Optimization and modelling of volatile fatty acid generation in a leachate bed reactor for utilization in microbial fuel cells

Abstract Volatile fatty acid (VFA)‐rich leachate generated from acidogenesis of kitchen waste in a leach bed reactor (LBR) was utilized in an earthen microbial fuel cell (EMFC) to generate electricity. Effects of organic loading rate (OLR, 5–10 g VS/L·day) and pH (5–7) on LBR enumerated optimized parameters of OLR (10 g VS/L·day) and pH (5.74) to obtain total VFA (TVFA) of 7.7 ± 0.3 g/L in the leachate, with maximum contribution from acetic acid. Leachate obtained from the LBR was fed to the EMFC with varying OLR (2–7 kg COD/m 3 ·day). The highest power density of 0.76 W/m 3 (at OLR 7 kg COD/m 3 ·day) was obtained with higher VFA content in the leachate. A neural network based on the Levenberg–Marquard function effectively predicted chemical oxygen demand and TVFA removal. This study establishes LBR as a techno‐economic method to obtain useful substrate for EMFC. Furthermore, the response modelling of EMFC demonstrates the potential of utilizing machine learning in biological treatment.

Greywater treatment in SBR-SND reactor - optimization of hydraulic retention time, volumetric exchange ratio and sludge retention time

In this study, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification-sequencing batch reactor (SND-SBR) process was investigated to treat greywater. The effect of three process parameters, including hydraulic retention time (HRT), volumetric exchange ratio (VER) and sludge retention time (SRT), was optimised using a 23 full factorial design. The statistic model was developed for two response variables, i.e. chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia (NH3-N) removal. The optimum conditions were 6.8 h HRT (anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic: 1.77 h/2.77 h/2.27 h), 0.7 VER and 7.94 d SRT, which resulted in 93.9% COD and 84.6% NH3-N removal efficiency. SRT was the most significant factor, followed by HRT and VER for COD and NH3-N removal. The interaction effect of VER and SRT was significant in COD removal. On the other hand, the interaction effects of HRT-VER and HRT-SRT were significant in NH3-N removal. The removal efficiencies of 89.6 ± 1.1% and 83.7 ± 2.3% were observed for TKN and TN, respectively, in the optimised SND-SBR system. NH3-N removal was obtained via nitrate pathway in the SND-SBR system. The PO43--P removal of 74.2 ± 3.4% was obtained via aerobic phosphorus uptake and post anoxic denitrification at the optimal condition. To enhance PO43--P removal, adsorption (using corn cob adsorbent) was integrated with SBR by adding the optimum adsorbent dose (0.5 g/L). The PO43--P removal efficiency in the SBR-adsorption system was found to be 80 ± 1.5%. The biodegradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) was also carried out in the SND-SBR system, and the results showed removal rate of 58.9 ± 2.3% benzophenone-3 (BP) and 80.1 ± 2.2% anionic surfactant (AS).

EFFECT OF SULFATE CONCENTRATION IN THE WASTEWATER ON MICROBIAL FUEL CELL PERFORMANCE

The effect of presence of sulfate in wastewater on the wastewater treatment efficiency and electricity harvesting capacity of microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been studied in two identical dual chambered MFCs (MFC-1 and MFC-2) at different COD/SO 4 2ratio in synthetic wastewater with sucrose as a carbon source.The MFCs were operated under batch mode at feed cycle time of 48 h.Performance of MFC-1 was evaluated under different COD/SO 4 2-ratio of 500, 20, 1, 0.8, 0.5, and 0.3.To understand the reproducibility of the results, experiments with certain COD/SO 4 2-ratio in the feed (20, 1, 0.5, and 0.3) were repeated in the MFC-2.Increase in COD removal and power production was observed with decrease in COD/SO 4 2-ratio up to 0.8 in the wastewater.Both the MFCs demonstrated similar performances when operated at the similar COD/SO 4 2-ratio.Increase in COD removal and power production was observed with decrease in COD/SO 4 2-ratio up to 0.8 in the wastewater.MFC-1 demonstrated highest COD removal efficiency of 79% and power density and volumetric power of 97.2 mW/m 2 and 1136.8 mW/m 3 , respectively, at the COD/SO 4 2-ratio of 0.8.The highest Coulombic efficiency and energetic efficiency were 7.36% and 15.69%, respectively, in MFC-1 at the COD/SO 4 2-ratio of 0.8.Deterioration in reactor performance was observed when the COD/SO 4 2-ratio was decreased below 0.8.

Pharmaceutical wastewater treatment in ceramic separator MFC: Optimisation of operating parameters to improve organic removal and power generation

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) can be used to simultaneously treat wastewater and generate energy using microorganisms as biocatalysts. To improve its performance, optimization of the various process variables and determination of effects of their interactions needs to be explored. In the present study, a full factorial statistical experimental design study of 11 runs was conducted to analyse the effect of influent COD (1500 – 3500 mg/L), pH (5-9) and recirculation ratio (0-1:1) on power density and COD removal efficiency while treating pharmaceutical wastewater. Statistical models were developed using full factorial design (α = 0.05, p<0.05). The main effects of the all the three factors were found to be significant on COD removal efficiency; however, the interaction effects were found to be insignificant. On the other hand, the main effects as well as the interaction effect of COD and pH were found to be significant on power density. It was predicted that the optimum COD removal efficiency of 68% and power density of 219.4 mW/m3 can be achieved in an MFC with an influent COD of 1960 mg/L and pH of 8.9 at a recirculation ratio of 0.99.

Exploring necessity to pre-treat organic fraction of waste prior to use in an earthen MFC modified with bentonite

In this study, the addition of bentonite at different proportions as clay minerals and various thicknesses (4, 5, and 6 mm) of ceramic membranes were evaluated for proton and oxygen mass transfer coefficients. Bentonite (20% and 4 mm) was found to be optimum and was then employed to assess earthen microbial fuel cell (EMFC) performance for different substrates (kitchen waste (KW) slurry and leachate) under batch mode. Both substrates were added in different concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), i.e., 18, 15.2, 12.5, 9.7, and 6.9 g/L to EMFCs. The EMFC achieved superior organic removals for leachate (>96%). Intriguingly, the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) generation and consumption were different for each substrate. Each system expressed affinity towards acetic acid, but limited VFAs (acetic and propionic) were generated by KW while leachate generated acetic, propionic, and butyric. The leachate concentration having COD of 15.2 g/L produced the highest power density of 586.5 ± 38.8 mW/m3, while for KW, only 41.5 mW/m3 (6.9 g/L of COD for KW) was obtained. The study consolidates the need for an intermediate step to pre-treat the organic fraction of waste before its use for resource recovery. Bentonite was found as an effective clay mineral for manufacturing ceramic membranes.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Removal in Different Bioelectrochemical Systems: A Review

Global industrialization has led to an alarming level of release of hazardous and toxic metals in water bodies. Disposal of wastewater containing heavy metals can have adverse impacts on human health, as well as on other components of the environment. The various conventional treatment processes used to date have many disadvantages, such as high amounts of sludge generation, chemical requirements, and cost. Bioelectrochemical systems can overcome these disadvantages and can generate renewable energy or valuable chemicals out of these wastes. Bioelectrochemical systems are processes that can convert the chemical energy derived from oxidation of waste into electrical energy. This chemical energy is derived by the microbial population present in activated sludge. This paper reviews the studies conducted on the three bioelectrochemical processes, namely a microbial fuel cell (MFC), a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), and a microbial desalination cell (MDC), to treat industrial wastewater rich in heavy metals.
