Quantum Hall effect induced by electron-electron interaction in disordered GaAs layers with a three-dimensional spectrum

It is shown that the observed Quantum Hall Effect in epitaxial layers of heavily doped n-type GaAs with thickness (50-140 nm) larger the mean free path of the conduction electrons (15-30 nm) and, therefore, with a three-dimensional single-particle spectrum is induced by the electron-electron interaction. The Hall resistance R_xy of the thinnest sample reveals a wide plateau at small activation energy E_a=0.4 K found in the temperature dependence of the transverse resistance R_xx. The different minima in the transverse conductance G_xx of the different samples show a universal temperature dependence (logarithmic in a large range of rescaled temperatures T/T_0) which is reminiscent of electron-electron-interaction effects in coherent diffusive transport.

Electromagnetic excitation of sound in YBa2Cu3O7−x ceramic

It is shown that standing acoustic waves can be excited electromagnetically in superconducting plates of YBa2Cu3O7−x ceramic. The velocity of sound is found to be a multiple-valued function of the ceramic density and strongly dependent on thermal treatment of the samples.

Quantization of the Hall Conductance in a Three-Dimensional Layer

Quantization of the Hall conductance is observed in epitaxial layers of heavily doped $n$-type GaAs with thickness $(\ensuremath{\approx}100\mathrm{nm})$ larger than both the screening length and the mean free path of the conduction electrons. Therefore, the single-particle spectrum of the electrons is three dimensional. Analogous to the quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional systems, the magnetic field $B$ dependence of the Hall conductance ${G}_{\mathrm{xy}}$ shows, below 1 K, steps at quantized values ${\mathrm{ie}}^{2}/h$ for $i\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2,4,6$ together with pronounced minima in the transverse conductance ${G}_{\mathrm{xx}}$. The minima in ${G}_{\mathrm{xx}}$ and $|{\mathrm{dG}}_{\mathrm{xy}}/\mathrm{dB}|$ appear in magnetic fields where, at $T\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}4\mathrm{K}$, ${G}_{\mathrm{xy}}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}ie}^{2}/h$.
