Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Synbiotics: A Potential Source for a Healthy Gut

Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics have all been explored extensively in recent decades for their potential health advantages. Probiotics, prebiotics, and their combinations were seen to be clinically useful for a variety of gut-related illnesses, such as digestion, ulcers, travellers' diarrhea, IBD, and for boosting gut health and the immune system. These food supplements are generally known as functional foods, and are well known for altering, modifying, and restoring of pre-existing healthy intestinal flora. They also ensure the smooth working of the digestive environment. Bifidobacterium , S. boulardii , Lactobacilli , and E. coli are some examples of often-utilised probiotic strains, whereas prebiotics such as Inulin, fructans, and pectin are the most often utilised fibres that, when combined with probiotics are known as synbiotics and may boost probiotic viability. This chapter discusses probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics along with their function, types, mechanism, and applications on human gut health.

Alpha-Linolenic acid: A Pharmacologically Active Ingredient from Nature

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential omega 3 fatty acid which is mostly found in plants. ALA is not synthesized in the human body due to this reason, it should be included in diet from various sources such as flaxseed, walnut, canola oil etc. ALA is a precursor of other omega 3 fatty acids namely Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). These two fatty acids are derived from animal sources and are documented with many health benefits. Further, various studies have evidently supported the pharmacological activities of ALA such as neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anti-diabetic. The beneficial effects of ALA can be attributed due to its bioavailability which is almost complete like other fatty acids. This review covers the pharmacological actions of ALA and its bioavailability and metabolism with the help of available literature under one roof.

Absence of nucleotide‐binding oligomerization domain‐containing protein 2 variants in patients with leprosy and tuberculosis

Summary Crohn’s disease‐associated NOD 2 variants (Arg702Trp and 3020insC) were found to be monomorphic (wild), and 7 subjects were heterozygous for Gly908Arg SNP in 263 patients with tuberculosis, 260 patients with leprosy and 270 healthy controls residing in northern Indian states. This is the first report to suggest the minimal role of these variants in susceptibility/resistance to TB and leprosy in this population.

Phytomedicinal properties of Cynodon dactylon (L.) pers. (durva) in its traditional preparation and extracts

Pharmacotherapy with Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. (CdL) (Sanskrit name durva) has been described in Ayurvedic text. The traditional preparation of Cynodon dactylon, called swaras (juice), has rarely been evaluated for its phytochemical quality and phytomedicinal activities. In this study, we aimed to perform the characterisation of phytochemicals, quantification of chemical markers, and evaluation of in vitro and ex vivo biological activity of CdL juice (durva swaras). The cultivated CdL (durva) was authenticated by a botanist, and macro–microscopic examination was performed before bio-deposition. Fresh green juice (S) of CdL was prepared and further lyophilised (JL); additionally, water (W), hydroalcoholic (HA), and alcoholic (A) extracts were prepared. The phytochemical constituents in all extracts were qualitatively analysed using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The chemical markers in JL were identified and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. To optimise biological activity, the age of the plant was evaluated as a factor influencing the antioxidant activity of S using an in vitro DPPH assay. In addition, an ex vivo proliferation assay of mouse splenocytes was performed after treatment with the extracts, and the effects of the extracts on immunomodulation and inflammatory cytokines were assessed. The specific morphological characteristics of CdL, namely narrowly linear leaves with light-green stem, along with its macro–microscopic features were confirmed, and the plant specimen was bio-deposited. The phytoconstituents (range: 62–72 compounds) in all extracts were qualitatively confirmed. The chemical markers p-coumaric acid (0.48%) and trans-ferulic acid (0.35%) in JL were quantified. Plants aged 6 months and above showed the most potent activity. The free radical-scavenging activity of the extracts ranged from 60% to 75%; the IC50 of the extracts (range: approximately 450–650 μg/mL) was higher than that of vitamin C (2.8 μg/mL). The effective concentration for proliferation of splenocytes treated with JL and W (0.45–62.5 μg/mL) varied widely compared with that of splenocytes treated with A and HA (0.45–1.95 μg/mL). Significant reductions in the levels of pro-inflammatory (IFN-γ and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (IL-4) cytokines were observed after JL treatment compared with those after concanavalin A treatment. Our findings are of biological significance because we quantitatively confirmed the chemical markers in CdL. Moreover, the antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of JL as well as its ability to reduce inflammatory cytokines were determined.

An economic study of dairy farming in Rewa district of M.P.

The findings of present reserch study of Rewa district indicates that all size dairy farms (small, medium and large) were profit making units per milch buffalo per year maximum net income Rs. 10720 was recorded in large size group and minimum net income Rs. 5432 was recorded in small size group. While per dairy per year net income Rs. 268000 was secured in large size group (maximum) and Rs. 21728 in small size group (minimum) respectively. The overall average per return per milch buffalo per size group per year was Rs. 8518 and per year per dairy net return Rs. 127383.33 respectively. The human labour employment was increased as per increase of dairy size groups ranging from 255 days (minimum) in small size dairy to 1146 days (maximum) in large size groups. The overall per dairy size farm average human labour days employment was 601 days having its labour wage Rs. 24040. There was cent percent use of family labour in small size group and the share of hired human labour in total human labour employment was 70% in large size group. The human labour was continuously employed for whole of the year whether it was favourable or deficit monsoon year. Thus conclusion may be drawn that in Rewa district if higher milch buffalo breeds are raised with proper feeding and care then respective dairy size groups will not only provide continued assured maximum net income but will also be employed human labour of that area for whole of the year at their doorsteps as well as helpful in solving the exadous of labour force in bad monsoon years.
