It is essential to understand the hurdles, motivation, and other issues affecting scientists' active participation in science communication to bridge the gap between science and society. This study analyzed 1115 responses of Japanese scientists regarding their attitudes toward science communication through a questionnaire focusing on the field of stem cell and regenerative medicine. As a result, we found that scientists face systemic issues such as lack of funding, time, opportunities, and evaluation systems for science communication. At the same time, there is a disparity of attitudes toward media discourse between scientists and the public.
The effect of water and saliva contamination on the bond strength of metal orthodontic brackets cemented to etched (10% polyacrylic acid) and unetched human premolar enamel was investigated. Two bonding agents were used: one commercially available product (LC) and one experimental (EX) light-cured glass ionomer. Shear bond strength was measured after aging for 5 minutes, 15 minutes, and 24 hours. The results were compared by ANOVA and Scheffe's tests at p = 0.05. For LC, the bond strength of brackets bonded to etched enamel, with and without contamination, was statistically higher than that of brackets bonded to unetched enamel for all aging times. An exception was the bond strength to unetched enamel with saliva contamination after 24 hours; for EX, this value was statistically higher than that measured on unetched enamel with water contamination. Contamination by saliva did not reduce bond strength to unetched enamel. For both etched and unetched enamel, there was no significant difference between LC and EX after 24 hours for all contamination conditions.
Abstract Background The nutritional status can potentially affect the efficacy of cancer therapy. We evaluated the relationships between the nutritional status and the efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), calculated from body weight and serum albumin, was retrospectively evaluated in 148 patients with NSCLC who received first-line platinum-based chemotherapy and scored as low or high. Results Patients with a high GNRI had a significantly higher overall response rate (ORR; 61.8% [95% confidence interval {CI} = 52.5–70.3%] vs. 34.2% [95% CI = 21.2–50.1%, p < 0.004), longer median progression-free survival (PFS; 6.3 months [95% CI = 5.6–7.2 months] vs. 3.8 months [95% CI = 2.5–4.7 months], p < 0.001), and longer median overall survival (OS; 22.8 months [95% CI = 16.7–27.2 months] vs. 8.5 months [95% CI = 5.4–16.0 months], p < 0.001) than those with low GNRI. High GNRI was independently predictive of longer PFS and OS, but not ORR, in multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses. In 71 patients who received second-line non-platinum chemotherapy, patients with high GNRI exhibited significantly longer PFS and OS than those with low GNRI (both p < 0.001). Conclusions GNRI was predictive of prolonged survival in patients with NSCLC who received first-line platinum-based chemotherapy and second-line non-platinum chemotherapy. Assessment of the nutritional status may be useful for predicting the efficacy of chemotherapy.
