Surface and interfacial segregation of polyethersulfone deuterated chain ends determined by neutron reflectivity

ABSTRACT The surface localization of polymer chain ends has been shown to be an effective method for surface composition control in amorphous polymer films. This work determines chain end distribution in thin polyethersulfone (PESU) films end‐capped with deuterated compounds of varying size and composition. Neutron reflectivity revealed the preferential localization of chain ends to the PESU‐air interface, independent of chain end identity. The length scale of the chain end concentration gradient was determined to differ from that predicted for flexible chain polymers. Atomic force microscopy and contact angle analysis demonstrated that chain end localization allows for improved control of nanoscale and macroscale surface properties of PESU films. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bis-phenylethynyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes: new high-temperature, processable thermosetting materials

Bis-phenylethynyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (bis-PE-POSS) compounds were synthesized and thermally cured yielding crosslinked materials. After curing at 370 °C, thermal decomposition occurs near 600 °C under nitrogen. These materials were synthesized by condensation of a new phenylethynyl-functional dichlorosilane onto tetrasilanol phenyl POSS, yielding two geometric isomers.

Structure and energetics of hydroxyl‐terminated polybutadiene via density functional theory

Abstract Hydroxyl‐terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a commonly used binding polymer in industry to produce polyurethanes. HTPB synthesis via allylic radical propagation leads to varied compositions and conformations that govern the bulk physical and mechanical properties of this polymer. While HTPB is incredibly well studied, its enthalpy of formation is still an open question and is critical to understanding the energetic contributions of the binding polymer in propellant formulations. This study investigates a series of HTPB polymers of experimentally relevant size and composition to understand the effects of conformations and monomer compositions on enthalpies of formation. The distribution of component monomer species comprising HTPB polymers is shown to have a significant effect on the condensed phase enthalpy of formation. The present study provides a best estimate of 331.2±50.3 kJ/mol or 150.7±22.9 kJ/kg for the condensed phase enthalpy of formation for commercially available HTPB formulations. The effects of the polymer folding motifs are smaller but distinct, with more highly folded structures exhibiting lower enthalpies of formation.

Perfluoropyridine as a Scaffold for Semifluorinated Thiol‐ene Networks with Readily Tunable Thermal Properties

Abstract Two new trifunctional alkene monomers based on the highly modular perfluoropyridine scaffold are synthesized with an aliphatic and an aromatic moiety, 4‐penten‐1‐ol and eugenol, respectively. The monomers are the basis for thiol‐ene thermoset materials, formulated against a difunctional or trifunctional thiol. Systems based on these novel monomers have a wide range of thermal properties, with glass transition temperatures ( T g s) spanning from −42 to 21 °C. Mixed systems obey the Fox equation, and T g s of the mixtures can be tuned to specific values in that range. Thermal degradation temperatures follow a similar trend, with decomposition temperatures ranging from 274 to 348 °C in nitrogen with varying compositions having tailorability therein. This new class of semifluorinated thermoset materials with tunable thermal properties has several potential applications within the aerospace industry, such as sealants and coatings, where stability and survivability at high temperatures in harsh environmental conditions are imperative.

Three-Dimensional Morphology Control Yielding Enhanced Hole Mobility in Air-Processed Organic Photovoltaics: Demonstration with Grazing-Incidence Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering

Polymer organic photovoltaic (OPV) device performance is defined by the three-dimensional morphology of the phase-separated domains in the active layer. Here, we determine the evolution of morphology through different stages of tailored solvent vapor and thermal annealing techniques in air-processed poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl)/phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester-based OPV blends. A comparative evaluation of the effect of solvent type used for vapor annealing was performed using grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy to probe the active-layer morphology. A nonhalogenated orthogonal solvent was found to impart controlled morphological features within the exciton diffusion length scales, enhanced absorbance, greater crystallinity, increased paracrystalline disorder, and improved charge-carrier mobility. Low-boiling, fast-diffusing isopropanol allowed the greatest control over the nanoscale structure of the solvents evaluated and yielded a cocontinuous morphology with narrowed domains and enhanced paths for the charge carrier to reach the anode.
