Rare earth stibolyl and bismolyl sandwich complexes

The design of molecular rare earth complexes to achieve unique magnetic and bonding properties is a growing area of research with possible applications in advanced materials and molecular magnetics. Recent efforts focus on developing ligand frameworks that can enhance magnetic characteristics. Here we show the synthesis and characterization of a class of rare earth complexes, [(η5-C4R4Sb)Ln(η8-C8H8)] and [(η5-C4R4Bi)Ln(η8-C8H8)], featuring η5-coordinated stibolyl and bismolyl ligands. The ligand aromaticity and bonding situation within these complexes are investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Magnetic studies of the ErIII analogues reveal large barriers and intriguing properties, including waist-restricted hysteresis and slow relaxation of the magnetization, making them single-molecule magnets. Comparison between the experimental barrier and CASSCF-SO calculations indicates that relaxation in all systems occurs through high-energy excited states. These findings suggest that stibolyl and bismolyl ligands can be promising candidates for achieving high-energy barriers in Er-based SMMs, offering a pathway to molecular designs with enhanced magnetic properties.

Phospholyl and Arsolyl Triple-Decker Sandwich Complexes of Europium(II) and Strontium(II)

To study the influence of heteroatoms on the photophysical properties of divalent Eu and Sr complexes, the synthesis of the phospholyl and arsolyl compounds [{(Dtp)(thf)M}2{μ-η8:η8-C8H8}] (M = EuII and SrII; Dtp = 3,4-dimethyl-2,5-bis(tert-butyl)phospholyl) and [{(Dtas)(thf)M}2{μ-η8:η8-C8H8}] (M = EuII and SrII; Dtas = 3,4-dimethyl-2,5-bis(tert-butyl)arsolyl) is reported. Organometallic compounds of divalent europium with P and As heterocyclic ligands have not been described previously. They were prepared by salt elimination reactions from potassium phospholyl or arsolyl, K2C8H8, and EuI2(thf)2 or SrI2. Photophysical properties were investigated alongside a reference cyclopentadienyl complex with a comparable structure. Critically, the influence of the heteroatom on the photoluminescence emission and excitation and quantum yields of the complexes is significant. Density functional theory calculations were performed to rationalize the ligand influences.

The Groebke–Blackburn–Bienaymé three-component reaction (GBB-3CR) has contributed enormously to the progress of organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science. Diversity-oriented synthesis of skeletally diverse cyclophanyl-derived fused imidazo[1,2-a]heterocycles by one-pot GBB-3CR involving formyl-cyclophane components in combination with various aliphatic and aromatic isocyanides and heteroaromatic amidines gives a library of versatile cyclophanyl imidazoles ligands.
