HST/FGS High-Speed Photometric Observations of Transits of HD 209458b

We present preliminary analysis of new HST observations of the transiting extrasolar planet HD 209458b. Photometric observations were obtained with the Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), providing milli-mag precision and high time resolution (40 Hz). The FGS photometry allows us to derive precise stellar/orbital parameters (ephemeris, inclination, limb darkening) and planetary radius, and also allows a search for the presence of planetary rings and satellites. We discuss preliminary results and two approaches to modelling the observations.

Generalized Attracting Horseshoe in the Rössler Attractor

We show that there is a mildly nonlinear three-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations - realizable by a rather simple electronic circuit - capable of producing a generalized attracting horseshoe map. A system specifically designed to have a Poincar\'{e} section yielding the desired map is described, but not pursued due to its complexity, which makes the construction of a circuit realization exceedingly difficult. Instead, the generalized attracting horseshoe and its trapping region is obtained by using a carefully chosen Poincar\'{e} map of the R\"{o}ssler attractor. Novel numerical techniques are employed to iterate the map of the trapping region to approximate the chaotic strange attractor contained in the generalized attracting horseshoe, and an electronic circuit is constructed to produce the map. Several potential applications of the idea of a generalized attracting horseshoe and a physical electronic circuit realization are proposed.

Enhancing NGST Science: UMBRAS

We present a preliminary free-flying occulter design using existing technology to move in formation with NGST, the Umbral Mission Blocking Radiating Astronomical Sources (UMBRAS). The purpose of the occulter is to reduce and redistribute light entering NGST. UMBRAS enhances the contrast between faint objects and bright sources allowing planet searches by imaging within a few tenths of an arcsecond of nearby stars. The occulting spacecraft would range from thousands to tens of thousands of kilometers from NGST using solar electric propulsion. Operational constraints for UMBRAS are compatible with NGST. Observing rates between a few dozen and a hundred targets per year with mission lifetimes of 2-6 years are achievable.

Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST): A Technology Roadmap for the Next Decade

The Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) is a set of mission concepts for the next generation of UVOIR space observatory with a primary aperture diameter in the 8-m to 16-m range that will allow us to perform some of the most challenging observations to answer some of our most compelling questions, including "Is there life elsewhere in the Galaxy?" We have identified two different telescope architectures, but with similar optical designs, that span the range in viable technologies. The architectures are a telescope with a monolithic primary mirror and two variations of a telescope with a large segmented primary mirror. This approach provides us with several pathways to realizing the mission, which will be narrowed to one as our technology development progresses. The concepts invoke heritage from HST and JWST design, but also take significant departures from these designs to minimize complexity, mass, or both. Our report provides details on the mission concepts, shows the extraordinary scientific progress they would enable, and describes the most important technology development items. These are the mirrors, the detectors, and the high-contrast imaging technologies, whether internal to the observatory, or using an external occulter. Experience with JWST has shown that determined competitors, motivated by the development contracts and flight opportunities of the new observatory, are capable of achieving huge advances in technical and operational performance while keeping construction costs on the same scale as prior great observatories.

The Science Performance of JWST as Characterized in Commissioning

Abstract This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through observations spanning from near-earth asteroids to the most distant galaxies.

Planning and Scheduling External Occulter Space Missions

This paper introduces the reader to a new class of space science missions employing a telescope and one or more mobile external occulters. Issues important for proper science and mission planning are discussed in light of the inherent mission constraints. Recommendations for software to analyze and optimize mission efficiency and construct integrated long-range plans are provided.
