Densities, viscosities, and surface tensions of 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (AEPD) + water mixtures were measured over wide temperatures ranging from (303.15 to 343.15) K. The concentration ranges of AEPD were (20−100) mass % for density measurements and 20−80 mass % for viscosity and surface tension measurements. The experimental values were correlated as a function of temperature and concentration. The average absolute deviations were found to be 0.07% for density, 0.56% for viscosity, and 0.42% for surface tension.

In this paper, we approximate arbitrary decision boundaries by piecewise linear decision boundaries. Although advanced classifiers such as non-linear SVM and neural networks can construct complex decision boundaries, they tend to be required complex operations. The proposed method uses a series of linear classifiers to solve a pattern classification problem with arbitrary decision boundaries. Designing a linear classifier is equivalent to finding a weight vector. Thus, designing a linear classifier can be formulated as finding a point in the weight space. In this paradigm, a training sample introduces a plane in the weight space. On one side of the plane, the training sample is correctly classified while it is incorrectly classified on the other side. Thus, a set of training samples will divide the weight space into several subspaces. For each subspace, a confusion matrix is computed, and the proposed slice classifier finds a series of subspaces, whose confusion matrices have a column with a zero non-diagonal element. Experimental results show that the proposed slice classifier can solve classification problems with complex decision boundaries with a series of linear classifiers with low complexity.

Edge Detection Using the Bhattacharyya Distance with Adjustable Block Space

In this paper, we propose a new edge detection method for color images, based on the Bhattacharyya distance with adjustable block space. First, the Wiener filter was used to remove the noise as pre-processing. To calculate the Bhattacharyya distance, a pair of blocks were extracted for each pixel. To detect subtle edges, we adjusted the block space. The mean vector and covariance matrix were computed from each block. Using the mean vectors and covariance matrices, we computed the Bhattacharyya distance, which was used to detect edges. By adjusting the block space, we were able to detect weak edges, which other edge detections failed to detect. Experimental results show promising results compared to some existing edge detection methods.

Hydrate Phase Equilibria of the Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Water System

Three-phase equilibria for the carbon dioxide + methane + water system were obtained by employing the isobaric temperature search method. Based on these isobaric hydrate equilibrium studies, the ternary hydrate, water-rich liquid, and vapor equilibrium lines generated at different compositions of carbon dioxide and methane were all located between two three-phase equilibrium lines of simple hydrates formed by a single guest component. The upper quadruple points where the four phases hydrate, water-rich liquid, CO2-rich liquid, and vapor coexist were measured for the composition range of 100−82.50 mol % carbon dioxide. Below 82.50 mol % carbon dioxide, the upper quadruple points do not exist because none of the components in the vapor phase, neither methane nor carbon dioxide, is able to liquefy at these conditions. In addition, two-phase equilibria of vapor and hydrate were also determined at the three different pressures 20, 26, and 35 bar. Judging from the resulting T−x diagram, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the hydrate phase was found to be higher than 90 mol % when the corresponding equilibrium vapor-phase composition was more than 40 mol % carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide concentration and relative selectivity over methane in the hydrate phase appeared to increase with decreasing pressure.

Role of Cation–Water Disorder during Cation Exchange in Small-Pore Zeolite Sodium Natrolite

By combining X-ray diffraction with oxygen K-edge absorption spectroscopy we track changes occurring during the K+–Na+ cation exchange of Na-natrolite (Na-NAT) as tightly bonded Na+ cations and H2O molecules convert into a disordered K+–H2O substructure and the unit cell expands by ca. 10% after 50% cation exchange. The coordination of the confined H2O and nonframework cations change from a tetrahedral configuration, similar in ice Ih, with Na+ near the middle of the channels in Na-NAT to two-bonded configuration, similar in bulk water, and K+ located near the walls of the framework in K-NAT. This is related to the enhanced ion-exchange properties of K-NAT, which, in marked contrast to Na-NAT, permits the exchange of K+ by a variety of uni-, di-, and trivalent cations.
