В работе демонстрируется возможность идентификации областей повышенной торосистости морского льда в районах молодых и однолетних льдов по данным спутникового скаттерометра Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT).Рассмотрены основные механизмы рассеяния морского льда, ответственные за вариации значений радиолокационного сигнала.Для повышения пространственного разрешения измерений ASCAT и приведения значений удельной эффективной площади рассеяния (УЭПР) к одному углу наблюдения использовались данные ASCAT полного разрешения.Полученные среднесуточные поля нормализованных УЭПР с разрешением 5×5 км анализировались совместно с изображениями радиолокаторов с синтезированной апертурой Sentinel-1, с данными по сплочённости морского льда, восстановленными на основе измерений спутникового микроволнового радиометра Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2), и с картами морского льда Арктического и антарктического научно-исследовательского института.Продемонстрирована эффективность использования данных ASCAT для мониторинга торосов.Предложенный подход позволяет использовать данные ASCAT для изучения и оперативного мониторинга зон повышенной торосистости, масштаб которых превышает элемент пространственного разрешения скаттерометрических данных и изменчивостью которых

Wavenumber spectra of short wind waves: laboratory measurements and interpretation

Short wind-generated capillary-gravity waves were measured with a refraction-based optical technique in different wind/wave tanks. Directional wave number spectra were determined from the wave slope images for a wide range of wind speeds and fetches for the different geometries of the laboratory facilities. The shape of the wavenumber spectra and their dependence on die friction velocity and fetch were analyzed. We found that the parasitic capillaries dominate the capillary range of the spectra. The interpretation of the results is given by a physical model of the short wind-wave spectrum that takes the generation of parasitic capillaries under laboratory conditions into account.

SummaryHexavalent chromium bath replacement is a high priority pollution prevention issue. The aim of this study was to develop corrosion protective, wear resistant and environmentally safe coatings as an alternative to hard chromium electroplated from the Cr(VI) bath. Cr, Ni-P, Ni-Mo, Ni-"W"-P and Mn-Zn coatings were electrodeposited from a modified conventional or newly developed bath. Cr was electrodeposited from both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) baths, Ni-P(5–12%) alloy from an acetate bath, Ni-Mo from both ammonium citrate (with stabilizer) and methane-sulphonic baths and Ni-"W"-P from an ammonium citrate bath. The electroplating parameters, chemical composition, structure, hardness, wear resistance of the above-mentioned coatings are discussed in detail.

Surface Waves Generated by Polar Lows: Satellite Observations and Simulations

Results of investigations of surface waves generated by Polar Lows (PLs) in the Barents and Norwegian seas are presented. It is known that the PLs can generate abnormally high waves (up to 10m height) comparable to the waves in tropical cyclones (TCs). Therefore development of methods for prediction and evolution of waves under PLs is extremely important to ensure the maritime and coastal infrastructures safety in the Arctic. This study is based on the synergy of the satellite altimeter measurements of wave heights, and model simulations using a parametric wave model proposed by Kudryavtsev et al., 2021. The input parameters of the model, including atmospheric data and sea ice mask were taken from the reanalysis ERA5 and the database of the University of Bremen, respectively. Three case studies are considered for intense PLs of different type: "spiral"- and "comma"-type. Results of the model simulations are compared with the satellite altimeter measurements. Unlike TCs, wind field in PLs and their trajectory are strongly variable in space and time, and PLs' lifetime is short (from hours to days). However, despite these differences, the group velocity resonance between generating waves and moving wind field (revealed in TCs) can also be fulfilled in PLs. This mechanism leads to appearance of abnormal waves whose heights and wavelengths significantly exceed expected values following from observed wind speed and size of PL. As found, the group velocity resonance in PLs does not appear due to PL translation, but due to movement of the front in PL. Waves of high-energy are generated inside the moving front area of PL and then emitted ahead the front as swell. It is concluded that the PLs of the "comma-type" play a major role in generation of abnormally high waves in the Arctic.

In modern mechanical engineering, technical ceramics is finding increasing use. It has unique anti-corrosion properties and resistance to high temperatures. In most cases, the processing modes and characteristics of abrasive (diamond) wheels are selected experimentally, since there is no modeling of processing processes in the public domain. The article presents an experimental study of the surface of dissimilar materials under the influence of heat flow from the friction force of grinding wheel grains. The comparison of calculated indicators and the results of laboratory studies is given. It is concluded that the heat flow from the friction forces of the grains on the material does not cause the destruction of the polished surface. A simplified model for the transformation of the atmospheric planetary boundary layer overlying a thermal front in the sea

This paper discusses a simplified model for the evolution of the atmospheric planetary boundary layer overlying a thermal front in the sea. The model provides local values of the friction/heat transfer geostrophic coefficients and the direction of surface wind stress, as well as the wind/temperature profiles at any point on the front. With the running over a warm front, the baroclinicity of the internal boundary layer leads to the generation of a near-surface current of air directed down the front. The model can be used to interpret radar imagery of the sea surface with the purpose of determining its mesoscale variability.
