Quantitative study of large composite-fermion systems

Quantitative investigations of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) have been limited in the past to systems containing typically fewer than 10--12 particles, except for the 1/(2p+1) Laughlin states. We develop a method, using the framework of the composite-fermion theory, that enables a treatment of much bigger systems and makes it possible to obtain accurate quantitative information for other incompressible states as well. After establishing the validity of this method by comparison with few-particle exact-diagonalization results, we compute the ground-state energies and transport gaps for a number of FQHE states.

Kohn-Sham Theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We formulate the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations for the fractional quantum Hall effect by mapping the original electron problem into an auxiliary problem of composite fermions that experience a density dependent effective magnetic field. Self-consistent solutions of the KS equations demonstrate that our formulation captures not only configurations with nonuniform densities but also topological properties such as fractional charge and fractional braid statistics for the quasiparticles excitations. This method should enable a realistic modeling of the edge structure, the effect of disorder, spin physics, screening, and of fractional quantum Hall effect in mesoscopic devices.

Role of discrete slab phonons in carrier relaxation in semiconductor quantum wells

We study processes in which excited electrons in semiconductor quantum wells lose energy by emitting slab LO phonons of the quantum well, namely, bulklike confined phonons and interface phonons. We consider both intrasubband and intersubband relaxation and show that, consistent with a recent experimental finding, phonon selection rules are responsible for a large reduction of intersubband relaxation rates.

A Fermion Crystal with Quantum Coherence

When two-dimensional electrons are subjected to a very strong magnetic field, they are believed to form a triangular Wigner crystal. We demonstrate that, in the entire crystal phase, this crystal is very well represented by a composite-fermion-crystal wave function, revealing that it is not a simple Hartree-Fock crystal of electrons but an inherently quantum mechanical crystal characterized by a non-perturbative binding of quantized vortices to electrons, which establishes a long range quantum coherence in it. It is suggested that this has qualitative consequences for experiment.

Fractional Statistics in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

A microscopic confirmation of the fractional statistics of the quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect has so far been lacking. We calculate the statistics of the composite-fermion quasiparticles at nu=1/3 and nu=2/5 by evaluating the Berry phase for a closed loop encircling another composite-fermion quasiparticle. A careful consideration of subtle perturbations in the trajectory due to the presence of an additional quasiparticle is crucial for obtaining the correct value of the statistics. The conditions for the applicability of the fractional statistics concept are discussed.

Role of Exciton Screening in the7/3Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The excitations of the 7/3 fractional Hall state, one of the most prominent states in the second Landau level, are not understood. We study the effect of screening by composite fermion excitons and find that it causes a strong renormalization at 7/3, thanks to a relatively small exciton gap and a relatively large residual interaction between composite fermions. The excitations of the 7/3 state are to be viewed as composite fermions dressed by a large exciton cloud. Their wide extent has implications for experiments as well as for analysis of finite system exact diagonalization studies.

Enigmatic4/11State: A Prototype for Unconventional Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The origin of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at 4/11 and 5/13 has remained controversial. We make a compelling case that the FQHE is possible here for fully spin polarized composite fermions, but with an unconventional underlying physics. Thanks to a rather unusual interaction between composite fermions, the FQHE here results from the suppression of pairs with a relative angular momentum of three rather than one, confirming the exotic mechanism proposed by Wójs, Yi, and Quinn [Phys. Rev. B 69, 205322 (2004)]. We predict that the 4/11 state reported a decade ago by Pan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 016801 (2003)] is a conventional partially spin polarized FQHE of composite fermions, and we estimate the Zeeman energy where a phase transition into the unconventional fully spin polarized state will occur.

Composite fermion theory of collective excitations in fractional quantum Hall effect

The low energy neutral excitations of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states are called collective modes or magnetic excitons. This work develops techniques for computing their dispersion at general filling fractions for reasonably large systems. New structure is revealed; in particular, the collective mode at 1/3 is found to possess several minima, with the energy of the principal minimum significantly smaller than the earlier estimate. \pacs{this http URL, 73.20.Dx, 73.20.Mf}
