Ionic Conductivity and Thermoelectric Power of Pure and Al2 O 3 ‐ Dispersed AgI

Ionic and electronic conductivities, and thermoelectric power have been measured for and containing a dispersion of submicron size particles. While the dispersion of enhances the ionic conductivity significantly, it does not affect the electronic properties of the matrix. The enhancement is a strong function of the size and concentration of the dispersoid. Various models have been tested to account for the enhanced conduction. However, the complex behavior of the present results points out the need for more sophisticated theoretical models. Ionic conduction and thermoelectric power data suggest that the dispersed generates an excess of cation vacancies and thereby enhances the conductivity and suppresses the thermoelectric power of the matrix. The individual heats of transport of cation interstitials and vacancies have been estimated and compared to their respective migration energies.

Thermoelectric power of the superionic conductors Ag₄MI₅(M=K and Rb)

The thermoelectric power ( theta ) of Ag 4 KI 5 and Ag 4 RbI 5 is measured between room temperature and few degrees below their melting points using silver electrodes. The behaviour of theta with temperature can be expressed by the equations - theta =0.088(10 3 /T)+0.310(mVK -1 ), (40-240 degrees C) and - theta =0.086(10 3 /T)+0.338(mVK -1 ), (40-225 degrees C) respectively, for the two solids. A theoretical analysis of the data gives 0.088 and 0.086 eV for the heats of transport of Ag + ions which are very close to the respective activation energies, in accordance with the prediction of the free-ion theory of Rice and Roth (1972) as well as that of the earlier theory on the heats of transport.

Frequency Response of the Mechanochemically Synthesized AgI-Ag2O-B2O3 Superionic Glasses

The synthesis of xAgI(1-x)[Ag2O.B2O3] amorphous superionic conductors is done via mechanochemical synthesis route (for x = 0.5 and 0.7). Ionic conductivities of 3 mOhm-1cm-1 for x = 0.5 sample and 5mOhm-1cm-1 for x = 0.7 sample at room temperature, are observed, which are higher than those of the melt quenched glassy samples. Impedance plots (Nyquist plots) are found to be depressed semicircles with a tail at low frequency end. The corresponding equivalent circuit is postulated and each circuit element is related to a physical process. The ac conductivity is analyzed in view of the universal dynamic response (Bode Plots). A unique feature of the mechnochemically synthesized glasses is that their dc conductivity vs. 1/T behavior exhibit two distinct regions with different activation energies. The activation energy for dc conductivity (Edc) and that for ac conductivity (Eac) and the frequency exponent n are found to satisfy the UDR-relation, Eac= (1-n)Edc in the lower temperature regime. In the high temperature region, however, this correlation could not be established due to lack of sac data over the available frequency domain.
