Infused self‐assembly on Langmuir–Blodgett Film: Fabrication of highly efficient SERS active substrates with controlled plasmonic aggregates

Abstract A facile procedure towards the fabrication of highly reproducible, large area surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates through integration of Langmuir–Blodgett and self‐assembly technique has been reported. The plasmonic architectures of the substrates can be tuned at will to control the hot spots and hence the overall enhancements of SERS signal. The as‐prepared substrates of classes “A” and “B” incubated in gold nanocolloids show their respective efficacies as efficient SERS sensing scaffolds for detecting 4‐MPy molecule at ultrasensitive concentrations. Moreover, these substrates are unique in their kinds, where explicit or concomitant presence of protonated and deprotonated forms of 4‐MPy can be detected at trace concentrations. The substrates also exhibit remarkable spectral reproducibility and show early promise to overcome the “SERS uncertainty principle”. To our knowledge, this genre of SERS active substrates with facile control over plasmonics, is the first report of its kind and are expected to provide new direction towards successful fabrication of the next generation SERS sensing platforms.

Quantum chemical calculations have been carried out to explore structural and spectroscopic properties of some derivatives of N-iso-butyl, S-2-nitro-1-phenylethyl dithiocarbamate molecule in neutral and cationic forms. Electron-releasing groups (Me, OH and OMe) are considered to explore their effect on geometrical parameters, vibrational spectra and electronic properties of N-iso-butyl, S-2-nitro-1-phenylethyl dithiocarbamate. All the computations were performed at DFT/B3LYP level of Gaussian09 suite. The Raman spectra at different laser exciting frequencies are presented. The potential energy distributions of the considered derivatives were calculated by using the normal coordinate analysis method. The NBO calculations were performed to study the donor-acceptor interactions, HOMO-LUMO, electronic structure and hyper-conjugative interaction energies. The vibrational contribution of various thermodynamical parameters, viz, entropy, specific heat and free energy have also been presented and discussed in detail. Moreover, we have also explored the effect of temperature at specific heat and partition function of these molecules. Molecular docking studies have been performed to understand the nature of the interactions and the probable binding sites of NSD, NSD-Me, NSD-OH and NSD-OMe molecules in the active pockets of the 2KCE receptor.

Melamine and citrazinic acid, upon solid-state grinding, produced a two-component gelator which selectively gelates water or a mixed-solvent system having water as one of the solvents. The dried hydrogel was porous and shows adsorption and storage of molecular iodine.

Understanding the Enhancement Mechanisms in the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectra of the 1,10-Phenanthroline Molecule Adsorbed on a Au@Ag Bimetallic Nanocolloid

Adsorption of 1,10-phenanthroline (PHEN) on the Aucore–Agshell (Au@Ag) bimetallic nanocolloid surface has been investigated. Bimetallic nanocolloids have been synthesized using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in alkaline solution. Nanocolloids of different Aucore:Agshell ratio were synthesized keeping the same Aucore size. Again, for the preparation, the total metal concentrations were always kept constant. The structure and composition of the bimetallic particles were characterized by UV–vis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Detailed normal Raman (NRS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectra (SERS) of PHEN in aqueous solution have been studied. The relative contributions of the electromagnetic (EM) and charge-transfer (CT) mechanism to the overall enhancement of the SERS bands of the PHEN molecule have been estimated. PHEN molecules are adsorbed on the Agshell surface through both the nitrogen atoms with the molecular plane almost perpendicular to the surface, which has been confirmed from Ag–N stretching vibration. The three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method has been applied to simulate the local electric field on the spherical Au@Ag nanocolloid for various core/shell ratios. Comparative spectral information revealed the highest SERS effect from the 1:4 Aucore–Agshell bimetallic nanocolloid of 29 nm size. This observation has also been supported by theory. Thus, experiment and theory keep abreast the attachment of PHEN molecules on a new substrate from SERS studies.
