Supervisory control based wide area back-up protection scheme for power transmission network

Recent blackouts have induced a sense of urgency among protection engineers to revisit the concept of zone-3 protection in power transmission network. Zone-3 mal-operation is reported to be one of the primary causes behind most of the cascaded outages. The main purpose of this paper is to present a supervisory control based wide area back-up protection scheme. A data-mining algorithm, known as decision trees, is used to classify the state of power transmission system. Further, phase angle of positive sequence integrated impedance is utilised to assist the existing zone-3 protection in order to avoid unnecessary tripping during stressed power system condition. The studies performed on western system coordinating council (WSCC)-9-bus system in Real Time Digital Simulator platform validate the proposed algorithm under various faults and stressed conditions.

A User Defined Characteristics Based Optimal Coordination Of Directional Overcurrent Relay for Microgrids

The integration of distributed generations (DGs) in the microgrids creates numerous diificulties to the present protection schemes. The magnitude and direction of fault current changes significantly in a microgrid upon DG allocation, that may lead to loss of coordination among the protective relays. This paper proposes a user-defined characteristics-based optimal relay coordination scheme for AC microgrids. The user defined characteristics involve constants that adjusts the nature of the relay characteristics as variable controllable parameter that are optimally decided along with time multiplier setting (TMS) by chaotic cuckoo search (CCS) algorithm. The performance of the CCS algorithm is tested on IEC 61850 microgrid model penetrated with and without DGs. The proposed scheme is tested and also compared with existing standard relay characteristics-based scheme. Extensive case studies are carried out in the microgrid interfaced with mixed type of DGs such as inverter-based and induction-based DGs to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed CCS algorithm-oriented relay coordination technique for designing a good protection method suitable for AC microgrids.

Wavelet based fast fault detection in LVDC micro-grid

This Low Voltage DC (LVDC) distribution system is gaining momentum which includes Distributed energy resources and DC sensitive electronic loads. However, due to lack of standards and mature experience in DC protection, LVDC application is still an elusive issue. In order to ameliorate these deficiencies, a wavelet based fast fault protection scheme using local measurements has been proposed for eliminating threat to Voltage Source Converters during fault. The wavelet energy and change in energy are the key indicators to identify the fault with wide variations in operating conditions including the impact of grid-connected and islanded mode of operation. Further, the robustness of the proposed fast fault detection scheme has been validated for high impedance ground fault. The proposed scheme validation using Real Time Digital Simulation indicates that the proposed fault detector for LVDC micro-grid has potential ability in performing the desired task.

Optimal integral planning of primary-secondary distribution networks via MOEA

This paper highlights an application of a restricted population based multi-objective seeker-optimization-algorithm (MOSOA) for designing integral power distribution system (IPDS) including the grids - the primary(PG) and secondary (SG). The proposes scheme considered both the PG and SG separately along with the factors that couple both problems (PG & SG) such as sharing of the common right of way, use the same poles etc. including other factors that shows significant effect on total investment cost. The proposed planning methodology uses a contingency-load-loss index (CLLI) for reliability evaluation, does not depends on the failure rate and fault repair duration of branches. The proposed approach performance is assessed on a real case of a 75-electrical node primary-secondary residential distribution network, considering real-time design practices. The efficacy of the proposed planning model is shown by a qualitative comparison with NSGA-II.

Performance analysis of smart grid dynamic HAN over Rician fading channel

In smart grid (SG) communications, the home area network (HAN) plays a vital role in managing data transmission among communicating devices through a smart meter (SM). Rician fading distribution closely replicates an indoor communication channel in SG HAN system. Thus, channel link is modeled as a Rician fading channel in this paper and Multi‐user selection scheme is employed in SM. Further, a closed‐form expression for average bit error probability (ABEP) performance of indoor dynamic HANs with communicating devices using phase‐shift keying (PSK) modulation is derived and analyzed the effect of traffic intensity, the total number of devices and Rician factor for the considered system. The expression for average channel capacity (ACC) of the SG HAN system is also derived and analyzed by varying the parameters of interest.

Reliability-constrained Based Optimal Placement and Sizing of Multiple Distributed Generators in Power Distribution Network Using Cat Swarm Optimization

Abstract This article presents optimal placement and sizing of multiple distributed generators to achieve higher overall system reliability in large-scale primary distribution networks using a novel random search algorithm known as cat swarm optimization. A composite reliability index is used as the objective function in the optimization process. Furthermore, the effect of multiple distributed generator units on power transfer capacity and power loss reduction has been observed. Extensive simulations are carried out based on three practical distribution systems to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Further, qualitative comparisons are made with adaptive weight particle swarm optimization, particle swarm optimization with constriction factor, and binary-coded genetic algorithm to show the efficacy of the proposed method for optimal placement and sizing of distributed generators in power distribution networks.

Combined MDS-GTA and CPSO-based multi-stage planning of power distribution networks

The paper presents multistage planning of an electrical distribution networks including distributed generation (DG). Two important issues of the planning problem have been addressed. First part of this paper is focused on a modified direct search–graph theoretical approach (MDS–GTA) for feeder routing of a meshed distribution system. The second part focuses on DG placement problem in the optimal radial distribution network obtained through MDS–GTA, using constricted particle swarm optimisation (CPSO) approach. A suitable combination of the objective function and constraints are included for obtaining the minimum cost network, through MDS–GTA of meshed distribution system and to select the most suitable bus for DG placement using CPSO approach, respectively. The combined technique is extensively validated on two test distribution systems and the results obtained are highly encouraging for feeder routing and DG placement in distribution networks.

Evaluation of Control Strategies within Hybrid DC/AC Microgrids using Typhoon HIL

Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) based simulation improves effectiveness of system simulation process by enabling interaction with part of the physical components. Hybrid ac/dc microgrids comprise of both dc and ac distribution, and comprise of different sources, loads and storage, interfaced to either bus. A critical factor related to successful microgrid implementation is management of energy interaction amongst the different components. The control systems for each of the different elements need to be critically validated in such a configuration. This paper presents the use of Typhoon HIL as the validation tool for control systems for all the constituents within hybrid dc-ac microgrid. The modelled Micro Grid consists of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as a PV plant, Diesel Generator, Fuel Cell, Wind Farm, Micro-turbines, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Converters. The simulation of Bidirectional Converter, connected between ac and dc buses, and its operation has been validated first using Matlab Simulink, and then compared to Typhoon HIL 402 based simulation.
