Promoting Solar‐driven Hydrogen Peroxide Production over Thiazole‐based Conjugated Polymers via Generating and Converting Singlet Oxygen

Solar-driven synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) from water and air provides a low-cost and eco-friendly alternative route to the traditional anthraquinone method. Herein, four thiazole-based conjugated polymers (Tz-CPs: TTz, BTz, TBTz and BBTz) are synthesized via aldimine condensation. BBTz exhibits the highest H2 O2 production rate of 7274 μmol g-1 h-1 in pure water. Further, the reaction path is analyzed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and theoretical calculation, highlighting the prominent role of singlet oxygen (1 O2 ). The generation of 1 O2 occurs through the oxidation of superoxide radical (⋅O2- ) and subsequent conversion into endoperoxides via [4+2] cycloaddition over BBTz, which promotes charge separation and reduces the barrier for H2 O2 production. This work provides new insight into the mechanism of photocatalytic O2 reduction and the molecular design of superior single-polymer photocatalysts.

Hierarchically Nanostructured α-Fe₂O₃ Hollow Spheres: Preparation, Growth Mechanism, Photocatalytic Property, and Application in Water Treatment

α-Fe2O3 hierarchically nanostructured hollow spheres assembled by nanosheets were prepared by thermal decomposition of a precursor which was obtained using FeCl3·6H2O, NaOH, and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate in the solvent ethylene glycol by a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method. The growth process of the precursor was investigated. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Because of the unique hierarchically nanostructured hollow structures composed of nanosheets, the photocatalytic property and potential application in water treatment of the α-Fe2O3 samples were also investigated.

Abstract We have developed a simple microwave-assisted solvothermal method for the preparation of SnO2 and ZnO hierarchically nanostructured spheres self-assembled by nanocrystals. The photocatalytic activity is significantly enhanced by simply mixing SnO2 and ZnO nanostructured spheres without any treatment or processing.

Monodisperse α-Fe2O3 Mesoporous Microspheres: One-Step NaCl-Assisted Microwave-Solvothermal Preparation, Size Control and Photocatalytic Property

A simple one-step NaCl-assisted microwave-solvothermal method has been developed for the preparation of monodisperse α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres. In this approach, Fe(NO3)3 · 9H2O is used as the iron source, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) acts as a surfactant in the presence of NaCl in mixed solvents of H2O and ethanol. Under the present experimental conditions, monodisperse α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres can form via oriented attachment of α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals. One of the advantages of this method is that the size of α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres can be adjusted in the range from ca. 170 to ca. 260 nm by changing the experimental parameters. High photocatalytic activities in the degradation of salicylic acid are observed for α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres with different specific surface areas.

Phase‐Transformation‐Induced Giant Deformation in Thermoelectric Ag₂Se Semiconductor

Abstract In most semiconducting metal chalcogenides, a large deformation is usually accompanied by a phase transformation, while the deformation mechanism remains largely unexplored. Herein, a phase‐transformation‐induced deformation in Ag 2 Se is investigated by in situ transmission electron microscopy, and a new ordered high‐temperature phase (named as α ′‐Ag 2 Se) is identified. The SeSe bonds are folded when the Ag + ‐ion vacancies are ordered and become stretched when these vacancies are disordered. Such a stretch/fold of the SeSe bonds enables a fast and large deformation occurring during the phase transition. Meanwhile, the different SeSe bonding states in α‐, α ′‐, β‐Ag 2 Se phases lead to the formation of a large number of nanoslabs and the high concentration of dislocations at the interface, which flexibly accommodate the strain caused by the phase transformation. This study reveals the atomic mechanism of the deformation in Ag 2 Se inorganic semiconductors during the phase transition, which also provides inspiration for understanding the phase transition process in other functional materials.

A Single Cu-Center Containing Enzyme-Mimic Enabling Full Photosynthesis under CO₂ Reduction

Polymeric carbon nitride (CN) is one of the most promising metal-free photocatalysts to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Loading cocatalysts is regarded as an effective way to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of CNs. However, commonly used noble metal cocatalysts limit their applications due to their rarity and high cost. Herein, we present the effective synthesis of single-atom copper-modified CN via supramolecular preorganization with subsequent condensation, which provides effective charge transfer pathways by an "infused" delocalized state with variable-valence catalysis at the same time. The C-Cu-N2 single-atom catalytic site can activate CO2 molecules and reduces the energy barrier toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Excellent performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction was found. This work thereby provides a general protocol of designing a noble-metal-free photocatalyst with infused metal centers toward a wide range of applications.

Effects of the preparation method on the structure and the visible-light photocatalytic activity of Ag₂CrO₄

Silver chromate (Ag 2 CrO 4 ) photocatalysts are prepared by microemulsion, precipitation, and hydrothermal methods, in order to investigate the effect of preparation methods on the structure and the visible-light photocatalytic activity. It is found that the photocatalytic activity of the prepared Ag 2 CrO 4 was highly dependent on the preparation methods. The sample prepared by microemulsion method exhibits the highest photocatalytic efficiency on the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible-light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the smaller particle size, higher surface area, relatively stronger light absorption, and blue-shift absorption edge, which result in the adsorption of more MB molecules, a shorter diffusion process of more photogenerated excitons, and a stronger oxidation ability of the photogenerated holes. Considering the universalities of microemulsion, precipitation, and hydrothermal methods, this work may also provide a prototype for the comparative study of semiconductor based photocatalysis for water purification and environmental remediation.
