Fluorine atom substituted aromatic polyimides: Unlocking extraordinary dielectric performance and comprehensive advantages

Low-dielectric polymers face prominent development challenges at high frequency. Particularly, the relationship between the high-frequency dielectric loss and polymer structures remains not clear enough. Besides, the strategies for achieving low dielectric loss usually have to scarify other important materials properties, e.g. heat resistance or dimensional stability. Herein, fluorine-containing aromatic polyimides were systematically investigated. Among them, simple fluorine atom (-F) substituted polyimides exhibit remarkable low dielectric loss at high frequency (10 GHz) as well as comprehensive advantages, including near-zero thermal expansion coefficient, extremely high thermal decomposition stability, high optical transmittance and excellent mechanical properties. The fundamental mechanisms of low dielectric loss are fully discussed. Benefiting from the unique electric effect and compact size of -F group, -F substituted polyimides display low dipolar density and strongly restricted dipolar motion, contributing to a reduced permanent dipolar polarization loss. Moreover, the concept of induced dipolar polarization was introduced to illustrate the nontrivial impact of F-substituted effect on conjugated electron cloud polarization loss in aromatic polymer system. This work not only provides valuable insights for understanding the mechanism of dielectric loss at high frequency for aromatic polymers, but also opens up broader application possibilities of polyimides in microelectronic and wireless communications industries.

Half-integer topological defects paired via string micelles in polar liquids

Abstract Ferroelectric nematic (NF) liquid crystals present a compelling platform for exploring topological defects in polar fields, while their structural properties can be significantly altered by ionic doping. In this study, we demonstrate that doping the ferroelectric nematic material RM734 with cationic polymers enables the formation of polymeric micelles that connect pairs of half-integer topological defects. Polarizing optical microscopy reveals that these string defects exhibit butterfly textures, featured with a 2D polarization field divided by Néel-type kink walls into domains exhibiting either uniform polarization or negative splay and bend deformations. Through analysis of electrophoretic motion and direct measurements of polarization divergences, we show that the string micelles are positively charged, and their side regions exhibit positive bound charges. To elucidate these observations, we propose a charge double-layer model for the string defects: the positively charged cationic polymer chains and densely packed RM734 molecules form a Stern charge layer, while small anionic ions and positive bound charges constitute the charge diffusion layer. Notably, our experiments indicate that only cationic polymer doping effectively induces the formation of these unique string defects. These findings enhance our understanding of ionic doping effects and provide valuable insights for engineering polar topologies in liquid crystal systems.

General phase-structure relationship in polar rod-shaped liquid crystals: Importance of shape anisotropy and dipolar strength

Ferroelectricity is a property with spontaneous polarization, which is of paramount importance in modern electrooptic applications. Yet, its observations are mostly limited to solids or chiral smectic C liquid crystals with nearly no fluidity. The fluidic ferroelectrics, called ferroelectric nematics, have recently become available by incorporating strong polarity into the apolar liquid crystalline orientational field. Here, we present a rational principle for designing the ferroelectric materials and controlling their phase behaviors. We reveal that, while the apolar nematic order with the second-rank tensor originates from the shape anisotropy in the apolar nematic state, the polarization field serves as an additional mechanism for stabilizing polar nematic orders. Based on a comprehensive set of examinations and machine-learningdriven analyses for about 150 chemically distinct polar rod-shaped molecules, we uncover that the interplay between the shape anisotropy and polarization field gives rise to a diversification of the polar liquid crystal behaviors. The strategy offers much broader design flexibility and may facilitate the development of future polar functional liquid crystals.

Development of emergent ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals with highly fluorinated and rigid mesogens

The emerging ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals have been attracting broader interests in new liquid crystal physics and their unique material properties. One big challenge for the ferroelectric nematic research is to enrich the material choice, which is now limited to RM734 and DIO families as representatives, in sharp contrast to the enormously diverse variety of the traditional apolar nematic liquid crystals. Here, we report a design of novel ferroelectric nematic materials with highly fluorinated and rigid mesogens. Noteworthily, they show distinct chemical structural features compared with previous aromatic ester-based molecules. The ferroelectric nematic phase was identified and confirmed through rigorous experiments. The bulk polarization was found to become purely along the long axis director, creating giant dielectric anisotropy. This work demonstrates a great potential for expanding ferroelectric nematic material diversity and will accelerate the corresponding application research and technology innovation.

A Polymer Network Layer Containing Dually Anchored Ionic Liquids for Stable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high sulfur utilization, long-cycle life, and dendrite-free features hold great promise for the development of next-generation energy storage devices of high energy density. Considerable efforts have been committed to solving the polysulfide shuttle problem toward highly stable Li-S batteries. Here, a unique polymer network containing dually anchored ionic liquids (DA-PIL) is devolped to improve the cycling performance and coulombic efficiency of Li-S batteries. This DA-PIL electrolyte incorporates the amphiphilicity of both the polysulfides anion and lithium cation, creating an ionic function layer on polypropylene separator. Noteworthily, the DA-PIL network is "clean" in the sense that no free ionic specifies are introduced to the electrolyte system. The DA-PIL layer not only enables strong supression against polysulfide shuttling but simultaneously allows fast lithium transportation owing to cooperate electrostatic interaction among anchored cations and anions. The DA-PIL layer functionalized on a polypropylene separator can boost excellent stability of Li-S battery with >1600 h cycling test at 0.25 mA cm-2 . The Li-S cell with DA-PIL layer delivers a higher discharge capacity of 827.4 mAh g-1 at 1C. A discharge capacity of 630.6 mAh g-1 is retained after 1000 cycles.
