Air quality in urban areas continues to represent a major concern, taking into account the impact of pollution on environment and human health. Air quality study involves researchers of several scientific disciplines and requires the development of theoretical, practical and methodological concepts, always new, for understanding, controlling and combating urban air pollution. Together with monitoring, modeling air pollution is a very important tool in the management of air quality. It enables efficient verification in order to reduce emissions and make prediction of pollution levels associated with changes in urban infrastructure.

Applying Project Based Learning in Engineering Subjects at La Trobe University, Melbourne

The research and associated literature review contained within this paper provides an overview of Project Based Learning (PjBL) methods globally and its current application in La Trobe University Engineering degrees. The team involved in the project conducted a literature review of PjBL methodologies used in various universities, encompassing descriptions of assessment, the impact reported on students, academics or university, and the challenges encountered. Following the systematic review and taking into account the variety of the methods analysed, a tool to assess the level of PjBL in a subject was created, formed around undergraduate engineering degrees at La Trobe University in Melbourne. Engineering subjects implemented within the La Trobe University Engineering degrees have considerable PjBL elements and have increased the prevalence of contemporary pedagogical approaches (including PjBL) in the degree structure. Abstract and non-specific engineering subjects involving innovation and entrepreneurship have become more prevalent in the La Trobe Engineering structure.. The assessment tool was then applied for three case studies with various levels of PjBL, developed at La Trobe University, Department of Engineering.

Characterization of traffic-generated pollutants in Bucharest

European Union Council directive 96/62/EC on ambient air quality assessment and management requires the development of action plans for zones where the concentrations of pollutants in ambient air exceed limit values. In the urban areas the limit values are exceeded, especially due to the traffic. In this paper, we analyzed the temporal variability levels of concentration of NOX, O3 and SO2 in two street canyons. The distribution of concentrations proves that traffic is the most important source of NO X , this pollutant being emitted during running of the vehicle engines. The level of pollution within U2 street is 25% less than U1 street, even though the measured traffic within U2 street is 50% less than within U1 street. This happen because the streets geometry and locations are different.

POLLUTANT DISPERSION MODELLING WITH OSPM IN A STREET CANYON FROM BUCHAREST

In urban areas, where the population is very numerous and the traffic is relatively high, the exposure of people to the traffic related concentrations is significant. The aim of this study is to evaluate the predictions derived from the Danish Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM) when the input data are obtained by simple measure methods. Pollution concentrations, temperature, flow and turbulence conditions were measured in Bucharest, Bd. Dacia, for different periods of year. The background concentrations ware obtained using the OML model. Measurements are compared to model results which reproduce reasonably well the observed distribution of pollutants in the street. The results indicate that the OSPM data might be useful in assessing long-term exposure to air pollutants in epidemiological studies.
