ferrous Structural Alloys in Biomass Derived Fuels and Organic Acids

This work investigated the corrosivity of biomass-derived liquid fuels and organic acids associated with bio-oils and conducted a corrosion compatibility evaluation of several structural ferrous alloys in the fuels and acids. The acidity parameters and solution conductivity values were higher in raw pyrolysis bio-oils than postprocessed oils with significant corrosion attack for carbon steel and Fe-2.25Cr-1Mo. However, higher-grade stainless steels, ferritic Fe-15Cr (15Cb) and austenitic types 304L and 316L, showed negligible corrosion loss, whereas lower-Cr ferritic grades 409, 410, and 416 were attacked. Metal leaching tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed superior corrosion resistance of 316 over 410 stainless steels in solutions of formic and oxalic acids that can be present in bio-oils. The corrosion evaluation methods utilized in this work provide effective screening tools to identify the compatible structural alloys for bio-oils.

Corrosion of 316H Stainless Steel Specimens in Two FLiBe (LiF-BeF<sub>2</sub>) Salt Batches

the TCL. Cr loss was apparent to a depth of ~5 µm in the hot leg. Post-exposure analysis of the salt showed major increases in the Cr, Fe, and Mn contents. The TCL was modeled using the TRANSFORM code. Modeled values matched the experimental temperature measurements showing that TRANSFORM is capable of accurately simulating the TCL conditions.

Assessing Stainless Steel Compatibility in Flowing FLiBe Salt

To address the considerable interest in LiF-BeF2 (FLiBe) compatibility for fission and fusion reactor applications, static and flowing compatibility experiments were conducted to assess the compatibility with type 316H stainless steel. In static testing at 550° and 650 °C, small mass changes were measured and posttest characterization of the FLiBe showed increased levels of Fe, Cr, Ni and Mn in the salt. Adding Be in the static salt test reduced the dissolution of Fe and Ni. An initial assessment of mass transfer in flowing FLiBe without a Be addition was conducted using a monometallic 316H thermal convection loop (TCL) operated for 1000 h with a peak temperature of 650 °C. Similar to prior results in flowing FLiNaK salt, the 316H specimens exhibited small mass losses in the hot leg. Posttest characterization of the 316H specimens suggested Cr surface depletion in the hot and cold legs and possibly Fe deposition in the cold leg. To further understand this behavior, Cr and Fe dissolution was measured in static FLiBe at 550–650 °C.

Corrosion of 316H Stainless Steel in Flowing FLiBe (LiF-BeF<sub>2</sub>)

For the next generation of molten salt reactors, an alloy with pressure vessel code approval and higher temperature capability than Hastelloy N is required. Consequently, several reactor designers have reportedly chosen to build the reactor containment vessel from 316H stainless steel. In order to minimize corrosion of the stainless steel by the molten fluoride salt (2LiF-BeF2), it is proposed to add beryllium metal to the salt to react with impurities and provide a means to lower the oxidation potential thus making the salt less corrosive. Even so, there is a concern whether the beryllium would react with components of the stainless steel. To address this concern, static capsule tests were conducted in which selected amounts of beryllium were added to capsules containing 2LiF-BeF2 (FLiBe) salt and 316H stainless steel and Hastelloy N samples. Following exposure, the samples were cleaned and examined using a variety of analysis techniques including, optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, XPS, LIBS, XRD and EPMA. Tensile samples were also exposed in capsules, and those were subjected to tensile testing. Notably, It was found that for the level of beryllium additions used in this study, intermetallic compounds were formed which could be detrimental to the long-term performance of the 316H stainless steel.
