Study on the disastrous impact of the flood on pavement of North Bihar, India

Floods are one of the most extreme events that affect human life in different regions worldwide. In India, North Bihar is one of the regions affected by floods every year during the monsoon season. Every year, floods cause the loss of human and cattle lives. It has also become the reason for enormous economic loss. Damage to infrastructure is a significant cause of such economic loss. Every year, transportation infrastructure gets inundated due to damage to the pavement during severe flood conditions. Many researchers have investigated the impact of floods on pavement structures. They have reported the different factors significantly influencing the pavement during flood conditions. Different forms of pavement failure take place due to this. Pavement deterioration models were developed to predict pavement damage. None of the deterioration models are suitable for all regions. The suitability of deterioration models depends upon conditions in the selected region. In this study, the impact of floods on the pavement in North Bihar is investigated. The different forms of pavement failure were identified and their extent was analyzed. Also, a mathematical model was developed to predict different forms of failure due to floods in North Bihar. It was observed that the height of flood has significant impact on the different parameters considered in this study.

Bihar is the third largest Indian state population-wise and the twelfth largest state area-wise with 96% of its area being a plain terrain. The Ganga river divides the state into two regions, namely North Bihar and South Bihar. The northern regions have Himalayan tributaries of the river Ganga and large flood plains. This chapter deals with the various types of soils and rocks available in the state of Bihar, utilisation of soil and rock as construction materials and vulnerability of natural hazards and effects due to environmental conditions. The northern region of the state is mostly a plain terrain having silty soil in the upper layers, but at some instances, the silt content has also been observed in the lower layers. In the south of the Ganga river, clayey soil has been observed in the upper strata. The most common soils in Bihar are Gangetic alluvium of the Indo-Gangetic plain region, Piedmont Swamp soil which is found in the north-western part of the West Champaran district and Terai soil which is found in the eastern part of Bihar along the border of Nepal. The northern region of Bihar has been observed to have high risks of natural hazards, namely earthquakes and floods. One of the districts, Gaya, has been observed to have major pollution of soils due to the growing use of fertilisers. The details about the natural resources, natural hazards occurring in the state and environmental concerns on soil and rocks are also included in the chapter.

Automation of Residential Water Flowmeter

Today, in big cities people are suffering from scarcity of water. Judicious ways of using the present day resources can only be the pathway of a golden future with sustainable development. Inefficient ways of using water can introduce the world to the problem of water crisis. A well-automated water flowmeter with proper billing system can be an important alternative for water management. This paper describes about the automation of mechanical water flow meter, which ranges from 4 liters/min to 40 liters/min. It also describes about the accuracy of existing water meters and IOT has been applied for the process of its automation. A mechanical water flowmeter has a turbine, which rotates when the water flows through it. The turbine generates a magnetic pulse, which depends on the rate of flow of water. The other components that are required to carry the analog data to the micro controller is Hall Effect sensor. The micro controller uploaded with proper programming helps to determine the water flow. The calculated data is transferred to the cloud in real time. One can access the data by the help of the application.

Compaction and Strength Behavior of Tire Crumbles–Fly Ash Mixed with Clay

Use of admixtures to improve the engineering behavior of soil is a popular ground improvement technique. Fly ash and tire crumbles are industrial wastes that can be used for the improvement of the engineering behavior of soil. In the present study the compaction and strength behaviors of kaoline clay mixed with tire waste and fly ash alone and in combined forms are studied. To evaluate the compaction behavior, a modified Proctor test was used, and for strength behavior, California bearing ratio (CBR) tests were conducted. Test results have shown that with the inclusion of fly ash and tire crumbles maximum dry density decreases and optimum moisture content increases. In cases in which fly ash and tire crumbles were used alone, a maximum of five-fold and three-fold improvement over CBR values were observed, respectively. But when both fly ash and tire crumbles were used together as admixtures, a 10-fold improvement over the CBR value of clay was observed.

Study on the interference of pier on the channel bed

Scoring and sedimentation are two continuous processes which take place in river bed. These two phenomena have significant impact over the overall behavior of river. Scoring and sedimentation process get affected due the construction of structures like Bridges. Piers of bridge alter the natural flow of rivers. Due to this scouring process increases near to the pier. The scouring process gets affected due to the other activities like sand mining or filling. Also any obstruction like some construction can also affect the scouring. In this study laboratory tests were conducted to understand the nature of scouring near to the pier. For this purpose, model test were conducted in a straight channel with a model concrete pier. The impact of the obstruction in flow, mining of sand and filling of the sand is investigated through this investigation. The finding of this study can be utilized in understanding and development of techniques of controlling scouring near the pier

Spatial variation in water quality of the Burhi Gandak River: a multi-location assessment

The Burhi Gandak River, a significant tributary of the Ganga River and a vital water source in Bihar, India, is facing critical water quality degradation due to rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrial activities. This study conducts a detailed water quality assessment of the river, focusing on the effects of these anthropogenic factors across different locations, seasons, and industrial zones. Water samples were collected and analyzed for key parameters, including pH, total dissolved solids (TDSs), total hardness (TH), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and dissolved oxygen (DO). The results indicate significant spatial and temporal variations, with water quality deteriorating notably in areas like Samastipur and Khagaria, where industrial and urban activities are more concentrated. For instance, BOD levels increased from 7.5 mg/L to 9.5 mg/l as the river flows through urban Samastipur, signaling a decline in water quality. Additionally, sugar mills located along the river contribute to higher pollution levels during operational months, especially in Lauria and Sugauli. Seasonal analysis shows that the lean season experiences the highest levels of degradation, while monsoon floods increase suspended solids due to sediment inflow. These findings emphasize the urgent need for improved regulation of industrial discharge and urban waste management to protect the water quality of the Burhi Gandak River and the livelihoods dependent on it.
