Modeling of Travel Behavior in Budapest: Leisure Travelers

People usually travel with different preferences to reach the location of their leisure activities, where transport mode is a decisive factor. Previous studies focus on developing discrete choice models for people where a trip purpose is considered as an explanatory variable. In this paper, discrete choice modeling is applied to model the behavior of leisure travelers, to understand the impact of several factors on the transport mode choice, such as sociodemographic variables. A sample of 1100 travelers from a household survey in Budapest is used in the analysis. The sample includes the daily activity plans of leisure travelers and their sociodemographic as well as economic characteristics. A Multinomial Logit (MNL) model is applied, where the data are examined across travel time variables and travel characteristics, such as travel time, travel cost, age, gender, income, and car ownership. The developed models are used to predict the probability of using the different transport modes based on the characteristics of the travelers and their trips. The model indicates that time and the cost impact travel negatively. While other variables show varied impacts on the transport mode selection. The output of this study is important for decision-makers to understand the patterns of leisure tips in a city.

Multitasking onboard of conventional transport modes and shared autonomous vehicles

To mitigate the negative impact of travel time, travelers are predisposed to multitask onboard when traveling. The preferences of people determine how the travel time is utilized. Travelers try to minimize the unused part of travel time or convert it into a productive time by doing onboard activities and choosing the proper transport mode. Current study focuses on the travelers' behavior onboard when traveling to their main destinations. The research studies the urban areas where the travel time is relatively short. Generally, most studies examine multitasking onboard of one or more conventional transport modes (CTMs) without defining the area type of the trips. Moreover, there is a demand on those papers that concern multitasking onboard of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Thus, current research focuses on one case of AVs while studying onboard multitasking, i.e., the shared autonomous vehicle (SAV). A survey is designed and distributed in Budapest, Hungary, and a sample size of 276 travelers is collected. Respondents choose the onboard activities and the tools that are carried and used onboard during their travel. The onboard activities are examined with SAV. During the analysis, the following methods are used: multiple response analysis, central tendency, Chi-square, Cramer's V, Cochran's Q test, and A Kruskal-Wallis. As a result of analyzing the differences between the activities onboard of SAVs and CTMs, the factors that affect onboard activities are found. Factors influencing the usage of the travelers' carried tools and those that negatively affect the travel time and the acceptability of SAVs are identified, too. In conclusion, travelers' onboard behavior is studied, and it is found that SAVs are preferred over CTMs to maximize the onboard activities and consequentially, increase the utilities.

Demographic Analysis of Active Travel Users in Urban Context

Active transportation, such as walking, cycling, and micro-mobility modes, has received a lot of attention in recent years due to its potential benefits to urban residents, such as less traffic, better air quality, more opportunities to get exercise, and an overall higher quality of life. In this study, we used Classification and Regression Trees (CART) to compare and contrast three mobility options: shared micro-mobility, individual micro-mobility, and walking. We surveyed 219 people living in Budapest, Hungary, to learn more about their travel habits and investigate the demographic elements that influence people's mode choice, such as age, gender, ownership of micro-mobility modes, education, job, and income. Results showed that ownership of personal micro-mobility modes, and age as important predictors of active travel mode choice. Males seem to prioritize cost and weather conditions when choosing shared micromobility modes, while females value safety and weather conditions. Our findings can guide policy decisions and urban planning initiatives by identifying the most significant predictors of mode choice and evaluating the possible benefits and drawbacks of each mode.

Simulation of the Daily Activity Plans of Travelers Using the Park-and-Ride System and Autonomous Vehicles: Work and Shopping Trip Purposes

The preferences of travelers determines the utility of daily activity plans. Decision-makers can affect the preference of travelers when they force private car users to use park-and-ride (P&R) facilities as a way of decreasing traffic in city centers. The P&R system has been shown to be effective in reducing uninterrupted increases in traffic congestion, especially in city centers. Therefore, the impacts of P&R on travel behavior and the daily activity plans of both worker and shopper travelers were studied in this paper. Moreover, autonomous vehicles (AVs) are a promising technology for the coming decade. A simulation of the AV as part of a multimodal system, when the P&R system was integrated in the daily activity plans, was carried out to determine the required AV fleet size needed to fulfill a certain demand and to study the impacts of AVs on the behavior of travelers (trip time and distance). Specifically, a group of travelers, who use private cars as their transport mode, was studied, and certain modifications to their daily activity plans, including P&R facilities and changing their transport mode, were introduced. Using the MATSim open-source tool, four scenarios were simulated based on the mentioned modifications. The four scenarios included (1) a simulation of the existing transport modes of the travelers, (2) a simulation of their daily activity plans when their transport modes were changed to AVs, (3) a simulation of the travelers, when P&R facilities were included in their activity chain plans, and (4) a simulation of their daily activity plans, when both P&R and AVs were included in their activity chain plans. The result showed that using the P&R system increased overall travel time, compared with using a private car. The results also demonstrated that using AVs as a replacement for conventional cars reduced travel time. In conclusion, the impact of P&R and AVs on the travel behavior of certain travelers was evaluated in this paper.

Travel Behavior of Car Travelers with the Presence of Park-and-Ride Facilities and Autonomous Vehicles

Travelers' behavior is predicted based on their individual preferences. People search for alternatives to maximize their benefit from doing activities, such as increasing the activity time by minimizing the travel time. Traffic congestion and the scarcity of parking spaces in the city center motivate the decision-makers to encourage travelers to use the park-and-ride (P&R) system. An evaluation concerning the impact of using the P&R system on the travel behavior of car users is conducted. Some of the existing P&R facilities are incorporated into the daily activity plans of car travelers to produce new daily activity plans (i.e., P&R facility is considered an activity). By using the Multi-Agent Transport Simulation (MATSim) open-source tool, simulations of the daily activity plans including the P&R system and autonomous vehicles (AVs) are conducted. The study examines three scenarios: (1) a simulation of the existing condition, (2) a simulation of the daily activity plans of the travelers with the P&R system, and (3) a simulation of the daily activity plans of the travelers with the P&R system and AVs. The results show that using the P&R system increases the overall travel time compared with the existing conditions, and the use of AVs as a transport mode impacts the existing modal share as follows: 64 % of the car users switch to AVs, while 15 % of the car users switch to public transport. The output of this study might be used by policy-makers in parking pricing and the location of the P&R facilities.

Evaluating Onboard Multitasking on Mode Choice: Conventional Car and Autonomous Vehicle

Travelers try to conduct onboard activities during traveling to decrease the negative impact of travel time. This research paper studied the impact of multitasking availability on the travel behavior of people onboard of autonomous vehicle (AV) and conventional car (CAR). Several studies focused mainly on the travel behavior of people onboard of conventional transport modes (CTMs) rather than AV because the last is not still on the market. Besides, a scarcity in studies that concern multitasking in AV is noticed. In this paper impacts of multitasking on the travel behavior were covered concerning two transport modes, CAR, and shared autonomous vehicle (SAV) where only the main destinations of travelers inside urban areas are considered. A discrete choice experiment was prepared and followed by a stated preference (SP) survey. A sample size of 2008 observations was collected. Panel data-Mixed Logit (ML) and Multinomial Logit (MNL) models were examined including the travel cost, travel time, and multitasking availability. The results are, the value of travel time (VOT) of SAV is lower than CAR, the multitasking availability increases the probability of being in a transport mode, and the impact of multitasking in SAV is higher than CAR. Thus, people tend to choose SAV over CAR to maximize the utilities when the multitasking availability is considered.

Impacts of Shared Autonomous Vehicles on the Travelers’ Mobility

In this paper agent-based modeling was used, and simulation of activities were conducted to study both the existing behavior of travelers and the behavior of travelers considering shared autonomous vehicles (SAV). In the modeling framework distance, travel time, travel cost, fleet size and capacities of vehicle types were used as main parameters. Additionally, we created user groups (long commute drivers, car rider, high class income), who are more willing to use SAV. Simulations of the daily plan of activities were performed using Multi-agent Transport simulation tool (MATSim), which applies the concept of co-evolutionary algorithm. Travel plans of around 3000 persons were simulated, and fleet sizes of 20, 50, 100 SAVs were examined. The results showed that 1 SAV can replace 8 conventional vehicles with acceptable average waiting time ranging from 7-10 minutes and usage of 4-seats (shared trip). The utility function that were used in the study showed that the travel time decreased by 17% and the travel distance decreased by 20% after 100 iterations performed on the existing plans. Moreover, the long commuter and high-income travelers can be served by 20 SAV with waiting time of 10 minutes and trip duration of 20 minutes. In this case 1 SAV can replace 6 conventional cars with acceptable average waiting time 10-15 minutes.
