Mixing of Excitons in Nanostructures Based on a Perylene Dye with CdTe Quantum Dots

Semiconductor quantum dots of the A2B6 group and organic semiconductors have been widely studied and applied in optoelectronics. This study aims to combine CdTe quantum dots and perylene-based dye molecules into advanced nanostructure system targeting to improve their functional properties. In such systems, new electronic states, a mixture of Wannier-Mott excitons with charge-transfer excitons, have appeared at the interface of CdTe quantum dots and the perylene dye. The nature of such new states has been analyzed by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy with picosecond time resolution. Furthermore, aggregation of perylene dye on the CdTe has been elucidated, and contribution of Förster resonant energy transfer has been observed between aggregated forms of the dye and CdTe quantum dots in the hybrid CdTe-perylene nanostructures. The studied nanostructures have strongly quenched emission of quantum dots enabling potential application of such systems in dissociative sensing.

Luminescence of Tetracene Crystals

Electron spectra of molecular crystals are quite sensitive to the structural changes of a lattice. It allowed to establish by spectrum that at cooling of tetracene crystals lower than 160K it was observed that phase transition of the first kind occurs [1-2]. It is assumed that at the phase transition, a weak triclinic lattice transits into a monoclinic one. Increased concentration of structural defects is observed in tetracene crystals subjected to the phase transition. These defects in tetracene lattice are the places of localization of singlet and triplet excitons and they make an essential influence on the energy transfer and luminescence spectra. We carried out investigations of luminescence by spectroscopy method with the time resolution that allowed at low tempered spectra to observe bands responsible for luminescence of free excitons and excitons localized on defects [3]. It has been determined that values of free excitons lifetime in tetracene crystals at 4,2K lies in the range from 1 to 2,5 nanoseconds.

Photoluminescence of melanin-based nanocomposites with fullerene derivative

This paper presents the study of the photoluminescent properties of molecular compositions consisting of melanin and an electron-acceptor material – fullerene derivative, [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). These molecular compositions have not been studied well and are promising for molecular electronics of natural materials, in particular, for organic solar cells. The novelty of this work relates to the study of photoluminescence spectra obtained for these molecular compositions and nanocomposites in various solvents (chloroform, acetonitrile, and toluene) as well as in a polystyrene matrix; these studies were carried out at various, in particular, liquid helium (4.2 K), temperatures. The obtained results allowed us to ascertain mechanisms of the state of aggregation and donor-acceptor interaction between melanin and PCBM.

Formation and Luminescent Properties of Al2O3:SiOC Nanocomposites on the Base of Alumina Nanoparticles Modified by Phenyltrimethoxysilane

Al2O3:SiOC nanocomposites were synthesized by thermal treatment of fumed alumina nanoparticles modified by phenyltrimethoxysilane. The effect of annealing temperature in inert ambient on structure and photoluminescence of modified alumina powder was studied by IR spectroscopy as well as photoluminescence spectroscopy with ultraviolet and X-ray excitation. It is demonstrated that increase of annealing temperature results in formation of silica precipitates on the surface of alumina particles that is accompanied by development and spectral evolution of visible photoluminescence. These observations are discussed in terms of structural transformation of the surface of Al2O3 particles.

Intermode scattering by light-induced gratings in CdS-single-crystal microlasers

A possible mechanism is proposed for efficient intermode scattering in semiconductor CdS single-crystal lasers. It is shown that coupling between the total-internal-reflection modes and the outgoing modes may be achieved as a result of self-diffraction scattering, i.e., diffraction by refractive index gratings induced by the waves themselves.
