Alginate-Based Drug Delivery Systems for Respiratory Disease

Alginate obtained from brown seaweeds has numerous biomedical applications. It is an excellent excipient in drug delivery systems, serving as a stability agent in different types of pharmaceutical formulations. Alginates have significant applications in nanomedicines, such as dendrimers, nanocrystals, emulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, micelles, and polymeric nanoparticles, and have more advantages in comparison to conventional medications in terms of efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic property, and physicochemical properties. Polymer-based drug delivery approaches have gained lot of interest in past decade. Newer techniques and innovations have given us opportunity to utilize natural biopolymers for various life-threatening diseases. Respiratory diseases being one of the leading causes of death in recent years which include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, and lung cancer that results in decline in lung function. Recent advances in nanotechnology have shed new light on the current treatment of chronic airway disease. This chapter is focused on the management of respiratory disease with more emphasis on the recent advances in nanotechnology-based therapeutics utilizing alginate polymers.

Comparative effect of Yogasana and pranayama on depression, anxiety and stress levels in adults practitioners

Background: Yoga is very ancient and globally accepted practice. Raja yoga has eight limbs with aasan, pranayama and dhyan. Practice of yoga gives various physical and mental health benefits (Sengupta P.2012). However, the effect of yogasan and pranayama practices separately on mental health problems need to be explored. Aim & Objective: Therefore, the aim of the study is to investigate comparative effect of yogasana and pranayama on mental status of adult practitioners. Method: Investigations were conducted in MDNIY with 181 Yogasan and Pranayama Certificate course participants (18-50 years, Male: 74, Female: 107). After collecting the socio-demographic data, psychological (Depression, Anxiety and stress) parameters were estimated using a Depression Anxiety Stress (DASS) (Lovi bond and Lovi bond (1995)) self-report questionnaire before and after the 3 months yoga and pranayama practices (Pre- post). Result: Data analyses suggest that Yogasana practitioners significantly reduce their stress score, anxiety score and depression score. Pranayama practitioners showed significant reduction in their stress score. Practitioners of both Yogasana and pranayama showed non-significant reduction in their scores. Conclusion: Yogasana is comparatively more effective than pranayama to keep mental health.

Concepts and Misperception of School Teachers regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioural disorder that affects a small percentage of school going children. Children with this kind of disorder are hyperactive and may understand what is expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still or pay attention to details. Ultimately, this impairs child's academic and social abilities. A school going child pays much of his/her working time in school; therefore, school teachers are expected to know about ADHD. The objectiveof research is to study the general concept and misperception of school teachers of Hapur city, Uttar Pradesh. The tool used for analysis is knowledge of attention deficit disorders scale (KADDS) along with other statistical tools. After analysis, it is found that the overall knowledge of ADHD of school teachers is low. The result also shows that the teachers have notrainingin ADHD and the management of this disorder in the classroom. This is a matter of concern as teachers play a crucial role in the recognition and treatment of ADHD.

Soil Potassium Sensor Using a Valinomycin-Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO-v)-Based Field-Effect Transistor for Precision Farming

A precise measurement of soil potassium (K) concentration is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable land management. The efficiency of real-time soil quality monitoring is hampered by the time-consuming laboratory analysis that is commonly associated with conventional methods. The present research introduces an innovative approach utilizing a field-effect transistor (FET) structure coated with reduced graphene oxide-decorated valinomycin (rGO-v) for the detection of potassium ions in soil samples. The sensor exploits the distinctive electrical properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and the specific affinity of valinomycin for potassium ions. To construct the device, we applied rGO-v onto an FET substrate. The conductance of the FET can be modified by the interaction between valinomycin and potassium ions, enabling the detection of potassium ions. Some of the advantages of this technology are its high sensitivity, fast response time, and potential for miniaturization. In addition, the device is tuned to demonstrate an enhanced sensitivity of 0.98 μA/(kg/ha) below the threshold voltage. The sensor exhibits a response time of 40 s and demonstrates exceptional stability in the face of unfavorable conditions, specifically humidity. Therefore, valinomycin-decorated reduced graphene oxide, when subjected to appropriate gate bias, demonstrates promising results as a versatile, cost-effective, and easy-to-use potassium ion sensor.
