Increasing Reach of the Diabetes Prevention Program in African American Churches: Project FIT Lessons Learned in Using an Interprofessional Student Service-Learning Approach.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is an evidence-based lifestyle intervention proven to reduce/delay diabetes onset with diet change, physical activity, and modest weight loss. However, access to the program is limited in low-resource communities. Having health profession students facilitate DPP groups as a service learning course-credit opportunity may benefit their interprofessional training while also expanding DPP access in underserved communities. We sought to use student reflections to identify themes to assist with program evaluation and to inform program refinements. Students (N=95) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) medical, physician assistant, and pharmacy programs led DPP groups in urban Kansas City African American churches alongside church health liaisons as part of an interprofessional service-learning course. Students reported creating satisfying, ongoing relationships with participants; developing a deeper understanding of obstacles to weight loss; and learning the role of other health professionals in the care of patients. They also identified obstacles to successful program implementation, such as needing less time in training and having equal participation from students across their interprofessional teams. Students learned important lessons by leading the DPP, but interprofessional service-learning courses have multiple obstacles to successful delivery. Still, this approach has great potential to increase access to the DPP in African American communities and promote skill development in health profession students.

A Social Norms Approach to Reducing Alcohol Consumption Among College Freshmen

The social norms media approach is an intervention designed to change college students’ drinking behavior by correcting false perceptions through normative feedback. The present study is a preliminary assessment of a social norms intervention’s attempt to decrease drinking amounts in students making the transition to university life. Data were collected on three groups of first-year students: (a) spring 1999 for baseline freshmen drinking norms, (b) summer 1999 to assess incoming freshmen drinking patterns, and (c) spring 2000 as a follow-up to assess effectiveness of the intervention for freshmen who entered fall 1999. Results indicated that the majority of freshmen students consistently drank in a moderate range (0–5 drinks), yet consistently overestimated their peers’ drinking levels. Incoming freshmen had significantly higher levels of drinking and greater misperceptions than baseline university freshmen. Results suggest the drinking rates significantly decreased for incoming freshmen from summer 1999 compared to spring 2000 follow-up norms. Also, the results suggest that normative feedback on college students’ drinking may be needed at the high school level to correct faulty perceptions prior to entering a university environment.

Dietary Intake Among Church-Affiliated African Americans: The Role of Intentions and Beliefs

Diabetes and heart disease disproportionately burden African Americans, who tend to have worse nutritional intake than Whites. Many Black churches are influential institutions in the Black community, with potential to assist with promotion of healthy eating behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine intention to eat a healthy diet and dietary behaviors among church-affiliated African Americans. It was hypothesized that TPB constructs would positively predict intention to eat a healthy diet and that intention to eat a healthy diet would be a predictor of fat and fruit and vegetable intake. It was also hypothesized that control beliefs would predict reduced fat intake and increased fruit and vegetable intake. Path analyses indicated behavioral, normative, and control beliefs were predictive of intention to eat a healthy diet. Intention to eat healthy was a significant predictor of dietary intake behaviors. These findings provide support for the use of the TPB in examining diet among church-affiliated African Americans. This study represents an opportunity to inform dietary interventions for the African American faith community.

Engaging Church Leaders in a Health Needs Assessment Process to Design a Multilevel Health Promotion Intervention in Low-resource Rural Jamaican Faith Communities

Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are major Jamaican public health issues. Churches may be untapped settings to extend reach and impact of diabetes and CVD prevention programs, particularly in low-resourced, rural Jamaican areas. We engaged the Jamaican Lifestyles Health Ministry Association Community Action Board in designing and conducting a health needs assessment (HNA) process to identify health conditions, priority health concerns, and potentially relevant intervention strategies to address concerns with their church-community members in rural areas. Findings from the HNA process (survey and community forum) were used by faith leaders to guide the design of a culturally-religiously tailored, multilevel diabetes/CVD risk reduction intervention, Project Faith Influencing Transformation (FIT)-Jamaica (JA). Use of HNA and collaborative intervention design processes were key to successfully completing the design of a faith-based health promotion intervention in JA churches in a timely manner.

Feasibility of the MIND+SOUL Culturally Tailored Brain Healthy Diet: A Pilot Study

Alzheimer's disease (AD) disproportionately impacts Black Americans, who are three times more likely to develop AD. While heart-healthy diets have shown potential in reducing AD risk, research on adapted dietary interventions for Black American communities remains limited. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted brain healthy diet intervention (MIND + SOUL) and explored changes in cardiometabolic risk and cognition. Twenty-nine participants completed the 12-week intervention, which included culturally tailored health education, cooking classes, health coaching, and groceries. Feasibility was assessed by attendance and retention rates, while acceptability was measured by two questionnaires. Participants had a mean age of 70.3, with 10.3% male. The intervention demonstrated high feasibility (89.3% retention) and acceptability (mean = 71.9, SD = 8.59), with meaningful improvements in body mass index (estimate = -0.54,

An HIV Testing Intervention in African American Churches: Pilot Study Findings

Background African Americans are disproportionately burdened by HIV. The African American church is an influential institution with potential to increase reach of HIV prevention interventions in Black communities. Purpose This study examined HIV testing rates in African American churches in the Taking It to the Pews pilot project. Using a community-engaged approach, church leaders delivered religiously-tailored HIV education and testing materials/activities (e.g., sermons, brochures/bulletins, testimonials) to church and community members. Methods Four African American churches (N=543 participants) located in the Kansas City metropolitan area were randomized to intervention and comparison groups. Receipt of an HIV test was assessed at baseline and 6 months. Results Findings indicated intervention participants were 2.2 times more likely to receive an HIV test than comparisons at 6 months. Church leaders delivered about 2 tools per month. Conclusions Church-based HIV testing interventions are feasible and have potential to increase HIV testing rates in African American communities.
