Beam Manipulation Mechanisms of Dielectric Metasurfaces

Dielectric metasurfaces can achieve flexible beam manipulations. Herein, we study dielectric metasurfaces with different refractive indices, periods, incident angles, and cross-sectional shapes to determine the metasurface working mechanisms. Perfect transmission mainly depends on multipolar interference that can be used to control the transmission modes through the hybrid periods, hybrid cross sections, and multilayers. Perfect reflection is strongly influenced by the period of the metasurface and occurs only when the period is shorter than incident wavelength, which can be attributed to the lattice coupling. Furthermore, lattice coupling can be classified into two types with distinct properties: vertical mode and horizontal mode coupling. The vertical mode appears when the effective wavelength matches the feature size, whereas the horizontal mode only appears when the incident wavelength is close to the period. The horizontal mode is sensitive to the incident angle. The revealed functioning mechanisms enable further practical applications of metasurfaces.

Broadband plasmonic-enhanced forward and backward multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy is an attractive technique for label-free biochemical-specific characterization of biological specimens. However, it has very low sensitivity in monitoring and imaging molecules present in extremely low concentrations or at fast speeds. To improve this sensitivity, especially for multiplex CARS, the intensity of the pump beam and broadband Stokes beam should be enhanced simultaneously. Therefore, the gold shell particle and gold surface are demonstrated to enhance the forward and backward CARS, respectively. Results show that a signal enhancement factor of ∼25,000 can be achieved for the gold surface and an even higher enhancement factor can be achieved for the gold shell particles. Thus, we can obtain an enhanced CARS signal in a broad spectral range, which will substantially improve the detection sensitivity of hyperspectral CARS spectroscopy and imaging.

Single-Shot Multi-Frame Imaging of Femtosecond Laser-Induced Plasma Propagation

Single-shot ultrafast multi-frame imaging technology plays a crucial role in the observation of laser-induced plasma. However, there are many challenges in the application of laser processing, such as technology fusion and imaging stability. To provide a stable and reliable observation method, we propose an ultrafast single-shot multi-frame imaging technology based on wavelength polarization multiplexing. Through the frequency doubling and birefringence effects of the BBO and the quartz crystal, the 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse was frequency doubled to 400 nm, and a sequence of probe sub-pulses with dual-wavelength and different polarization was generated. The coaxial propagation and framing imaging of multi-frequency pulses provided stable imaging quality and clarity, as well as high temporal/spatial resolution (200 fs and 228 lp/mm). In the experiments involving femtosecond laser-induced plasma propagation, the probe sub-pulses measured their time intervals by capturing the same results. Specifically, the measured time intervals were 200 fs between the same color pulses and 1 ps between the adjacent different. Finally, based on the obtained system time resolution, we observed and revealed the evolution mechanism of femtosecond laser-induced air plasma filaments, the multifilament propagation of femtosecond laser in fused silica, and the influence mechanism of air ionization on laser-induced shock waves.

Controllable multi-scale hydrophobic structures on titanium alloy by polarization-dependent femtosecond laser fabrication and magnetron sputtering

A significant challenge is to develop effective and controllable processes for fabricating hydrophobic metal surfaces with high mechanical properties. The combination of femtosecond laser direct writing (LDW) and gold nanoparticle magnetron sputtering (Au-MS) has successfully produced multiscale structures on Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy, which possess excellent superhydrophobic and hardening properties. By adjusting the laser polarization to control micro/nanostructures, the dual-scale structure is transformed into a triple-scale structure, leading to a significant increase in the contact angle under proper scanning intervals. The Au-MS further fabricates a superhydrophobic surface, with a maximum contact angle of 153° and a minimum sliding angle of 4°. Surface hardness can be raised to 408 HV from 367 HV. This work reveals that the wetting mechanism for the dual-scale structures of TC4 alloy fabricated by laser direct writing is in the Cassie-Baxter state. While the triple-scale structures of Au-MS after linear polarization LDW (LPLDW) and the triple-scale structures of circular polarization LDW (CPLDW) with or without Au-MS are in Wenzel state, resulting in a different relationship between contact angle and surface structure. The flexible and high-efficiency fabrication of these multiscale structures has made TC4 alloy more competitive in self-cleaning and anti-freezing applications.

The 'trapped rainbow' mechanism of graded gratings has been demonstrated only as a type of groove reflection. In this study, we investigate the physical mechanism of the 'trapped rainbow' and demonstrate that a small step increase (~1/50λ) in the depth of a single obstructed groove can terminate the propagation of surface terahertz (THz) waves and reflect them back. A single obstructed groove can easily manipulate the properties of THz waves by changing the depth or the refractive index of the groove because the cutoff frequency is highly sensitive to the property of the groove. In addition, waves transmitted and reflected by a single groove can be controlled periodically over a period of a 1/2 − λ increase in depth owing to the interference of surface spoof plasmonics and Fabry–Perot resonance. This is an easy means of controlling surface THz waves and fabricating more compact integrated optical devices such as THz branch waveguides, band pass filters, reflectors, and splitters.
