Energy-Efficient Online Service Migration in Edge Networks

Empowered by edge computing, resources and computation capabilities provided by edge devices can be encapsulated as containerized services, and domain applications can be achieved through service compositions. When burst requests are coming to be satisfied, there may exist edge devices which are overloaded, since requests are mostly spatially and temporally constrained, and edge devices are resource-scarceness and capacity-limited. In this setting, overloaded devices should be relieved through optimally migrating one or more activated services to contiguous edge devices. Besides, sensory data gathered by original edge devices should be periodically transmitted to migrated devices for data analysis purpose. To mitigate this issue, this paper proposes an Energy-efficient Online Service Migration (EOSM) mechanism to conduct the migration of multiple services simultaneously. Specifically, a light service sharing strategy is developed to only transmit the top container layer, and a modified NSGA-II algorithm is adopted to generate one or multiple paths for the container layer and time-series sensory data migration of each migrated service. Extensive experimental results show that our EOSM strategy outperforms the state of arts techniques in mitigating overloading devices in terms of access latency, energy consumption, and request success rate.

Energy-Efficient Anomaly Detection With Primary and Secondary Attributes in Edge-Cloud Collaboration Networks

An energy-efficient anomaly detection is fundamental to maintain a healthy status of domain applications in edge-cloud collaboration networks. Generally, various kinds of multimodal sensory data capture heterogeneous attributes, where a certain attribute, called the primary one, may be more significant in detecting certain anomaly. This observation drives us to propose a novel energy-efficient anomaly detection mechanism, where attributes sensed by multimodal smart things (msts) are categorized as primary and secondary ones according to their relevance with the characteristic of this anomaly. This technique includes two steps: 1) an initial anomaly detection in single edge networks. Edge nodes associated with the primary attribute adopt a lightweight object detection model to initially detect the potential occurrence of this anomaly. Certain edge networks are determined where an anomaly is suspected and 2) an anomaly refinement with multimodal and multiattribute smart things in marginal edge networks. The cloud identifies and issues a specific query request to gather anomaly-aware sensory data from smart things with secondary attributes, for refining the detection accuracy of this anomaly, where an adaptive weighted fusion model is developed to analyze sensory data coupling of msts. The experimental results show that this technique performs better than the state of the art on the reduction of energy consumption and query time.

Crossing Scientific Workflow Fragments Discovery Through Activity Abstraction in Smart Campus

Considering the knowledge-intensity and error-prone of developing scientific workflows from scratch, reusing and repurposing current workflows are the effective and efficient solution to support scientists for conducting novel experiments, and this strategy is deemed as important to achieve the objective of smart campus. An experiment may be relevant with one or multiple scientific workflows. This observation drives us to propose a technique that can discover and recommend cross-workflow fragments with respect to the requirement of novel experiments. Specifically, the functionally similar activities are clustered through adopting a modularity-based community discovery clustering technique, and they are represented as abstract activities. An abstract activity network model is constructed accordingly to reflect the invocation relations among abstract activities. Structural and semantic similar workflow fragments are discovered from the abstract activity network through the sub-graph matching algorithm. These fragments are instantiated through replacing abstract activities by appropriate activities in certain activity clusters. These instantiated workflow fragments are ranked and recommended for their reuse and repurposing purpose. Experimental evaluation results demonstrate that our technique is accurate and efficient on discovering and recommending appropriate cross-workflow fragments.

Energy-Efficient Boundary Detection for Continuous Objects in Collaborative Edge Networks

Along with a large and increasing number of resource-constrained and battery-powered smart things being deployed in networks, an energy-efficient mechanism for continuous object boundary detection is fundamental for prolonging the network lifetime. Most of the existing studies focus on how to improve the boundary accuracy of continuous objects while ignoring the energy consumption of smart things in edge networks, which may lead to some smart things being in an unusable state. To address this issue, we propose an Energy-efficient Continuous object boundary Detection Mechanism, namely ECDM. This mechanism consists of two stages: (i) an edge-collaboration monitoring mechanism, where only sensory data relevant to toxic gas are transmitted among multi-edge networks, thus minimizing the number of exchanged sensory data involved in the detection, and reducing the transmission energy consumption of smart things; and (ii) a gas diffusion model is used to predict the diffusion of toxic gases, such that suspicious edge networks can be located quickly and efficiently, further reducing the energy consumption of smart things transmitting anomalous sensory data. Experimental results show that the energy consumption of ECDM is reduced by 34.5% compared to the latest boundary detection method that introduces a gas diffusion model while maintaining detection accuracy.

Energy-Efficient Composition of Configurable Internet of Things Services

Along with the adaptation of Internet of Things (IoT) to support various industrial applications, the cooperation and coordination of smart things is a promising strategy for satisfying requirements that are beyond the capacity of any single smart thing. To address this challenge, a two-tier IoT service framework is proposed, where the functionalities provided by smart things are encapsulated into IoT services, which are categorized into service classes. The service network is constructed by considering the invocation possibility between service classes, and service class chains are generated using traditional Web service composition techniques, where the functional specification of certain requirements is considered. Considering factors, such as spatial and temporal-constraints, energy efficiency, and the configurability of IoT services, selecting IoT services for the instantiation of service classes contained in chains is reduced to a multiobjective and multiconstrained optimization problem. Heuristic algorithms, such as the genetic algorithm (GA), ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), are adopted to search for optimal IoT service compositions. An experimental evaluation shows that PSO performs better than the GA and ACO in searching for approximately optimal IoT service compositions and reduces the energy consumption, thus prolonging the network lifetime.

Paleogeographical and Paleoenvironmental studies across the Ordovician–Silurian transition in the Yangtze region are based on the GBDB database and isopach maps. Sedimentary processes during the Late Ordovician to early Silurian of the Yangtze Platform are reviewed. Microfacies analyses on the shale gas drill cores in Weiyuan and Luzhou are provided as additional data.

Analysis of ultra-wide band rod dielectric antenna in time-domain

Ultra-wide band (UWB) technology is widely used in many fields such as communication and radar. Time-domain antenna is important for UWB technology. This paper analyzes the feasibility of the use of rod dielectric antenna in time-domain and presents how to choose the design parameters. The affection of antenna parameters, such as diameter, stimulation and taper, on propagation and radiation characteristics are analyzed by using the FDTD method. The results demonstrate that rod dielectric antenna can be used for time-domain antenna.

Depositional Structures and Their Reservoir Characteristics in the Wufeng–Longmaxi Shale in Southern Sichuan Basin, China

This paper documents depositional structures and their reservoir characteristics in the Wufeng–Longmaxi shale from outcrops and cores using thin sections, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, carbon–sulfur analyzer, helium porosimeter, decay permeameter, and focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM). In the study area, clayey and silty laminae abound in the shale. Clayey laminae are rich in bedding parallel fractures, microfractures, and organic pore networks. Silty laminae are rich in isolated inorganic pores and limited amounts of bedding non-parallel fractures. Various inter-lamination of clayey and silty laminae form five depositional structure types which are closely related to the ancient hydrodynamics, paleoredox condition, and sedimentation rate and have significant impacts on shale fractures, microfractures, pore types, pore-size distribution, and porosity. For the paper lamination (PL) and grading lamination composed of siltstone and claystone (GL-SC), organic pores account for 71.6% and 61.4% of the total, and dense bedding parallel and non-parallel fractures intersect to form connective networks. In the interlaminated lamination composed of siltstone and claystone (IL), grading lamination composed of claystone (GL-C) and structureless beds (SB), organic pores merely account for 20% to 51.8% of the total and minor isolated bedding parallel fractures occur. Among five depositional structure types, the PL and GL-SC have the highest porosity, permeability, TOC content, siliceous content, organic pore proportions, and ratios of horizontal to vertical permeability, which help them become shale gas exploration and development targets.
