Hybrid LWFA–PWFA staging as a beam energy and brightness transformer: conceptual design and simulations

We present a conceptual design for a hybrid laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA) to beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA). In this set-up, the output beams from an LWFA stage are used as input beams of a new PWFA stage. In the PWFA stage, a new witness beam of largely increased quality can be produced and accelerated to higher energies. The feasibility and the potential of this concept is shown through exemplary particle-in-cell simulations. In addition, preliminary simulation results for a proof-of-concept experiment in Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (Germany) are shown. Electron trapping and reinjection in prepulse-shaped gas targets for laser-plasma accelerators

A novel mechanism for injection, emittance selection, and postacceleration for laser wakefield electron acceleration is identified and described. It is shown that a laser prepulse can create an ionized plasma filament through multiphoton ionization and this heats the electrons and ions, driving an ellipsoidal blast-wave aligned with the laser-axis. The subsequent high-intensity laser-pulse generates a plasma wakefield which, on entering the leading edge of the blast-wave structure, encounters a sharp reduction in electron density, causing density down-ramp electron injection. The injected electrons are accelerated to $\ensuremath{\sim}2\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$ within the blast-wave. After the main laser-pulse has propagated past the blast-wave, it drives a secondary wakefield within the homogenous background plasma. On exiting the blast-wave structure, the preaccelerated electrons encounter these secondary wakefields, are retrapped, and accelerated to higher energies. Due to the longitudinal extent of the blast-wave, only those electrons with small transverse velocity are retrapped, leading to the potential for the generation of electron bunches with reduced transverse size and emittance.

Experimental demonstration of novel beam characterization using a polarizable X-band transverse deflection structure

The PolariX TDS (Polarizable X-Band Transverse Deflection Structure) is an innovative TDS-design operating in the X-band frequency-range. The design gives full control of the streaking plane, which can be tuned in order to characterize the projections of the beam distribution onto arbitrary transverse axes. This novel feature opens up new opportunities for detailed characterization of the electron beam. In this paper we present first measurements of the Polarix TDS at the FLASHForward beamline at DESY, including three-dimensional reconstruction of the charge-density distribution of the bunch and slice emittance measurements in both transverse directions. The experimental results open the path toward novel and more extensive beam characterization in the direction of multi-dimensional-beam-phase-space reconstruction.

Free electron lasers driven by plasma accelerators: status and near-term prospects

Abstract Owing to their ultra-high accelerating gradients, combined with injection inside micrometer-scale accelerating wakefield buckets, plasma-based accelerators hold great potential to drive a new generation of free-electron lasers (FELs). Indeed, the first demonstration of plasma-driven FEL gain was reported recently, representing a major milestone for the field. Several groups around the world are pursuing these novel light sources, with methodology varying in the use of wakefield driver (laser-driven or beam-driven), plasma structure, phase-space manipulation, beamline design, and undulator technology, among others. This paper presents our best attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of the global community efforts towards plasma-based FEL research and development.

Polarized Electron Beams from Laser Plasma Acceleration and Their Polarimetry

In recent years, Laser Plasma Acceleration (LPA) has become a promising alternative to conventional RF accelerators. However, so far, it has only been theoretically shown that generating polarized LPA beams is possible. The LEAP (Laser Electron Acceleration with Polarization) project at DESY aims to demonstrate this experimentally for the first time, using a pre-polarized plasma target. The electron polarization will be measured with photon transmission polarimetry, which makes use of the production of circularly polarized bremsstrahlung during the passage of the electron beams through a suitable converter target. The photon polarization is then measured with the aid of transmission asymmetry arising from reversing the magnetization direction of an iron absorber. In this contribution an overview of the LEAP project is presented, detailing the generation of the polarized electron beams along with the design and simulation studies of the polarimeter.

Novel X -band transverse deflection structure with variable polarization

A collaboration between DESY, PSI and CERN has developed and built an advanced modular X-band transverse deflection structure (TDS) system with the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting force. The prototype of the novel X-band TDS, the polarizable X-band (PolariX) TDS, was fabricated at PSI following the high-precision tuning-free production process developed for the C-band Linac of the SwissFEL project. Bead-pull rf measurements were also performed at PSI to verify, in particular, that the polarization of the dipole fields does not have any rotation along the structure. The high-power test was performed at CERN and now the TDS is at DESY and has been installed in the FLASHForward beamline, where the first streaking experience with beam has been accomplished.
