Coherent Control of High Harmonic Generation via Dual-Gas Multijet Arrays

High harmonic generation (HHG) is a central driver of the rapidly growing field of ultrafast science. We present a novel quasiphase-matching (QPM) concept with a dual-gas multijet target leading, for the first time, to remarkable phase control between multiple HHG sources (>2) within the Rayleigh range. The alternating jet structure with driving and matching zones shows perfect coherent buildup for up to six QPM periods. Although not in the focus of the proof-of-principle studies presented here, we achieved competitive conversion efficiencies already in this early stage of development.

Effect of laser contrast ratio on electron beam stability in laser wakefield acceleration experiments

Laser wakefield accelerators offer the possibility of compact electron acceleration. However one of the key outstanding issues with the results reported to date is the electron beam stability. Experiments on two laser systems reveal that the contrast ratio between the ASE pedestal and main pulse is an important factor in determining the quality of the electron beam. With a high contrast ratio (108) the electron beam profile is a well collimated single beam having a low pointing instability (<10 mrad rms). With a lower contrast (106) the beam profile contains multiple beamlets which exhibit a large pointing instability (≃50 mrad rms). A high contrast ratio not only improves the beam pointing stability (≃6 mrad) but also stabilizes the electron beam energy reproducibility (5%).

Laser-Driven Acceleration of Electrons in a Partially Ionized Plasma Channel

The generation of quasimonoenergetic electron beams, with energies up to 200 MeV, by a laser-plasma accelerator driven in a hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide is investigated. Injection and acceleration of electrons is found to depend sensitively on the delay between the onset of the discharge current and the arrival of the laser pulse. A comparison of spectroscopic and interferometric measurements suggests that injection is assisted by laser ionization of atoms or ions within the channel.

Laser-plasma electron acceleration in dielectric capillary tubes

Electron beams and betatron X-ray radiation generated by laser wakefield acceleration in long plasma targets are studied. The targets consist of hydrogen filled dielectric capillary tubes of diameter 150 to 200 microns and length 6 to 20 mm. Electron beams are observed for peak laser intensities as low as 5×1017 W/cm2. It is found that the capillary collects energy outside the main peak of the focal spot and contributes to keep the beam self-focused over a distance longer than in a gas jet of similar density. This enables the pulse to evolve enough to reach the threshold for wavebreaking, and thus trap and accelerate electrons. No electrons were observed for capillaries of large diameter (250 μm), confirming that the capillary influences the interaction and does not have the same behaviour as a gas cell. Finally, X-rays are used as a diagnostic of the interaction and, in particular, to estimate the position of the electrons trapping point inside the capillary.

Controlling the spectrum of x-rays generated in a laser-plasma accelerator by tailoring the laser wavefront

By tailoring the wavefront of the laser pulse used in a laser-wakefield accelerator, we show that the properties of the x-rays produced due to the electron beam’s betatron oscillations in the plasma can be controlled. By creating a wavefront with coma, we find that the critical energy of the synchrotronlike x-ray spectrum can be significantly increased. The coma does not substantially change the energy of the electron beam, but does increase its divergence and produces an energy-dependent exit angle, indicating that changes in the x-ray spectrum are due to an increase in the electron beam's oscillation amplitude within the wakefield.

Bidirectional jet formation during driven magnetic reconnection in two-beam laser–plasma interactions

Measurements of the bidirectional plasma jets that form at the surface of a solid target during a laser-generated driven magnetic reconnection are presented. Resistivity enhancement of at least 25× the classical Spitzer value is required when applying the Sweet–Parker model of reconnection to reconcile the experimentally observed reconnection time scale. Analytic calculations show that a fast reconnection model, which includes a priori the effects of microturbulent resistivity enhancement, better reproduces the experimental observations.

High Repetition Rate mJ-level Few-Cycle Pulse Laser Amplifier for XUV-FEL seeding

Ultra-fast laser sources have revolutionized many fields in science. As technology improves, new applications can be made accessible. The OPCPA technique has shown potential to be the key technology for future amplifier systems, but hasn’t achieved a breakthrough such as Ti:Sapphire laser technology, mostly due to the complex pump amplifier design. We present an operationally stable OPCPA system that might turn the tide for OPCPA technology. This first prototype system will be used in the accelerator environment at the FLASH free electron laser at DESY in Hamburg. The envisioned key parameters for this amplifier are >1 mJ pulse energy with a repetition rate of 100 kHz and a pulse duration of <7 fs.
