Heterosis and Combining Ability in Cowpeas

Extent of heterosis and combining ability were studied in a diallel cross of cowpeas for yield, pod length, seeds per pod and 100-seed weight. Heterosis in yield seemed to be influenced by heterosis in pod length and seeds per pod. The best hybrid combination for grain yield was C 34 × C 85 which showed heterosis over mid parent to the extent of 39 per cent.

Effect of individual and work parameters on musculoskeletal health of manual agriculture workers

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a major work-related issue for farmers. The aim of the current research is to find out the occurrence and risk factors for MSDs in the manual agriculture workers. A sample of Indian workers was surveyed (N = 138). An information theory method was investigated to determine the comparative feature of mathematical models for a specified group of data collected on MSDs, individual and work parameters. The result from the Akaike information criterion analysis used further to select a model of the extreme fit. Risk Factors associated with MSDs in the final model with 95% bootstrap contained age (40.5%), gender (24.5%), education (5.2%), income satisfaction (10.6%), tool satisfaction (8.4%) and smoking (10.8%). Problem attentions to MSDs are identical in developed and newly industrialised countries. However, factors are not exact similar. Interventions targeted at manual activities for degrading risk factors that furnish to MSDs are necessary.

Continuous intraoperative optical coherence tomography-guided shield ulcer debridement with tuck in multilayered amniotic membrane transplantation

The aim of this study is to describe a modified surgical technique of continuous intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT)-guided shield ulcer debridement with tuck-in multilayered Amniotic membrane transplantation (ML AMT) in vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) with shield ulcer with plaque.Seven eyes of seven patients presenting with VKC with shield ulcer with plaque were enrolled in this prospective case series and planned for shield ulcer debridement with ML AMT. Debridement of the ulcer base with double-layered AMT was done under the continuous guidance of iOCT. The main outcome measure was the time for complete reepithelialization. Statistical analysis was performed using the Stata-14.0 program for Windows. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation/median (minimum-maximum) and frequency percentage as applicable.The surgery could be completed successfully in all cases and iOCT could provide real-time assessment of the depth of dissection during the entire procedure. The duration of complete healing and disintegration of amniotic membrane varied from 7 to 12 days. Recurrence was not seen in any case till 2 months follow-up.iOCT provides continuous monitoring of the depth of dissection and allows for a safe and complete debridement of the shield ulcer with plaque.

Study of Musculoskeletal Disorders in Farmers Involved in Manual Paddy Bagging Task

Filling paddy bags by hand is a common task during harvesting, but it can cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in various body regions. The current study aims to evaluate posture and find an association between MSDs and body posture scores. The Nordic questionnaire and rapid entire body assessment (REBA) were used to collect MSDs and postures from farmers. The MSD in various body regions (neck, elbows, hands, upper back, knees, ankles, lower back, hips, thighs, and buttocks) was found to be 6.7%, 10%, 3.3%, 6.7%, 16.7%, 20%, and 10%, respectively, during the last 12-month period. In REBA score findings, holding bags, filling the bucket, and the bag were found to have a very high risk of causing MSDs. Despite the fact that MSDs are not very common among farmers who engage in paddy bagging tasks, posture analysis reveals what causes MSDs. Further investigation is needed to improve and reduce MSDs.

Non-powered hand tool improvement research for prevention of work-related problems: a review

In lower-middle-income countries, most of the work is performed manually using non-ergonomic hand tools which results in work-related health problems. Using hand tools designed in line with ergonomic principles may play an important role in reducing work-related health concerns significantly.Scientific databases (PubMed, EBSCOhost) and e-publishers were searched for articles from 1985 to 2015 using the following keywords: 'hand tool', 'ergonomics', 'usability' and 'design'. After applying selection criteria to 614 articles, 58 articles related to the physical design of hand tools were selected.Seventeen articles were related to hand tool improvement in the manufacturing sector. Musculoskeletal disorders were found to be the most frequently occurring work-related health problems. Most of the articles focused on product and qualitative variables for improvement in hand tools, while few articles considered human and task variables.Literature shows that hand tool improvement studies have been given less importance in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. However, some work of significance is reported in the agriculture sectors of these countries. Hence, it is concluded that ergonomic intervention in hand tools is much needed for those industries which employ traditional methods of working.
