Tuning acoustical facade designs aiming for a controlled influence on the urban soundscape

The representative high-rise facades of today's major cities are composing urban spaces out of glass and steel. With the reflection of one noise source on one hard reflective facade the noise level in an urban space can increase up to 3 dB. In the case of multiple reflections in a complex urban setting the level can increase up to 8 dB. Taking this effect into account, the surfaces of inner city facades have to be redesigned aiming for absorption of the sound energy. Due to the different functions of a facade, e.g. vista, light, energy and air, the complete covering of a facade in order to gain broadband absorption is not feasible. If the targeted broadband absorption is not feasible, the absorption effect can be tuned to several frequency bands in order to transform the uncomfortable noise perception into a comfortable one. During this research facade designs were developed with a focus on the acoustical effectiveness. It was demonstrated, that with a tunable acoustical facade construction, more than one frequency band can be influenced, thus achieving a comfort soundscape in an urban space.

Smart and Multifunctional Materials and their possible application in façade systems

Today’s society needs to face challenging targets relating to environment and energy efficiency, and therefore the development of efficient facade systems is essential. Innovative concepts such as Adaptive Building Facades might play a role in the near future, as their dynamic behaviour could optimise the performance of a building. For their successful development, a balance between sophistication and benefit is necessary and the implementation of Smart and Multifunctional Materials in building envelopes could be the key, as they have the ability to repeatedly and reversibly change some of their functions, features, or behaviours over time in response to environmental conditions. However, these materials were predominantly developed for use in other fields, and there is a lack of specific technical information to evaluate their usefulness in facade engineering. The aim of this paper is to collect the critical information about promising responsive materials for use in the design of Adaptive Facades, in order to help designers and technicians in decision-making processes and to scope possible future applications in facades. Investigated materials were analysed from the Building Science standpoint; their weaknesses and threats in the built environment were highlighted, and their technical feasibility was examined through the study of their availability in the current market.

Barriers for façade integration of solar technologies

Solar energy has been actively promoted as a clean energy source for a long time; however, solar technologies have not been widely used in the built environment, mostly limiting their operation to industrial and macroscale applications. Along with commercially available products such as building integrated PV panels (BIPV) or building integrated solar thermal collectors (BIST); novel solar cooling integrated facades are seen as interesting alternatives for the development of new active façade components for high-performing commercial buildings. Nevertheless, there are barriers to overcome to push for widespread application of architecturally integrated solar façades. This chapter identifies perceived barriers for widespread façade integration of solar technologies, to explore the current scenario and generate guidelines for future developments. To achieve this, the chapter discusses the results of the second part of the survey presented in the previous chapter, which addresses the perceived potential and specific issues for the integration of solar technologies. General results point to economic aspects as the main barrier to overcome, followed by particular issues related to current limitations of components and architectural products. In this aspect, most mentions point to performance, aesthetics and technical complexity of current systems as issues to improve in order to promote the development of solar integrated architectural products.

Multi-material additive manufacturing in architecture and construction: A review

Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing (MMAM) is an emerging manufacturing approach that is gaining interest in architecture and construction as an expansion of Additive Manufacturing. Hereby, different materials or material properties are combined in a single additive process in order to create objects that are composed of multiple materials. Ultimately, this approach introduces a new way of manufacturing and building, where assembly is no longer a necessity in order to combine multiple materials. Moreover, different potentials can be derived from the use of MMAM. Leading towards components with heterogeneous material composition and a high degree of adaption towards structural, environmental, and design criteria. This work provides an overview of the current state of MMAM in architecture and construction. Different processes and materials which have been reported are discussed and potentials, which emerge through the use of MMAM are described using specific use-cases.

The Future Envelope

Research in the field of façade technology has to be orientated on the current topics energy, ecology and efficiency as key items for demands on the design. Existing façade technology, after 60 years of curtain walls and 30 years of element façades, lacks new impulses and strategies for ground breaking developments. As a result, the “Façade Research Group” at the Faculty of Architecture / TU Delft has been developed and established with a focus on problem-orientated research solutions, experimental projects, planning tools, possibilities of technology transfer and future and innovative developments.

The impact of climate design on architecture is obvious. But design trends are currently attempting to implement climate design merely as an additional item in architectonic planning. The alternative is to start with an architectural attitude that will produce a comprehensively integrated design. To achieve this, design teams will have to accept an equality of importance, as well as understanding the demands of all relevant themes. This Imagine book is related to a series of lectures at the TU Delft and a workshop in which international professionals and students from various disciplines participated with the intention of creating an ambience deliberately oriented towards generating an integrated, performance-driven envelope.
