Mesoporous bioactive glass combined with graphene oxide scaffolds for bone repair

Recently there has been an increasing interest in bioactive factors with robust osteogenic ability and angiogenesis function to repair bone defects.However, previously tested factors have not achieved satisfactory results due to low loading doses and a short protein half-life.Finding a validated stable substitute for these growth factors and apply it to the construction of porous scaffolds with the dual function of osteogenesis and angiogenesis is therefore vital for bone tissue regeneration engineering.Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted increasing attention due to its good biocompatibility, osteogenic, and angiogenic functions.This study aims to design a scaffold composed of mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) and GO to investigate whether the composite porous scaffold promotes local angiogenesis and bone healing.Our in vitro studies demonstrate that the MBG-GO scaffolds have better cytocompatibility and higher osteogenesis differentiation ability with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) than the purely MBG scaffold.Moreover, MBG-GO scaffolds promote vascular ingrowth and, importantly, enhance bone repair at the defect site in a rat cranial defect model.The new bone was fully integrated not only with the periphery but also with the center of the scaffold.From these results, it is believed that the MBG-GO scaffolds possess excellent osteogenic-angiogenic properties which will make them appealing candidates for repairing bone defects.The novelty of this research is to provide a new material to treat bone defects in the clinic.

Kármán Vortex Street in an Immiscible Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract In this paper, we investigate a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii system with a moving obstacle potential, which describes the vortex shedding for an immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensate composed of different hyperfine states of 87 Rb atoms. Numerical simulations indicate that, the Kármán vortex street is discovered in one component, while the Kármán-like vortex street named "ghost vortex street" is formed in the other. The other typical patterns of vortex shedding, such as vortex dipoles, V-shaped vortex pairs and corresponding "ghost vortex shedding", can also be found in the wake of obstacle. The instantaneous and time-averaged drag force acting on obstacle potential are calculated, which show the contribution to drag force from vortex shedding. The parameter region for various vortex patterns, critical velocity for vortex emission, and superfluid Reynolds number are presented and discussed. Finally, we provide an experimental protocol for the above realization and observation.

Tailoring holes for improving the efficiency of single-mode photonic crystal waveguide lasers on InP substrate

The authors show that the use of triangular lattice photonic crystals (PhCs) with wide holes can significantly improve the lasing performances of PhC waveguides in the InP substrate approach. The study is carried out on W2-3 waveguides made in PhCs whose air filling factor is varied from ∼25% to 55%. Intrinsically single-mode laser emissions with reduced threshold (/2) are obtained when the laser mode folds deeply into the gap. Concurrently, the slope of the light-light characteristic is increased by a factor of 14. The laser spectral behavior and threshold evolution are explained from three-dimensional finite difference time domain calculations.

To solve the non-uniform background problem induced by the illumination with uneven light intensity in the system of detecting surface imperfection on large-aperture optical components based on the machine vision,an image background correction method is adopted based on the mathematical morphology.An image segmentation algorithm of image gradient in combination with Otsu method is proposed.The experimental results show that the proposed method has the good anti-noise performance and high extracting accuracy for the blurred images at a certain degree.

Multi physical field simulation of medium voltage switchgear and optimal design

In this paper, the temperature rise situation under normal operation of a 12kV medium voltage switchgear is studied through modeling and simulation method. Firstly, in the simulation analysis of the whole switchgear, based on the theory of eddy current field, gas flow field, and temperature field, the temperature rise distribution of the switchgear under the condition of natural convection and forced convection is simulated and analyzed. Then, several improvement methods are taken to reduce the temperature rise that emerge in the switchgear, including using spring contact finger structure to replace flexible connection structure. The simulation results also show that the spring contact structure is beneficial to reduce the temperature rise of vacuum interrupter (VI) and mechanical connection part.

SNR enhancement of magnetic fields measurement with the diamond NV center using a compound filter system

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are progressively favored for room-temperature magnetic field measurement. The signal to noise ratio (SNR) optimization for NV diamond magnetometry generally concentrates on signal amplitude enhancement rather than efficient noise processing. Here, we report a compound filter system combining a wavelet denoising method and an adaptive filter for the realization of an efficient weak magnetic measurement with a high SNR. It allows enhanced magnetic field measurement with an average SNR enhancement of 17.80 dB at 50 nT within 500 mHz to 100 Hz and 14.76 dB at 500 mHz within 50 nT to 1100 nT. The introduction of this system in NV diamond magnetometry is aimed to improve signal quality by effectively eliminating the noise and retaining ideal signals.
