Bank-Line Behaviour of the Main Rivers Located Within Sundarbans Using Digital Shoreline Analysis System

Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest located over the GBM basin, has impacted lives of millions over the years. Standing against various natural disasters, rivers of Sundarbans have undergone major issues such as erosion-accretion of both the banks. The paper deals with a combination of remote sensing and Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), studying temporal behaviour of bank-lines along the main rivers of Sundarbans for the last three decades. The course of main rivers spanning from southwest Baleswar to west Bengal Bidyadhari within coverage of 10,000 sq. km. has been analyzed in this study. DSAS, the extension tool of ArcGIS, was used for monitoring the rate-of-change from multiple historic bank-line positions extracted from satellite images. Comparison of historic bank-lines between different rivers of Sundarbans was done based on Net Bank-line Movement (NBM) with an interval of five years. Finally, the results were presented graphically to get a better understanding of the bank-line behaviour. The study revealed that the western region of mangrove prevails eroding behaviour than the eastern region. Increased rates of riverward movement due to accretion was found from 2008-2013. These results are important for future monitoring and proper management within the coastal communities surrounding the mangrove forest.

Correlation between temperature, sea level rise and land loss: An assessment along the Sundarbans coast

The geographical location of the Sundarbans, lying along the Bay of Bengal, makes it vulnerable to various natural features such as climate change, sea-level rise, reduction of fluvial input, increase of salinity, etc. Temperature around this region has been observed to be rising leading to an increase in the surface water temperature in the Bay of Bengal along the mangrove forest. As a result, the local sea-level also has been rising which has become a growing threat for this region and is expected to lead to permanent land losses either by inundation or by erosion. In this study, the extent of impacts due to temperature variations along the coastline of Sundarbans was assessed by establishing a correlation between temperature, local sea-level rise, and coastal land changes. Landsat images, spanning from 1989 to 2018 were analyzed to observe the net morphological changes along the coastline. Long-term temperature and tidal water level variations were used to check their trends and finally establish a correlation among them for better understanding.

Electricity is the pinnacle of human civilization. At present, the growing concerns over significant climatechange have intensified the importance of use of renewable energy technologies for electricity generation. Theinterest is primarily due to better energy security, smaller environmental impact and providing a sustainablealternative compared to the conventional energy sources. Solar, wind, biomass, tide, and wave are some of themost reliable sources of renewable energy. Ocean approximately holds 2×103 TW of energy and has the largestrenewable energy resource on the planet. Ocean energy has many forms namely, encompassing tides, oceancirculation, surface waves, salinity and thermal gradients etc. Ocean tide in particular, associates both potentialand kinetic energy. The study is focused on the latter concept that deals with tidal current energy conversiontechnologies. Tidal streams or marine currents generate kinetic energy that can be extracted by marine currentenergy devices and converted into transmittable energy form. The principle of technology development isvery comparable to that of wind turbines. Conversion of marine tidal resources into substantial electricalpower offers immense opportunities to countries endowed with such resources and this work is aimed ataddressing similar prospects of Bangladesh. The study analyses the extracted current velocities from numericalmodel works at several locations in the Bay of Bengal. Based on current magnitudes, directions and availabletechnologies the most fitted locations were adopted and possible annual generation capacity was estimated.The paper also examines the future prospects of tidal current energy along the Bay of Bengal and establishes aconstructive approach that could be adopted in future project developments.

Renewable Energy Potentials along the Bay of Bengal due to Tidal Water Level Variation

The projected increase in energy demand coupled with concerns regarding present reliance on fossil fuel and associated environmental concerns had led to increased interest in exploiting renewable energy sources. Among different renewable energy sources, tidal energy is unique and most suitable because of its predictable nature and capability to ensure supply security. Tide consists of both kinetic and potential energy which can be converted to electricity using well-proven technology. The potential energy of tides - the principal focus of the study, is stored due to rise and fall of the sea level. Head difference created due to tidal variation between basin side and sea side of a barrage stores potential energy which is converted into fast-moving water that rotates turbine and generates electricity. Bangladesh with its long coastline has promising prospects of tidal energy resource development. The study focuses on tidal energy resource exploration and exploitation along several competent locations of the Bengal coastline. Tidal records of flood and ebb tide of these locations are analyzed to calculate the potential energy. Finally, available potential techniques of energy extraction are evaluated for annually generated energy estimation. This study investigates the prospect and utilization of tidal energy concept and reviews the possibilities and opportunities of employment of the technology for sustainable development and climate change mitigation in context of Bangladesh.

A Study on Existing WATSAN Condition of Two Tea Gardens in

In Bangladesh, the area around Sylhet is a traditional tea growing zone. Sylhet is not only plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Bangladesh but also important for ecological balance of the country. However, the water supply and sanitation (WATSAN) condition of tea garden area especially for workers is not environmentally sound. Moreover, there is not enough number of tube wells to get water for drinking purposes and even no provision of municipal water supply. The income of tea garden workers is poor around BDT 3000-4000 per month; 80% people were illiterate, 58% people were getting improper (shared among many workers) latrine facility. The drinking water was observed free from faecal coliform and arsenic contamination but the concentration of iron was high. This study reveals that both the tea garden people are deprived from proper latrine facility, water supply system, waste management and housing facilities. Sustainability of water supply and sanitation system must be considered for achieving good health for all and keep the environment healthy for smooth economic development.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v4i2.10125 J. Understanding Hydrodynamic Flow Characteristics in a Model Mangrove Ecosystem in Singapore

Recent importance has been placed on the ecological and socio-economic aspects of mangroves for adjacent coastal populations, in terms of flood defense, food resources, employment and generation of income. Anthropogenic stressors, such as direct clearance, hydrological alterations, climatic change effects or chemical pollution contribute to mangrove ecosystems degradation. While the relative impact is not well understood, the hydrodynamics specific to mangroves (intertidal, land-marine interface) are undoubtedly influencing those effects. In the present study, a computer-based model was built to understand the hydrodynamic flow characteristic in a mangrove ecosystem, the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve in Singapore, with the wider intent to better understand the transport of chemical substances in mangroves. Field surveys in the mangrove and the preliminary development of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic (2DH) model have been carried out. Higher bottom roughness was considered in the vegetated part of the model domain to account for the effect of mangrove roots. Spatial and temporal distributions, as well as minor mean differences between simulated and observed results, suggest that the developed model capture satisfactorily the tidal dynamics within the river, the wetland area covered with mangroves and in the strait. These results indicate that the hydrodynamics are properly understood within the Sungei Buloh mangrove ecosystem and can be used for modeling the fate of chemicals.

Longshore Characteristics of Wave Run-up under Stormy Condition

An X-band nautical radar system was employed to examine wave run-up during a typhoon around the research pier HORS in Hasaki, Japan. Analyses on radar echo images were done to estimate temporal and spatial variations of water fronts by manual digitizing of cross-shore time stack images. Digitized instantaneous water fronts were validated with wave gauge measurements with an acceptable agreement. Long-shore distribution of mean shoreline positions and intertidal foreshore slopes were then estimated using time averaged images. Run-up, the height of discrete waterlevel maxima, was estimated from the digitized water fronts with the help of foreshore profile. Run-up variationswere parameterized with surf similarity parameter. Low frequency variances in run-up motion were observed, whichwere traveling in the longshore.
