Oligo- and Polyfluorene-Tetheredfac-Ir(ppy)₃: Substitution Effects

A set of conjugated oligo- and polyfluorene-tethered fac-Ir(ppy)3 complexes were synthesized. In addition to steady-state absorption and emission, time-resolved emission spectroscopy was used to systematically study the correlation of photophysical properties with chemical structures. A chain length dependency study showed that both radiative and nonradiative triplet decay rates, as well as the phosphorescence quantum yield, decreased with increasing chain length of the appended oligofluorene. Notably, the complex with oligofluorene tethered to the pyridine para to phenyl ring possessed a substantially higher phosphorescence quantum efficiency and shorter lifetime than those of an isomeric complex with the oligofluorene linked to the phenyl ring para to pyridine. Nonetheless, both these two oligomer complexes exhibited an excited state of mixed MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) and LC (ligand-centered) transitions, whereas another isomeric complex having an oligofluorene appended to the phenyl ring para to the iridium ion exhibited a particularly long triplet lifetime (>100 μs), indicative of a 3LC excited state. A moderately high quantum yield (∼0.5) was displayed by this 3LC-featured phosphor. DFT calculations substantiated the proposition that the attachment of oligofluorene to Ir(ppy)3 at different positions resulted in varied molecular orbitals, with different relative contribution of MLCT to the emissive excited state. Hence, photophysical properties such as radiative decay rate, lifetime, and quantum yield, etc., were all influenced by the substitution isomerism. As these results indicated that if short lifetime and fast radiative decay were desired, among different substitution patterns appending the conjugated chain to the pyridine unit was the most favorable. Thus, star-shaped complexes with an oligo- or polyfluorene tethered to each of the three pyridine units of Ir(ppy)3 were prepared. In such a structure, the tris-cyclometalated iridium effected nearly complete intersystem crossing (ISC) in all three ligands across three fluorene units, without compromising the phosphorescence quantum yield. But the study showed that further extending the conjugated ligand resulted in partial ISC or even complete loss of capacity for ISC beyond a certain distance.

Solution Self‐Assembly of Giant Surfactants: An Exploration on Molecular Architectures

Giant surfactants are size-amplified counterparts of small-molecule surfactants with one (or more) molecular nanoparticle(s) (MNPs) as head(s). The tail components include but are not limited to polymer chains. The combination of the MNP heads having diverse symmetries and surface functionalities with the tails possessing variable compositions and architectures generates an enormously large family of giant surfactants. The recent progresses on their solution self-assembly behaviors are briefly summarized in this chapter. In general, this class of materials could self-organize into a great variety of ordered supramolecular structures in solution. While the self-assembly shares many general principles of small molecule surfactants and block copolymers, these giant surfactants possess their own unique phase behaviors and structural characteristics, which has been found to be sensitive to their primary chemical structures and molecular topologies. The exploration of the universal principles that govern their self-assemblies will provide guidance to the rational design and manipulation of new functional materials for technologically relevant applications.

A Tumor‐on‐a‐Chip System with Bioprinted Blood and Lymphatic Vessel Pair

Abstract Current in vitro antitumor drug screening strategies insufficiently mimic biological systems. They tend to lack true perfusion and draining microcirculation systems, which may post significant limitations in explicitly reproducing the transport kinetics of cancer therapeutics. Herein, the fabrication of an improved tumor model consisting of a bioprinted hollow blood vessel and a lymphatic vessel pair, hosted in a 3D tumor microenvironment‐mimetic hydrogel matrix is reported, termed as the tumor‐on‐a‐chip with a bioprinted blood and a lymphatic vessel pair (TOC‐BBL). The bioprinted blood vessel is a perfusable channel with an opening on both ends, while the bioprinted lymphatic vessel is blinded on one end, both of which are embedded in a hydrogel tumor mass, with vessel permeability individually tunable through optimization of the compositions of the bioinks. It is demonstrated that systems with different combinations of these bioprinted blood/lymphatic vessels exhibit varying levels of diffusion profiles for biomolecules and anticancer drugs. The results suggest that this unique in vitro tumor model containing the bioprinted blood/lymphatic vessel pair may have the capacity of simulating the complex transport mechanisms of certain pharmaceutical compounds inside the tumor microenvironment, potentially providing improved accuracy in future cancer drug screening.

Ionic Thermoelectric Materials Based on the Thermodiffusion Effect: Mechanism, Advancements, and Applications

Abstract The relentless increase in global energy consumption, coupled with the detrimental effects of over‐reliance on non‐renewable fossil fuels, has necessitated a paradigm shift in the energy industry towards sustainable energy sources. Thermoelectric materials have emerged as a promising avenue for harnessing waste heat, offering a viable solution to the dual challenges of energy scarcity and environmental pollution. Compared with traditional electronic thermoelectric materials, ionic thermoelectric (i‐TE) materials have received increasing attention. This review provides an overview of the recent advancements in i‐TE materials based on the thermodiffusion effect, including an in‐depth analysis of the fundamental principle, material design, and potential applications. The significance of material selection is highlighted, with types of i‐TE materials ranging from liquid to quasi‐solid and solid states, each presenting unique advantages and challenges. The innovative microstructural engineering and regulating interactions are identified as key strategies to enhance the thermoelectric performance of i‐TE materials. Furthermore, the applications in capacitors and generators and sensing devices are summarized, demonstrating their potentials in varieties of scenarios. Encouraged by the recent rapid progresses, it is believed that the ionic i‐TE materials and related technology are expected to generate practical impacts in the future solutions for sustainable energy.

Facile Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Sphere–Square Shape Amphiphiles Based on Porphyrin–[60]Fullerene Conjugates

Abstract Molecules constructed from a combination of zero‐dimensional ([60]fullerene (C 60 )) and two‐dimensional (porphyrin (Por)) nanobuilding blocks represent an intriguing category of sphere–square “shape amphiphiles”. These sphere–square shape amphiphiles possess interesting optoelectronic properties. To efficiently synthesize a large variety of C 60 –Por shape amphiphiles, a facile route based on Steglich esterification was developed. The synthetic strategy enables the preparation of hydroxy‐functionalized Por precursors ( 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ) with high purity in a one‐pot procedure. All of the C 60 –Por shape amphiphiles ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ) can be readily synthesized in good yields through subsequent Steglich esterification with a highly soluble carboxylic acid derivative of methanofullerene ( 13 ). Photophysical studies indicated weak electronic coupling between the C 60 and Por moieties and suggest an edge‐to‐face alignment for the moieties. The fluorescence of electronically excited Por portions of each amphiphile was efficiently quenched, which was indicative of electron transfer from 1 Por to the C 60 group(s). Increasing the number of C 60 groups on the shape amphiphiles led to more pronounced quenching of the Por fluorescence, which indicated the potential for more effective generation of charge‐separated species, C 60 −. Por +. , from the photoexcited C 60 –Por shape amphiphiles.

Sequential “Click” Approach to Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Based Shape Amphiphiles

This paper reports a highly efficient and modular sequential "click" approach for the syntheses of shape amphiphiles based on polymer-tethered polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). This approach combines both "grafting-to" and "post-functionalization" strategies. It involves the copper-catalyzed Huisgen [3 + 2] cycloaddition (CuAAC) for POSS–polymer ligation and subsequent thiol–ene addition reaction for POSS cage functionalization. Starting from a readily available POSS precursor bearing one alkyne and seven vinyl groups (VPOSS–alkyne), the CuAAC reaction is effective in ensuring the stoichiometric bonding between POSS and azide-functionalized polymers, with no need for fractionation in the purification process. The modularity was demonstrated in two representative polymer systems, hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), by the synthesis of VPOSS–PS and VPOSS–PEO. The thiol–ene reaction was subsequently applied to convert all the vinyl groups on the POSS cage quantitatively into various functional groups, including carboxylic acids, hydroxyls, and alkyls, thereby introducing amphiphilicity to drive self-assembly. Such shape amphiphiles are novel model systems for the study of their self-assembly behaviors, hierarchal structure formation, and functional properties in both the solution and bulk states. Aiming to fulfill the "click" philosophy, the sequential "click" approach described here is robust and efficient for rapid construction of functional shape amphiphiles with complex structures and diverse molecular architectures.
