Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are promising photovoltaic technology with diverse indoor and outdoor applications. DSSCs can be integrated with curtains and glasses to power various devices, including wireless sensors, computer network peripherals, internet-of-things (IoT) devices, and wearable electronics. DSSCs have the potential to become the future source of energy. However, their efficiency, stability, and industrial production still need to be scaled up. The present review encompasses these elements and the various changes that have occurred inside the DSSC over the last few years, including device structure, TiO 2 photoelectrode, novel electrolytes, new organic photosensitizers, efficient catalyst materials, and encapsulation strategies for sealing DSSC devices. We further discuss how the performance of each functional component of a DSSC has been enhanced as a result of the introduction of novel materials and manufacturing processes. In addition, we also briefly cover p-DSSCs and tandem DSSCs. Finally, the prospect of highly efficient and stable DSSCs is highlighted.

Efficiency of Solar Cells Based on Natural Dyes with Plasmonic Nanoparticle-Based Photo Anode

Cheap and efficient dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) can be prepared using natural dyes responding in the visible region of solar spectrum. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) plays a very important role for the improvement in the efficiency of DSSCs by using Plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) for exploiting the visible portion of the solar radiation by transferring the energy from dye to PNP. This energy transfers from dye to semiconductor TiO 2 through PNP which increases the overall photo catalytic activity. In the present study, Al-doped TiO 2 photoanodes were prepared via sol–gel route and used for DSSC application. Various natural and synthetic dyes are prepared and the optical transmittance and absorbance of the dyes are measured in the wavelength range of 250–850[Formula: see text]nm using UV-Vis spectroscopy and they are used in DSSC. Natural dyes extracted from fruits and synthetic dye based on Ruthenium (Ru) metal complex is used as sensitizers. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells utilizing different dyes is compared. Out of the various natural dyes, beetroot and strawberry extracts based dyes show good absorbance in the visible range of electromagnetic spectrum. On the other hand, synthetic dyes based on Ru complex show strong absorbance over a wide range of visible spectrum. The absorbance increases with increase in concentration of Ru in ethanol. The extracts of beetroot, strawberry and mixed fruits show a peak in absorbance spectra at 501nm, 416nm and 332nm, respectively, indicating the absorption over a wide range of visible spectrum. Maximum efficiency of DSSCs utilizing PNPs sensitized with beetroot and strawberry dyes are found to be 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively.

Microwave‐assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Cu‐doped TiO ₂ nanoparticles for efficient dye‐sensitized solar cell with improved open‐circuit voltage

Summary An important reason for the underlying power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is the low open‐circuit voltage (V oc ). Considerable efforts have been made to increase the V oc of DSSCs by suppressing charge carrier recombination dynamics, co‐sensitization, and other strategies. Herein, we report an enhancement of the V oc by the incorporation of Cu into TiO 2 microstructure via microwave‐assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The prepared nanoparticles and the photoanodes were tested for their efficacy with various structural, optical, and electrical characterization tools. It was found that the incorporation of Cu 2+ into TiO 2 lattice raises its conduction band (CB) edge and shifted the Fermi level upwards, which contribute towards enhanced V oc . A significant enhancement in V oc from 0.714 to 0.781 V was observed by the Cu incorporation. An optimized 1 wt% Cu modified TiO 2 DSSC has shown an efficiency of 6.94% with a high V oc of 0.762 V.
