Upgrading rice husk biochar characteristics through microwave‐assisted phosphoric acid pretreatment followed by co‐pyrolysis with LDPE

Abstract In the present study, an attempt was made to upgrade the characteristics of rice husk biochar through a combination of two strategies: (i) microwave‐assisted phosphoric acid pretreatment (MAPP) of rice husk followed by (ii) co‐pyrolysis of pretreated rice husk with low‐density polyethylene (LDPE). The analysis of pretreated rice husk through biochemical composition, proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) showed that MAPP significantly improved the properties of rice husk. The pretreated rice husk had higher fixed carbon and volatile matter as compared with untreated rice husk (19.65% v/s 13.35% and 66.24% v/s 61.93%) and its ash content was lower than untreated rice husk (9.75% v/s 16.85%). The TGA analysis showed that MAPP improved the thermal stability of rice husk. At 719.65 °C, the residual masses of rice husk and pretreated rice husks were 13.76% and 23.75% respectively. An analysis of properties of biochars revealed that, biochar produced through combined mode had the highest carbon content (86.14%), the least ash content (1.29%), the least H/C and O/C values (0.29 and 0.09), and the highest Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area (35.022 m 2 /g). Raman spectroscopy and XRD results showed that the biochar had a more orderly structure and less structural defects as compared to biochar produced from rice husk alone. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Enhancement of lipid productivity of Chlorella protothecoides cultivated in secondary wastewater under nitrogen starvation through optimization of environmental factors

A lab scale externally illuminated photobioreactor was used to evaluate the lipid productivity (LP) of microalga Chlorella protothecoides (SAG-211-10C) cultivated in municipal secondary waste water supplemented with CO2. Experiments were conducted in two stages: growth phase (GP) and nitrogen starvation phase (NSP). The influence of five environmental factors (light intensity [LI], photoperiod, temperature, concentration of CO2, pH) on LP of Chlorella protothecoides under both phases was studied and the parameters were individually optimized. Under optimum operating conditions in GP (LI 6 klux, photoperiod 12 h:12 h, temperature 25°C, 6% concentration of CO2), the total nitrogen was completely consumed after 8 days of operation and highest LP of 64.7 mg/(L.day) was obtained. This value was further enhanced to 106.65 mg/(L.day) by operating the photobioreactor in NSP under its optimum conditions (LI of 4 klux, photoperiod of 16 h:8 h, temperature 25°C, pH 8, 4% concentration of CO2). Under optimum operating conditions, removal efficiency of total phosphorous and Chemical Oxygen Demand were 100 and 70.19%, respectively, and highest carbon fixation rate of 549.16 mg CO2/(L.day) was observed.

Denitrification: Mass Transfer and Kinetic Studies

The biological nitrification-denitrification process is used extensively for removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewaters. In this paper the results obtained by both batch & continuous reactor studies on denitrification using pure culture of Pseudomonas stutzeri are presented. Batch fermentations (suspended culture) were carried out to denitrify the waste water containing different concentrations of nitrates. Growth kinetics was studied at room temperature and methanol is used as the sole carbon source. By using linear technique it was observed that the logistic model was suitable at these conditions for the growth of Pseudomonas stutzeri. At a given temperature, the specific denitrification rate appeared to depend on the initial nitrogen concentration, while the specific carbon consumption rate was a function of the initial carbon content. Furthermore, a C:N ratio of 3:1 was sufficient for complete denitrification. In the case of continuous recirculation studies using fluidized reactor, the performance of reactor was investigated for denitrification of waste water using immobilized pure culture of Pseudomonas stutzeri on glass beads (attached growth). Kinetics and mass transfer studies were conducted for various initial nitrate concentrations and flow rates. Developing Monod's growth kinetics to these conditions, it was observed that denitrification follows zero order reaction. The experimental results were used to simulate biofilm model. Knowing the concentrations of biofilm at the surface, the external mass transfer coefficient was calculated. The majority of models developed, however, assumed external mass transfer limitation to be negligible, and therefore its effects were ignored. To reflect the real situation in microbial aggregate systems, both external and internal mass transfer limitations, and their dependence on the particle size distribution, have to be taken into account.

Optimization of parameters affecting dealcoholization of anthocyanin extract by liquid emulsion membrane using response surface methodology

Colour is one of most important properties of foods and beverages and is a basis for their identification and acceptability. Anthocyanin from red cabbage was extracted using 50 % ethanol. The extract was dealcoholized by Liquid Emlusion Membrane technology (LEM). Parafin oil was used as a solvent, lecithin was used as a surfactant and water as stripping medium. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to design the experiments. A total of 30 experiments were conducted in accordance with central composite rotatable design. Design expert 8 was used to design the experiments. % extraction of alcohol in each case was determined. A suitable model was fitted to experimental data by regression analysis (R-square=0.93). Response surface plot were analysed and optimum parameters for dealcoholization were found to be speed=365.44 rpm, time=18.62 min, concentration of lecithin=2.84 %, feed to emulsion ratio=3.05. A maximum dealcoholisation of 18.63 % was observed under these conditions
