Growth Performance, Productivity and Carbon Sequestration of Wheat (Triticum assstivum)- Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo) based Agri-silviculture System with Especial Reference to Tree Pruning Intensities and Agronomic Practices

The experiment was carried out at Akshayvat farm, Village- Arai, Block- Karchana, Allahabad during the year 2016- 2017. In agrisilviculture system, canopy management like pruning is an essential silvicultural management practice for reducing both above and below ground competition with associated crop. The experiment consists of five pruning intensities viz: no pruning, 20% pruning, 40% pruning, 60% pruning, 80% pruning and one open condition (no tree crop only) in main plot and three levels of fertilizer doses and seed rate viz; F1- recommended dose of fertilizer and seed rate, F2- 25% more nitrogen then recommended dose of fertilizer and F3- 25 % more seed rate than recommended dose of seed in sub plot under three replications. The results revealed that wheat under open condition recorded significantly higher germination percentage (86.30%), plant height (64.15cm),number of tillers (94.12), fresh wt. (954.49gm), dry wt.(372.19 gm), grain yield (25.03 q ha-1), fixed carbon (23.21%) and carbon sequestration (4.34.0 t ha-1) as compared to no pruning. In different levels of fertilizer doses and seed rate maximum plant height (64.08cm), number of tillers (92.02), fresh wt. (918.40gm), dry wt.(356.77 gm), grain yield (23.52 q ha-1) and carbon sequestration (3.57 t ha-1) was significantly higher under F2 (more nitrogen than recommended dose) as compared to F1 treatment. At age of 11 years, Dalbergia sissoo in 20% pruning gave higher tree height (11.64 m), basal area (0.089 m2), volume (0.49 m3 tree-1), and carbon sequestration (191.54 kg tree-1) as compared to other treatments. In agronomical management practices, 25% more nitrogen then recommended dose (F2) recorded significantly higher stand biomass (299.03 kg tree-1) over other treatments.

Honeybees and their management in India /

A wide array of people are attracted to the fascinating world of honeybees, especially because they provide honey and also on account of their interesting ways of life.Somehow, research on honeybees in tropical and sub-tropical regions, including India, did not receive much attention in the past.It is only recently that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has taken up the task of organized and systematic research in apiculture.The beekeeping practices for domesticated Indian honeybee, Apis cerana indica F. were adopted from the west with suitable modifications suiting to Indian honeybee.There is need to undertake intensive research for the refinement of management practices for improved honey yield and efficient pollination of crops.Production of other valuable hive products like royal jelly, beeswax and bee venom needs commercialization.There is a great diversity in regional agroclimatic conditions and flora.Therefore, for taking up beekeeping, there is a need to carry out some careful studies to explore the potential of each area.In the process of controlling pests through the use of chemicals, the wild insect pollinators are under threat of being wiped out and, thus, the honeybees are equally endangered.Thus, the peasants and farmers in India will be deprived of the additional food and income through pollination services by these insects.The situation is grave because in India there is lesser awareness than in technologically advanced countries of the need to protect these insects from pesticidal hazards.Honeybee genetics and breeding has remained a neglected area of research.Well-organized and concerted efforts in the field are urgently required.At present, 7 species of genus Apis are known to exist and these species are known to have diverse races and strains.The artificial queen bee insemination technique could not be exploited to maintain the germplasm and also for the improvement of stock.Apis mellifera L. was introduced from abroad and established in India in sixties and has revolutionized the commercial beekeeping in the north-western states.The extension of the species to other potential states of the country has somehow been delayed.The sweet revolution should be attempted through popularization of Apis mellifera for commercial beekeeping, since the species is far superior in performance to Apis cerana indica.The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is engaged in research and development activities in various disciplines of agriculture including apiculture.The book Beekeeping in India by Dr Sardar Singh .waspublished in 1962.This book served as a practical treatise for popularizing modern beekeeping in India.Since the publication of the book, a wealth of knowledge has been generated both in India and other countries.Therefore, the need arose to bring out a book with up-to-date information.I appreciate the efforts made by Dr R.C.

The Effect of Mode of Pollination onAlliumSpecies with Observation on Insects as Pollinators

SummaryAt two sites in Himachal Pradesh, India, seed set, seed weight and seed germination were compared for 3 Allium species which were open-pollinated, enclosed in nylon cages or covered with cloth bags. Seed set and germination were significantly higher in open-pollinated than in caged umbels, but there was no significant difference between treatments for mean weight of 100 seeds. The Indian honeybee, Apis cerana indica, was the most frequent insect visitor. Of the three onion species, Allium cepa was preferred by insect visitors over Allium fistulosum and Allium cepa fistulosum. Apis dorsata foraged exclusively for nectar, but although most Apis cerana collected nectar, a small percentage collected both nectar and pollen. The amounts of pollen adhering to the bodies of foraging insects varied greatly, honeybees carrying significantly larger amounts than all other insect species except Eristalis tenax.

Effect of removal of primary branches on the grain size and yield of sorghum

Analysis of data on grain yield/plant, 1000-grain weight and grain number/panicle in 6 sorghum genotypes with 0, 10, 15 or 20 primary branches removed from the panicle indicated that removal of 10 to 15 primary branches gave an increase in grain size without a significant decline in grain number or yield. It is suggested that in handling segregating material, selection could be based on bolder grains with slightly fewer grains/panicle.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In trials with 6 sorghum cv., the removal of 10-15 primary branches randomly from a panicle soon after its emergence decreased the number of grains but increased their size; grain yield was not decreased. Varietal performance of Peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] under northern hill zone of Chhattisgarh

Peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] is one of the most important temperate stone fruit belong to the family rosaceae and sub family Prunoidae is widely held to state a distinct group of cultivar which require low chilling hours for bud brust and growth is known as low chill peach. In northern hill zone of Chhattisgarh hilly tract of Mainpat (Surguja) Samri & Jokapat in Balrampur and Pendrapat area in Jushpur district has been agro-ecological situation for growth of fruit chilling in peach. Seven peach cultivars viz; Shan-e-Punjab, Flordaprince, Pratap, Early Grand, Glow heaven, Suncrist and Punjab red (Nacterin) were cultivated for evaluation purposes to come up with a suitable cultivar for commercial production under hilly zone condition of Chhattisgarh, India. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 3 replications at Potato & Temperate Horticulture Research Station, Mainpat, Surguja, Chhattisgarh in the year 2016-17. The result revealed that the early bearing cultivars were Punjab red (Nectarine), Pratap, Early grand and Flordaprince gave potential yield on last week of April-May. Stone weight was minimum in Punjab red (Nectarine) 13.96g which gave 57.33g pulp but highest pulp: stone ratio (6.38) in Early grand with pulp weight was (79.40g) followed by cultivar Shan-e-Punjab (5.03) with pulp weight 62.39g. The maximum TSS was observed in cultivar Early Grand (18.860B) being comparable with Floridaprince (17.530B) statistically. Lowest acidity found in Early grand (0.18%) followed by Shan-e-Punjab (0.22%) and Pratap (0.23%). Ascorbic acid found highest in variety Punjab red (Nectarine) 164.33mg/kg followed by Shan-e-Punjab (124.33mg/kg) and Pratap (112.25mg/kg). Reducing sugar found highest in the variety Shan-e-Punjab (7.40%) and highest total sugar found in early grand. The cultivar Punjab Red (Nectarine) gave yield 23.5 Kg per tree followed by Pratap (15.85kg) and Early Grand (14.25kg) per tree. From the present study it is concluded that vigorous and spreading type peach cv. Punjab Red (Nectarine) was the best performer followed by Pratap and Shan-e-Punjab under northern hill zone Chhattisgarh for commercial cultivation

Constraints faced by farmers in canal command areas of upper Krishna project

The farmers in the command areas play a vital role in water management in the command areas. The system of water distribution, cropping pattern and quantity of water allocated depends on the farmers living in the region. Understanding such values of water is very important among stakeholders for efficient allocation of basin water resources. Both primary and secondary data were used for the study. The secondary data on area coverage of different crops grown in both the project command areas was obtained from CADA Bheemarayanagudi, Karnataka. Primary data was collected from 200 respondents from head and tail regions of Almatti Left Bank Canal (ALBC), Indi Branch Canal (IBC), Narayanpur Left Bank Canal (NLBC) and Narayanpur Right Bank Canal (NRBC). The data was analyzed using the Garrette ranking technique. It may be concluded that regular meetings should be organized among the farmers and the officials of irrigation department/CADA to study the problems faced by farmers and find possible solutions and adequate representation should be made to small and medium farmers from backward communities in the WUAs Thus there can be a better and equitable distribution of water if farmers are having appropriate training and capacity building.

Genetic analysis of grain size and other characteristics of sorghum

Data are tabulated on general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects for yield/plant, 1000-grain weight and 3 plant characters studied in a diallel cross, excluding reciprocals, of 6 lines. GCA and SCA effects were significant for all traits. E35-1 was the best combiner among the parents. E35-1 X Vidisha 60-1 and E35-1 X GJ108 were identified as desirable crosses for grain yield and 1000-grain weight, respectively
